Being comfortable living and saving on <50k a year is noteworthy in itself. As income increases, 'quality of life' tends to as well unless people are pretty thrifty in general. I am sure many of the people with 6 figure incomes would have a tough time adjusting if their income dropped to that level even though families of 4 can make it work. It's all relative. I just try and focus on proportional income percentage levels. Granted costs like utilities/rent/food have effective minimums, but I just try to treat it like golf and make it a personal game. Based on the spreadsheet I am near the bottom position myself, and I am actually still really proud because I am paying attention and making positive gains compared to even a year ago. I feel lucky to have what I have and feel like my lifestyle is still pretty extravagant. Once I get some of these systems in better order I'll be set for life if I just keep steady. It's a big deal knowing that I can be debt free in about year, and from then on easily save 20%+ toward retirement from age 30 on. I'm married, already own a home with 19% equity too and we have no student loans so I am on cloud nine. Just gotta keep that birth control funded lol. To be honest, not using a credit card in a year and only going out once a week is a huge adjustment. Without that bad habit from early adulthood we would be so solid right now, and it's been corrected! We bought no Christmas or birthday gifts last year and stuck to it. The struggle is real and I feel good. root of all eval fucked around with this message at 04:45 on Jan 23, 2015 |

It's all relative. http://www.advisorperspectives.com/dshort/commentaries/Happiness-Benchmark.php After a certain income level (probably related to "no consumer debt, have a home, have an emergency fund, saving for retirement, and can still afford to go out with friends and eat at restaurants"), salary increases stop correlating so strongly with happiness anyways. Also, to build on what BossRighteous is saying, even if their "quality of life" goes up, happiness actually doesn't to the same extent -- that's how you get people who are making $300k a year but still aren't happy. As long as you feel comfortable and happy, then you're doing great. Also, it's a self-selected survey even in BFC -- I'm sure the income spread of people who haven't put their information in doesn't match the spread of those who do. Someone wrote CREAM in their comments section, but ever since that new Joey Bada$$ album I only hear it as "Cash Ruins Everything Around Me". You know, I think this survey also validates the advise generously offered by goons who are pretty smart with their money (not that it needed validation). If you ask for help, and people are good enough to offer advice, maybe you should keep in mind the survey as evidence of BFC goons knowing what they're talking about, before you dismiss them (looking at you, SloMo).

I'm going to be offline for a few days... when I get back I'll work on the pivot table and missing net worth columns. Also by then we ought to have enough responses to make some kick rear end graphs and such. If you want to edit your earlier response just submit a new entry and annotate in the additional comments which row and timestamp you are replacing. The worst part of BFC is coming here and seeing everyone touting index funds, then reading in The Four Pillars that you should generally be wary when everyone is following an investing trend. I mean, I know it's still sound advice, but I feel like I need to start associating with people that aren't as financially savvy to gain some perspective.
