From what I understand, years of car manufacturing has not been kind to Detroit's soil and you will not be able to grow anything edible for a while. More trouble than it's worth to garden in Detroit.
Vegetable gardens aren't terribly uncommon in the city nowadays, though, so now you've got me wondering if anyone's done a citywide test of local produce to see how that all is. I know Wayne State itself maintains a small veggie garden, so they've probably got some sort of program going on to figure this stuff out.

As a naive young white dude, I found Detroit pleasant enough for the three years I was there. The cityscape's more just depressing than actively dangerous most of the time.
