After being told that my wife and I had gotten into Twin Peaks, my father in law decided to gift us a Lynch film.

He gave us Inland Empire.

I didn't hate it but I felt like I'd jumped from 0-60. It's a hosed up fever dream of a film and I really liked the way it basically operates on dream logic, amplifying little fears until they become the world. We watched Berberian Sound Studio not long after and it hit a lot of the same notes (although in a much more accessible fashion).

I need to watch more Lynch.

If I like Lynch what other films/albums would I like? A lot of mainstream stuff that's suppose to be good like Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad bores and disappoints me. I feel like Lynch is a gateway to a world of quality and artistic integrity. I'm enticed by stuff that's raw and evokes emotion.

Berberian Sound Studio. It's about a meek English sound engineer whose grip on reality starts to slip while working on an Italian horror film.

3. Inland Empire

This is a movie that I usually describe to people as "The Lord of the Rings of crazy people movies." It was made right when Digital filmmaking was coming around (which I think hurts the film visually, as the tech wasn't quite there just yet), and David decided to go whole hog. I don't think he had a lot of restraint for this, and quite frankly, it shows.

Early in Inland Empire there's a very disconcerting shot where coffee is being poured and the handheld camera abruptly lurches in to get a better view. I had an image of Lynch holding a digicam and pushing in like a gonzo porn cameraman trying to catch the money shot and couldn't stop laughing.

The same notion seems to be at the heart of Inland Empire, which repeatedly blurs the line between Nikki and the character she plays in the film within a film, making us (and her) unsure about whether we're seeing an act of infidelity or merely a staged scene. This spirals into Nikki eventually losing her identity altogether.

I also just want to take a moment to reflect on how great Lynch is as an interview subject.

If this is the same Two Worlds I remember an obsession with David Lynch comes as no surprise at all.

After mentioning to my father in law that Mrs Boat and I were really enjoying Twin Peaks, he got us Inland Empire on bluray as a birthday gift. He's a bit of a film buff so it kind of came off as "oh yeah, you think you like Lynch? Have a go on this"

I did enjoy it but don't have any huge desire to rewatch it. The hell of subjectivity seems like a pretty good way to sum up the dream logic that dictates how the film progresses.
