http://www.polygon.com/2015/2/6/7991377/dc-comics-is-bringing-an-end-to-the-new-52 posted:

Starting June 3, the publishing line will feature 24 new comics and 25 ongoing comics. Despite the New 52 coming to an end, DC Comics confirms this is not another reboot, and it is not returning to a pre-New 52 universe.

"This heralds in a new era for the DC Universe which will allow us to publish something for everyone, be more expansive and modern in our approach and tell stories that better reflect the society around us," said DC Entertainment Co-Publisher Dan DiDio in a press release. "Whether you've been a DC fan your whole life, or whether you are new to comics - there will be a book for you beginning in June."

The relaunch will begin following the Convergence event this spring, which will see different universes from DC brought together by Brainiac.

In the wake of the Convergence event, DC will also be offering a Free Comic Book Day called DC Comics: Divergence. This is going to be made free at participating stores starting May 2 and feature three eight-page previews for the upcoming June releases of Batman by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, Justice League by Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok and Superman by Gene Luen Yang and John Romita, Jr.

The New 52 is a revamp and relaunch of the entire DC Comics line. In September 2011, DC Comics cancelled its then-existing titles and debuted 52 new series.

Let's see those swell new books!!

[e: During the second month of Convergence, eight page preview stories for the upcoming comics have been included as back-matter for the tie-ins. They're also available for free here: https://www.comixology.com/FREE-DC-Sneak-Peeks/list/6762]

New series'

'Batman Beyond' by writer Dan Jurgens & artist Bernard Chang

At last, Batman Beyond gets his own ongoing series in THE definitive future of the DCU! But this isn’t the Beyond you think you know! With the Justice League missing and without Bruce to guide him, this new Batman will need to explore this bizarre world on his own while fighting to raise humanity from an opponent that’s already won.
The heroes Batman knew have failed, the world he knew has been turned on its head, and every step he takes will lead him either toward finding home – or further down the road of disaster!

'Bat-Mite' by writer Dan Jurgens & artist Corin Howell (6 issue mini-series)

Bat-Mite is here to fix the DC Universe – one hero at a time! Convinced that he’s the imp that put Batman on the map, he’s spreading his expertise all over the DC Universe, eager to boost the careers of heroes he thinks need his “help.”

'Bizzaro' by writer Heath Corson & artist Gustavo Duarte (6 issue mini-series)

“Hate HARLEY QUINN? Then you will super hate BIZARRO! Bizarro star of worstest comic ever! Go ahead and miss it! If there’s one thing this issue not have it these two things: Jimmy Olsen and Chupacabras!”

'Black Canary' by writer Brenden Fletcher & artists Annie Wu and Irene Koh

Dinah Lance hits the road! After years as a soldier and vigilante, the LAST place Dinah saw herself is on stage…but she’s quickly learning she’d die to protect the gang of misfits she’s fallen into. 'Constantine: The Hellblazer' by writers Ming Doyle and James Tynion IV & artist Riley Rossmo

'Dark Universe' by writer James Tynion IV & artist Ming Doyle
'Dr. Fate' by writer Paul Levitz & artist Sonny Liew

'Doomed' by writer Scott Lobdell & artist Javier Fernandez

In this startling new series, a Metropolis U student gains the power to transform into the monstrously powerful Doomsday! The power may be the key to fixing his life, but every time he transforms he risks getting stuck forever as Superman’s most heinous adversary! How far can he go before he’s doomed?

'Earth 2: Society by writer Daniel Wilson & artist Jorge Jimenez (ex-Earth 2)

The survivors of Earth-2’s war with Apokolips find themselves on a new world, but can Green Lantern, Power Girl, a new Batman and the other heroes of Earth-2 create a new world that’s better than the last, or will their interference and good intentions doom this world, just like the old one?

