Vegetable gardens aren't terribly uncommon in the city nowadays, though, so now you've got me wondering if anyone's done a citywide test of local produce to see how that all is. I know Wayne State itself maintains a small veggie garden, so they've probably got some sort of program going on to figure this stuff out.
Unless you plan on owning an arsenal, I'd highly suggest you don't buy any kind of house in Detroit. You couldn't even give me a house in Detroit for free with no monthly payments.
As a naive young white dude, I found Detroit pleasant enough for the three years I was there. The cityscape's more just depressing than actively dangerous most of the time.
