By the time of the 30 Years War looting techniques had advanced to the point that any reputable mercenary company had an officer called a Brandmeister (Lit: Fire Master) whose only job was to go to towns and threaten to burn them down unless they paid up. This was called "Brandschatzung", or "Fire Tax".
