We Have A Bow And We Wish To Use It

Hero's War really makes me realize that being dropped into a medieval setting (even one with magic) is functionally like coming out of a fallout shelter after an apocalypse. You have to figure out how to put back together a functioning modern society as we know with bare bones knowledge of how things work and far too little tools to do it with. In a sense, being transplanted from one world to another that's on a much lower tech level is a personal apocalypse by itself.
Sounds interesting but also vaguely familiar, like I've forgotten a book. Is there western fiction with the same idea? Probably written in 70s-90s

No but I'll check it out.

I did remember the name of one series, "The Warlock in Spite of Himself" by Christopher Stasheff. A space traveler with robot sidekick ends up on a medieval style magic world.

Well, since we're posting stuff we enjoy intermittently I've been having a hell of a time with
The Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich
.

It follows the madcap adventures of one of the world's most powerful undead while he's under house arrest in the city of the hero who defeated him, all with the end goal of getting a human body so he can finally lose his virginity... or something. He's not really good at planning these things. It's about as fun as "Running away from the Hero" with far faster/non monetized releases.
Blegh. This is mostly incoherent, maybe it's a culture gap.

If you like slice of life stuff, Middle Age Man's VRMMO Daily Life is a good alternative to OSO.
The manga gets pretty :jerkbag:, after the intro this dude just coasts effortlessly through the game solo and is admired by all

*cough cough* there's this really cool story called "Ascendance of a Bookworm" that some goon is translating and i think it's pretty good, albeit kinda slow, so check it out and maybe add it to the OP

It's refreshing to see one of these with a thorough translation and nice formatting.

none of that halfassed nonsense like keeping honorifics or weird onomatopoeia

The first few chapters are kinda like that. But it picks up reasonably well.

Eh, the translation remains a little rough. But I found the series amusing, it isn't even close to my top 10 but it's a change of pace from most reincarnation novels. Give it til chapter 5ish, if you don't like it by then you'll probably not like the rest.
(But I never bothered picking it back up again after the first few chapters.)

Cook of the Mercenary Corp
Another one that hasn't been updated in a while, or at least very sporadically. Really talented cook somehow ended up in a fantasy world. Despite blundering about, he becomes an integral part of a mercenary corp. Adventures ensue.

Genjitsushugisha no Oukokukaizouki
A guy who's a realist gets summoned to another world to be a hero. Unfortunately, he doesn't get any real power ups, and the kingdom he gets summoned to is in deep financial and political trouble. Luckily the protagonist has read a lot, and thus has a plan forward.
These sound fun, haven't heard of them before. Thanks

I think the thread should just come with a huge disclaimer that a lot of these stories use weird tropes and any story can degenerate into porn, for some value of porn.
That's not very useful, maybe tag the weird ones with emotes like :zombie:
