Updated 02/13/2015 The current state of Windows 8.1 tablets - Windows RT is dead. Everything listed below is going to have full Windows 8.1 - Upgrading to Windows 10 is going to be free. Every tablet will be able to upgrade. - Windows 8.1 w/ Bing is Windows 8.1 "This edition of Windows sets Bing as the default search engine within Internet Explorer. Users will be able to manually change default search settings and install additional browsers of their choice. Windows 8.1 with Bing is based on the feature set available in Windows 8.1 Core and includes all of the latest updates, including Windows 8.1 Update. Windows 8.1 with Bing is available for 32-bit and 64-bit platforms. " - The market seems to be moving away from 8 inch and under devices. HP is having success with their Stream line and Lenovo/Toshiba still have 8 inch models available but it seems like the demand is for 10+ inch devices. - Tablets no longer come with a free copy of Office Home & Student 2013. OEMs have mostly moved over to a free year of Office 365 but some tablets come with nothing at all. I’ll try to list what tablets have what below. - Processors. They basically rank like this. Intel Atom Bay Trail -> Intel Core M -> Intel i5 -> Intel i7. Bay Trail is enough for everyday use and casual gaming but don’t expect the world out of it. - The app store is still pretty bad. Microsoft’s moving towards universal apps so, in theory, it should get better but I wouldn’t count on it. There’s always debate in the thread about whether that matters since you can use a combo of the few decent apps that are available, metro IE11 (best touch browser out at the moment) and legacy desktop programs but it’s worth mentioning. - With a flood of no-name Chinese Windows 8 tablets, it seems like OEMs are fleeing from the race to the bottom price model that they were aiming for with the last wave of devices. Which is good because most of the tablets listed below have a minimum of 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of hard drive space. People in the thread have reported that Windows works with 1 GB of RAM but you’d probably be better off with a 2 GB device. I’d avoid anything with 16 GB of hard drive space. 32 GB is already tight enough. - I’m not going to list any Chinese tablets or older tablets below. That’s not to say that they aren’t any good but there’s enough name products for me to cover without getting into every Windows 8 tablet on Alibaba or the variations of certain models over the years. Didn't get this in time for the recommendations at the end of the last thread but I also recommend the TW801 if you have a MicroCenter near you. The only issues I've had are with the wifi staying connected which I'm pretty sure is just an issue with my router and signal saturation. Compare with the HP Stream 8 (this has the same processor, more ram, and is $50 less).

Up to a week idle, haven't used it for a full day off the charger but it'll play at least 2 hours of youtube and still have a couple days of idle. e: The touch isn't the best, but even a cheap stylus works wonders with the handwriting input, assuming you don't drag your palm across the edge or anything. I've tried out steam in-home streaming on it and it works well. I'm still waiting to get a wireless keyboard and mouse so I can just plug it in and set it behind the TV. No f.lux, but I do all of the Windows updates, up to yesterday. It's 50/50 whether or not the pen will work when the touch dies, but the mouse and keyboard always work and the computer never freezes.

The 3000 series (the newer version with 1 GB of RAM) is still readily available but the 5000 series (the older version with 2 GB of RAM) seems like it has been discontinued. Dell has a 'call for pricing' on their website and Amazon only has used units. I figured it wasn't worth the confusion. Same thing with the Toshiba Encore 2. Now that the Write version is out, it's pointless to list the old one.

For the low-end tablets, I think they're building these things to the absolute minimum spec Microsoft will let them get away with (with maybe an extra or two to differentiate themselves - stylus, hdmi-out, etc.), which does not appear to include GPS. I'm pretty sure Google's min spec for android devices requires GPS, which is why you'll usually see it in their tablets.

My SP3 started developing yellow vertical bars along the edges of the screen. Took it to the Microsoft store and to my surprise the tech replaced it with a new one instantly. Didn't expect Apple level support to be honest. I was sure it would be some strung out ship process where I would be without a machine for a week. Just a warranty thing. I don't have complete. Was impressed.

MS Stores have wonderful customer service. The stores are one area where MS took exactly the right lessons from Apple. A downside is that their inventory tends to have a lot of duds in it -- always insist on trying everything in-store; if anything has problems they will gladly keep bringing you new units until one works.

Did you originally buy it from that store? I don't have a full MS store, but a MS store kiosk in the mall. I also have the beginnings of the yellow bars at the edge of the screen. I originally bought it at Best Buy, but if I can take it to the mall and have them exchange on the spot, I'm more likely to do something about it sooner than wait a bit more.

