the saga games are good but hell if id recommend them to someone just starting out with jrpgs except the final fantasy legend games those would be fine for that

I think you should give Skies of Arcadia a try. Definitely also play Earthbound if it at all looks like your thing. You won't regret it.

robotrek illusion of gaia kartia suikoden 1/2/3 and if you really want more after do 4/5 final fantasy adventures/secret of mana/seiken densetsu 3/legend/ final fantasy 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/9/10 eternal eyes vagrant hearts valkrie profile vandal hearts vagrant story jade cocoon crystalis shin megami tensei/persona ok thats probably a year or two worth of good jrpg gaming enjoy
