Thesaurus substitution is an actual things dumbs do to try to not look dumb. It's really obvious and grating because every few words will almost be used correctly but not quite. Maybe kuato is a dumb.

Like no I'm not trying hard or cracking out a thesaurus, that's just the word that came to mind that best conveyed my thoughts. I'm not trying to impress you or appear smart or something, it didn't even cross my mind that some people might find that word complicated.

The ideal reading level

So what reading level should you aim for? Even if the majority of your audience has graduated from high school, you don’t necessarily want to target 12th grade. The reading level of your audience is constantly fluctuating and two people of the same age and same educational background may still read at different levels.

Aim for a level of around 6th or 7th grade for maximum impact. Not only does this allow you to reach audience members who may not be the strongest at reading comprehension, it’s simple enough to get your message across quickly. Even audience members who read at higher levels will respond better to copy written at a 6th or 7th grade level.

People do that sometimes of course, but probably not as often as people accuse each other of doing it.

A lot of gaming and casino jobs are people with no degrees who "work their way up the ladder", a local guy was arrested for rape and was some lead janitor somewhere and became a Casino Manager. They'd probably write "quit using a thesaurus" for most of the posts in this thread.

I've also seen writing guidelines that basically encourage you to use logical fallacies to convince people of things. Like directions on how to shape your language to be emotionally manipulative and subconsciously kindle negative assumptions in the reader about the people who oppose your views. I'm guessing this is basically what you get 4 years of education of when you major in political science.

Well the writing style guidelines do highlight inherent issues with the dissemination of ideas and information, often times being thorough and fleshing out your arguments as clearly as possible does more harm than good when it comes to introducing concepts to as many people as possible. It's why we have so many things that are pretty academically conclusive (like NHS being cheaper than private healthcare) that are consistently rebuffed by much simpler (but ultimately incorrect) "common sense" talking points and soundbites.

In what situation is 'thusly' a better choice than 'thus?'

true, most people would rather hear about the Canadians/Europeans coming to the US for better healthcare rather than sifting through a decade or more of cost-benefit analysis, or hell even looking at and interpreting a chart

I just searched a couple of my old pdfs and as it turns I never actually did use the word "thusly" in anything peer reviewed but I use "thus" a whole bunch, my bad.

Also, gently caress "per se." No one uses it correctly and it sounds like someone with a speech impediment trying to slosh enough saliva out of their tongue's way so they can blurt out "pussy."

I don't have a problem with it, pursay. I believe it's "chiefly British" (though I have never examined a specific datum point thusly) so I always read it with a British accent. If said by a non-Brit, though... that seems just ergotistical.

There's people who are pretentious about not being pretentious everywhere. Like people who think its cool to throw cigarette butts everywhere. They think it's cool to do something that's lovely because they think it makes them look tough and/or opposed to things that are sensible because sensible things are totally pretentious.