I bought it in July from Best Buy. It was an open box that was like $200 off retail. They didn't care, even after I showed the receipt. He initially asked when I bought it and I said I'm not sure but all SP3s are in warranty. Then I found the receipt in the box. Agree about faulty units. The first one he brought out had a frowny face on the first boot. It was defective out of the box.

My preordered SP3 charger ended up fraying on the device side and I brought it into the Mall of America MS store. They were a little hesitant to swap it out but when I said "80$ for a new one really?" they swapped out out. They did make some minor changes in the newer chargers design so people buying later release date ones probably wont run into this as frequently.

I got a yellow bar on my SP3, but it was very intermittent to the point where I almost thought I imagined it. But the pen button has never worked to bring up OneNote on mine, and the touchscreen goes dead 2-3 times an hour for 30 seconds, so I brought mine into the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall store. They replaced it straight up no questions asked when I mentioned the yellow lines. Before that we went through a 30 minute "appointment" while the tech tried to fix the pen (new pen didn't fix anything) and the touchscreen (all updates were done, he tried a manual firmware update). But I get to "issue 3," the yellow line, and he just walked into the back and got me a new one.

When I got home with it and ran the initial installation, it failed and had to start over which gave me a mini heart attack. Any good way to clean the SP3 keyboards? I went with cyan and the bottom is getting really bad. The black desk at work is rubbing off on it and I once got blood on it unknowingly. Scotsdale Fashion Square MS Store is awesome. Supposedly it's due to a discoloration of the adhesive underneath the glass, due to prolonged heating or something.

I really don't think it can be overheating. I honestly barely use mine and it developed the yellow line. It's a straight up manufacturing defect as far as I'm concerned. Since it seems to be endemic, I would probably go with some sort of issue with the assembly process of the panel or some odd stress that they undergo when the whole thing is being put together. It also seems like very single surface model has suffered from it in one way or another so I'm really not too confident if I replace it it won't eventually develop it again.

I asked before in other threads but didn't really get a bunch of input. Unbranded 10.1" Tablet for $179.99 - Tablet: 10.4 x 6.8 x 0.4 inch 1.4 pounds - 10.1" Diagonal, Multitouch (1280 x 800) - Atom Z3735F @ 1.33 GHz - 2 GB of RAM - 6300 mAh - Speakers: ???? - 2-megapixel front camera and 2-megapixel back camera - Bluetooth 4.0, microHDMI out, 1 micro USB 2.0, microSD slot 1280 x 800 is low PPI for a screen that big, but the screen itself didn't look terrible in store. It's a little bulky, but I'd honestly rather have the bulk and a bigger screen + battery. I've got a family member who has an Asus T100. Her wifi stopped working once she left the country and got to India. Does anyone with a T100 know if there are any options in the adapter settings to change the country region or enabling channels 12-14?

Can s someone recommend a good epub reader for a windows tablet? I'd use Kindle or Nook but everyone says you can't sideload your own books. I just want all of my books in one place. Bonus points if it has a Windows Phone version with which it syncs.

Bookvisor lets you sideload your own books, and I think there's a windows phone version. Kobo is another eBook service, but I don't know if you can add your own books right now.

I've been using Freda as my ebook reader. Calibre on the desktop is pretty useful for converting formats and managing files on another device. Sumatra PDF can open .epub files and has pretty good touch support for a desktop application (three-finger tap to toggle fullscreen).

I'm actually contemplating selling not long after I get it replaced for the issue. Don't get me wrong, I think it's fantastic hardware. It really is very nice and it's incredibly portable for a full computer. That said, the compromises made to make it a true "tablet" still make it awkward to use on the lap and there's very little functionality provided from it actually being a tablet. I've found that a $330 Toshiba chromebook 2 makes a better couch surfing machine when I need a more powerful browser (as opposed to my N9) than using the SP3 in tablet mode. I also have a lenovo y410p that I barely use because of it's size and weight and I'm finding that I don't need something with a mobile GPU in it like I was planning. So, that may go as well. I'm hoping that Dell updates the new XPS 13 with Skylake in the 2nd half of this year. I think trading both the SP3 and the Lenovo for the XPS 13 will overall be better for my needs of having a super portable full PC.

Nice, thanks for the new thread, the old one helped me a ton. I own the latest Dell Venue 11 Pro 7140 now with the keyboard extending the battery. So if anyone has questions, I drop in occassionally. Core M performance is fine, normal desktop usage is great, gaming ok... Diablo 3 startup time is noticably longer compared to an i5 laptop, but gameplay on low details and 720p is very smooth. 1080p is extremely laggy, shared ram is just too slow for that.
