I don't know what that is, but I feel vaguely uneasy looking at it, like I've been caught looking at some sort of alien porn.

I tried to do some kitty expressions real quick. Kitties! :3:

Neat! I thought you'd lay down big areas first, then go for the detail. It's cool to see how you just pop every area down as it's gonna be. This has a very "trainspotting" vibe to it.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this isn't great but dayumn dude your linework on the dorf sketch is loving beautiful, why you gotta be all covering it up? I mean, I get wanting to go for realistic, but considering the warcraft designs are cartoony to begin with, it's a shame not to flaunt those lines.
(I may be a bit biased towards linework since I never did realism well)

I'm so happy you started with this one! I really like the smoke effects. Textures are so difficult when working with digital pieces. Well, difficult for me at least. It's so different from traditional art where you you can change the nature of the materials you're working with to change the textures of the piece. With big pieces like that it's hard to cover-up the repetition that different texture brushes bring. Is this a thing others struggle with, or should I get a better art program?

I use artweaver, came free with my tablet. Now that I actually bothered to look, I do have more options with the brushes since the last update.
Trying to be too accurate has always been a bit of a pitfall for me. I was actually more frustrated with the inaccuracy and lack of feeling of control with using a tablet, when I was so used to controlling a small brush.
You're right though, focusing too hard on detail will leave the picture flat.

I love how the dude is huuuge so his sword looks like a small stabby thing.

I've been inspired now by the world of warcraft stuff (it's been ages since I drew orcs, even!) and the CYOA going on here so I wanted to do a goblin.

I wanted to do a really primal sort of orc showing fear-agression. Made the lines rougher than usual, tossed the colour on and WALLA!

Could've still gone coarser, I think.

Your style reminds me a lot of Guy Davis' work; I think it's the bold black lines and tight facial features. If you work more bold shadows into your figures I think it would really improve them.

To my shame, I had to google Guy Davis, then felt suitably flattered to be compared to that.
And you know what? You're right. I've been too light with my shadows, especially for dramatic pictures, when trying to leave room for colour.
Yeaaahhhhh more black, embrace the dark side, Luke.

Man, I still gotta work on this though.

It shows very well in the goblin pic that I became "blind" to the work while doing it. Those outlines looked mega dark, I could see so many different shades in the green and the flesh colour while I was painting it, that lipstick was an eye-searing neon colour, those pants nearly black. In the end though, it's so obviously flat. The shades that I was worried would be too dark turned out hardly midtone. That's what you get for staring at a screen for hours on end in a dark room.

edit:

Finished the first draft for the red/stone dragon. Tried using a more painterly approach to adding color. I used a bunch of brushes with a lot less control to build up the rocky outcrops and fire. I also ended up desaturating the entire image because the background ended up being too purple and I want the flame to really pop for the final image.

edit 2:

Final first draft done!

drat you work fast. Do you spend a lot of time on the finishing touch-ups?

I'm gonna be stuck on orcs forever now. Just a fast one, I usually love using hours to perfect details so it's nice to let go of that every now and then.

I once did several pictures with nothing but dark green nail polish, 'cause that was all I could get my hands on at the time. Are you stuck somewhere with only a book on different animals to keep you company? I ask because that seems like the only way one would end up drawing something like weevils and double-banded coursers. And I love the pissed-off monkey in the background.

A small wip of what I've been working on for the last couple of days. I'll probably add a few more deer in the background. Anyone got any suggestions or crits?

I love the colour scheme and the flowerbutt on the deer, but the left antlers are blending with the silver birch on the background. I'd maybe add juuuuust a little bit more warm tone to the tree, or add a darker shade to the "bottom line" of the antlers, or rethink the antler colour/texture.
I'm gonna disagree with Propitious on adding trees, I think there's plenty there for a sparse nordic scenery, especially if you're gonna bring in more deer as points of interest.

You've got no idea how difficult it is to do any outstretched hands. Every time the I gotta stop myself or everyone would be flipping everyone else.

So hey, I managed to get the process in bits!
I wanted to do another wizard on a galaxy background eyesearing piece with extra sparkles.
I had a lovely photo that I took that I was using as a reference. I kept the photo open side-by-side with the pic the whole time so I wouldn't deviate too much.
As you can see, I mainly got the general shapes down and I was planning on doing a kitty in the magic effect.
I planned on bringing out the skull shape with skull facepaint for a wicked necromancer!

I do the ink in its own layer, and I keep checking the reference pic for the bits that I was too vague with when sketching. You can see here I was planning on an evil black beard.

Laid down the base colours and a rough outline of what I want the nebula in the background to look like. I thought the wizard looked too young, so I added some wrinkles and go with white for the beard. I decide against necromancers, noticing that I kept the features too soft to pull it off. I should've gone for way more angles in the features if I had been really dedicated to that idea.

Shades and highlights. I spent way too much time on the background, adding transparent bright colours, going over them with transparent black, then new layer of colours, then more black, moving down in brush size step by step. I had googled some nebula pics for colour reference. I desperately try to make the rough 2-tone linework sit nicely with the lovely smooth, round background with all its colour shifts.

Then I don't feel like kitties, I feel like puppies instead, so puppies it is. Also, sparkles EVERYWHERE!
As an afterthought I slap on a half-assed border, picking a dark blue from the picture and paintbucketing it on half opacity.

You're a wizard now.

For FX stuff like the pup coming out of the wizard's spell, it's generally good practice to stay away from heavy dark colours and sharp lines. If you revisit the piece I'd do the puppy outline in a fairly wide soft airbrush of the colour of your choice (brighter than the background) and then go over the outline again with a small soft airbrush of white or the brightest value of the colour you used as a base.

Man, I know. :sigh: That's exactly what I usually do with magic effects. I actually started doing that and then scrapped the layer. I felt it left the area too mushy, and I wanted to add something line-drawn there to tie the wizard in better. Then it didn't look any good because a freaking nebula with both very dark and light spots in varying intensity does not make a good background for intricate linework, so I added dark outlines to bring it out. Then I went "pffpfpfpfpf maybe next time I'll think this through better".

I envy your ability to use bright colours so effectively on pictures that are otherwise basically greyscale, and I super love the cyberpunk rave feel.
