Lord Krangdar posted:I think it works because the show tends to show us the town as if from Dale's perspective, and he sees everything as quaint and charming. But the film reminds us that Laura didn't experience the town that way at all, and the centre of the show was still a story about rape and murder.

ManOfTheYear posted:Is Fire walk With Me good? I really really love the very first Twin Peaks episode but after that it becomes a soap opera so didn't care about it after that. It's awesome, and might appeal to you because it specifically goes out of its way to demolish the soapy tone of the show (which I love).

Colonel Whitey posted:There's a shot in I believe the pilot episode where the camera is pointed up the stairs in the Palmer house and the way it's framed and lit is just chilling even though it's a totally static shot. Like something out of one of those dreams that's a nightmare just because of the way it feels. It's amazing. The fact that he can make this insanely unnerving puts him in a class without peer.

Colonel Whitey posted:It's like, who would even think to do that shot in the first place, much less make it have that effect? An incredible genius who just looks at the mundane and sees the existential horror in it, that's who. It's helped, of course, by Grace Zibriskie's soul-rending grief.

Alfred P. Pseudonym posted:Club Silencio makes me tear up The way this scene operates is amazing. Are you crying because Betty and Rita are crying? Are they crying because the name of the song is "Crying"? Is it because Rebekah Del Rio's performance is so amazing? Is she actually not singing, or are we led to believe it's not a live performance because of the way it's edited? The great joke of the whole thing is that movies are filmed in a nonlinear fashion so it could just as easily be that what she is singing live is edited later into a recording, which is match cut with the singer collapsing and the disembodied voice continuing on. It's not what Betty and Rita are seeing, it's what you're seeing, but of course they acknowledge it by literally finding the key to unlock the film. If I showed anybody just one scene from one Lynch film, it would probably be Silencio, even though it's somewhat atypical.

Franchescanado posted:You know he's incredibly against that, right? It's against his philosophy of how movies should be viewed, from beginning to end. It's specifically what he said about the DVD release of Mulholland Drive and it's total bullass.

I just looked it up, it's the exact same clues. The Time Dissolver posted:There's a whole lot of easier ways than those questions to get to "failed actress dreams idealized version of her life". Maybe they point out some nice attention to detail but nothing that is gonna blow the movie wide open. I love the poo poo out of Mulholland Drive but it's got a following that misses the forest for the trees very much like The Shining does. My favorite interpretation of Mulholland Drive is that it is the dream that Hollywood has about itself.

How would you compare it to FWWM's lost material? Presentation-wise, as well. The way they present FWMM deleted scenes is practically its own little weird movie.

The Time Dissolver posted:I have been watching and rewatching Premonition Following An Evil Deed lately. Everything in that film you see just long enough and just clearly enough to inspire obsession. It reminds me of the Zapruder film in that way. Its absolutely incredible. One of the best soundtracks for what it's worth, as well.

A True Jar Jar Fan posted:I think I would have enjoyed Inland Empire in a theater but at home I absolutely could never get into it. More than anything Lynch has done it really feels intended to be watched in complete isolation. If you get a chance, definitely watch it in a theater. I saw it when it came out, then again last month, and both times had exactly the same effect on me.
