I love both personally especially seeing the abridged version first then watching the actual show and realizing, "God this show is already an abridged show!"

For voices in that show I either have to go with Alexander Anderson or the Major or Alucard for the best

Best Dub that didn't get to finish it's series: GaoGaiGar
Say what you will but Media Blasters got exactly how to dub that show with Michael Sinterniklaas as Gai and DAN GREEN is Taiga (Veronica Taylor as Mamrou was a good call, they really couldn't make his Scoobies much better, Hana (Eileen Stevens, Iris (PKMN BW)) still sounds like the rhythmic beating of mice for example). Them dumping the show halfway through the Tokyo Invasion arc in favour of Voltron still hurts to think about (and has sorta put a big ol black mark on Voltron for me).

Bad Dub: Wakfu.
Oh this was a mess, I'm still happy I'm getting the boxsets for as low as I'm getting them but that Dub, given that I liked the voice work in other British English localisations (Xenoblade and DQ 8) was just crap. Is it too much to ask they try a little harder for the enviable dub they're going to give Dofus?

Dub I appreciate given it's TV-Y Nature: Digimon Adventure & Digimon Tamers
02's dub, much like 02 itself, has like two good scenes (TK Getting a whip to the face only to beat the living daylights out of Ken and the HP Lovecraft episode) and the rest is incoherent nonsense. I still love the acting in Adventure's dub. That bit with Tai pouring his heart out about his responsibility for Kari still kills me.

The main cast was good but a lot of the minor roles were hilariously amateurish. It's been the better part of a decade since I watched the show and I still remember some woman like four or five episodes in saying "I am aware of that!" as the worst line reading I've ever heard in an anime.

so why do you people enjoy dubs besides the obvious comedy ones like that ghost hunter one and ones that drastically change the show like whatever you watched as a kid in the 90's (pizza cats was cool as a child)? maybe its because im from a country where everything besides entertainment for children under 6 is subbed but i don't get why you just don't read the subtitles? its not like it requires more attention, for me it requires even less since if i miss them saying something i can just look at the subtitles to catch it. what's the appeal?

note that i don't hate dubs or anything before someone accuses me of that, i play plenty of videogames with the english dub without caring particularly much, its just that i prefer watching something in its original language whenever possible.

Filthy cultureless americans

Though I do notice anime seems a whole lot more, like, juvenile when it's dubbed. Like with subs there's some foreign mystique going on where it seems more artistic or mature than it is. I couldn't finish the first episode of dubbed KlK despite watching the subbed version mostly fine. That might just be KlK though. Point is the emotional impact is a lot more when you actually know what the gently caress they're saying and intoning

It's on Netflix now. It's bearable untill you get to Ruel and then the entire production goes Eureka Seven AO on us.

As a consolation the french version is there as well so you can get an understanding on how much a disappointment the dub is and go back to drowning in the honey bath that is French voice acting.

The worst thing about dubbed anime is when they refuse to translate Japanese text that a character is looking at. It drives me crazy. Like they'll read a letter or something that is shown to the viewer and it will just be untranslated Japanese.

King Gainer's dub has the advantage of being more legible than the subs so that's also a good thing!

Rangpur
Dec 31, 2008

What was the problem with King Gainer's subs? I own the entire show on DVD and I never had trouble following them. Show has a nice, solid dub--nothing outstanding, but no glaring shortcomings either. Also manages the nice trick of casting the spunky kid tagalong so she wasn't horribly grating. That's rare.

Not all the old dubs were bad, though, or even 'good for the time.' The original El Hazard OAV is an example where it's arguably better than the original. (In fairness, this is due largely to Jinnai's English voice actor selling the hell out of his role.) Also preferable because of the badly mistimed subtitles on the DVD release. Still annoyed about that.

You missed Steve Blum as Leeron.

And it's a pretty good dub. It has the occasional issues where more localisation would've helped, but everyone commits, which is the only thing you can do in that show. (Also, Nia is only Starfire early on, it's someone else later.)

This. This is where good dubbing performs, it makes what's already a funny scene and makes it funnier when your mind isn't filtering it.

What will always turn me off of a dub is when most of a cast sound like they're anime fans in their late twenties doing voices for high school characters, which accounts for a lot of anime. That's why I think serieses like Black Lagoon, Hellsing, and Ghost in the Shell work much better in English, in some cases better than the original Japanese.

Speaking of Black Lagoon, the English dub has a unique workaround for a couple episodes, when the mercenaries take a trip to Japan. In the Japanese dub, there are bits where a translator is talking in Japanese to a Japanese person, then turns around and starts talking English (actually Japanese) to the foreigner. And just to sell the premise, sometimes the foreigner (who is Japanese VA) will have to take a minute to speak a straight sentence of English.

In the Dub, meanwhile, where whenever there's conversations with both languages in the same room they just keep the subtitled Japanese and do all other conversations in English.

Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust also has a unique dub as well, since it was made for the American market and dubbed in English first.

Yeah, the English dub fits really well because half the cast should be speaking English anyway.

Nationality-wise you've got (left to right) Russian, American, Chinese-American, Taiwanese, and killer robot from the future Venezuelan. For the rest of the Lagoon crew, Dutch is African-American and Benny is Jewish-American. Rock's basically the only actual (important) Japanese person/Japanese speaker in the series.
