My dad owns more than 100 guns (like actually, he's a collector but maintains them all in working order). Even he was weirdest out by how easy it was to buy guns on Trademe, until about 5 years ago it was almost completely unregulated.

I'm not going to outright say they were responsible for all the ones recently, but having someone saying 'yeah, a cheap pair of scissors, or sidecutters will get through it easily' and then actually showing it being done is something else. At this point I'm thinking locking these two idiots away is gonna be a public service. Next up on Story, it's time we took car manufacturers to task. Our expert shows us how with just a simple blade, any criminal could turn a normal car into an unstoppable deathtrap! We also tackle household chemical manufacturers by showing how just mixing a few common cleaners can create lethal poisonous gas. Anyone could use this as a murder weapon! I'd be highly surprised if someone merely showing how to remove ankle bracelets actually caused more removals to happen. I mean, its not like you need specialised knowledge or equipment - even the dumbest fuckwit knows that scissors cut things, and scissors are not exactly scarce. But I am of the opinion that these brackets should be built to be secure even if its common knowledge how to remove them. If they are not secure if the wearer knows how to remove them, then they are not secure full stop.

I've always been under the apparently naïve impression that they had some sort of anti-tamper circuit that would be triggered if you took them apart by force; this isn't difficult or expensive to implement so I'm sort of boggled that this hasn't come up with before.

"You can cut off your ankle bracelet" isn't exactly a revelation, its common sense. People on home detention aren't security risks anyway, that's why they're allowed home detention. They also know that if they tamper with the bracelet they're going to prison, and police check these kind of things. But again, this isn't an argument against making it harder to do. A simple circuit that runs through would prevent it, like literally the sort of thing a layman could rig up. It's a bit ridiculous that they don't have this kind of thing installed anyway, so I think the story is legit.

Seriously? I too just presumed that they would have an anti-tamper circuit in it as well, in fact I thought perhaps it would even trigger if the resistance suddenly changed too much to prevent both cutting and bypassing....

I assume they have a simple anti-tamper circuit which triggers an alert if it is cut. It will be a resourcing issue where if you cut the circuit an alert is triggered which if it is noticed a corrections officer is asked to pop in and ask what the story is the next time they are passing by. Where as the public expects them to be taken down by armed police with dogs and a helicopter before they reach the end of the street.

WAGs in general is a very sexist term. The headline thing goes way beyond sport, even women who are experts/performers at the top of their field are often referred to as like "mother of three" or "[husband's profession]'s wife" or some bs.

Detectives investigating the Dirty Politics hacker Rawshark sought the banking, telephone and travel records of author and journalist Nicky Hager without any search order or other legal power.
