I think that distinction is pretty harmful, really, because "supporting the troops" has become something non-negotiable in the US. So you can be against foreign policy, but when someone asks if you support the troops, you have to say yes, essentially shutting down the conversation. I hate the Canadian army, and nobody would call me an rear end in a top hat for saying that (unless their relatives are in the army), because we don't have the same creepy mentality about the military here.