'Green Lantern: Lost Army' by writer Cullen Bunn & artists Jesus Saiz & Javi Pina

Imagine waking up in a strange place where you didn’t recognize anything, and everyone you knew and loved was nowhere to be found. Now imagine that you are a Green Lantern. The rest of the Corps is missing, you don’t know where you are and there’s not a Power Battery to be found for as far as your ring can scan. Where are you? How did you get here? Those are just two of the many questions facing our heroes.
Starring John Stewart, Two-Six, Kilowog and Arisia, and featuring a surprise guest-star we promise you’ll never predict, LOST ARMY is an incredible journey of discovery, survival, morality and heartbreak. Never has the Corps been challenged in this way – and not everyone is going to make it home!

'Harley Quinn/Power Girl' by writers Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner & artist Stephane Roux (4 issue mini-series)

Hey, remember the panel gutter between panels 3 and 4 of page 20 of HARLEY QUINN #12? What? You DON’T? It’s only, like, the most memorable panel gutter of the twenty-first century. Well, either way, have we got the miniseries for you, in which the full tale of that momentous and momentary pause can be told!
It’s a cosmic adventure beyond your wildest imaginings: Power Girl and Harley Quinn, stranded in a forgotten dimension, on the homeworld of the amorous warlord Vartox! They’ll sacrifice anything they have to in order to get home…except their dignity! Kidding! That’ll be the first thing to go.

Travel even deeper into the future than before with the all-new JUSTICE LEAGUE 3001! They’ve managed to become the World’s Greatest Heroes of the 30th century, but with legions of foes gunning for them, can they stay alive long enough to see the year 3002?

'Martian Manhunter' by writer Rob Williams & artist Ben Oliver

Shape-shifting Martians are invading Earth – so where is J’onn J’onzz to stop them? Trust no one as the Martian Manhunter tries to stop these ruthless alien terrorists from destroying everything!

Spinning out of GRAYSON comes a solo series starring the man who can predict your every move… but no one will be able to predict what he’ll do next! A theft at the God Garden has unleashed a wave of dangerous biotech weapons on the world, and Midnighter intends to put that genie back in the bottle by any means necessary. But something else was stolen from the Garden as well…the secret history of Lucas Trent, the man Midnighter once was!

'Mystic U' (tentative title) by writer Alisa Kwitney & artist Mauricet
e: Delayed out of July.

'Omega Men' by writer Tom King & artist Barnaby Bagenda

'Prez' by writer Mark Russell & artist Ben Caldwell (12 issue limited series)

Meet Beth Ross, the first teenaged President of the United States. In a nation where corporations can run for office, the poor are used as human billboards, and tacos are delivered by drone, our only hope is this nineteen-year-old Twitter sensation. But the real question isn’t whether she’s ready for politics – it’s whether politics is ready for her.

'Red Hood/Arsenal' by writer Scott Lobdell & artist Denis Medri (ex-Red Hood and The Outlaws)

These brothers in arms face off against incredible odds while burning their way through the underbelly of the DC Universe – and it’s only a matter of time until they get gunned down in return!

Still I don't actually see any evidence that anything is being smooshed together or that any of the dumb editorial moves are being reversed. Superman and WW are still together. Everyone's costume is still bad. Cassandra is still mia. Is this really anything but a few new books for them to cancel in a year and the end of the new 52 branding?

I took out 'smooshes.' I guess the "different universes from DC brought together" was just talking about the plot of the event, not the outcome. I'm still expecting some degree of it, though. At least in a way of relaxing the history so Bizarro isn't going to have to explain any relation to B-0 from Forever Evil.

There aren't any solicits for these things. Maybe there'll be a Cassandra in the Robins gang!

The 'Society' could refer to every E2er living on main Earth after moving there (as well as the JSA allusion for the heroes, obviously, ) but that would be Futures End over again.

e: Looking at the Convergence main series solicits closely for the first time, it sounds like they're really the main characters.

Just from the launch off the top of my head, Travel Foreman on Animal Man, Freddie Williams on Captain Atom, Mateus Santolouco on Dial H, Andrea Sorrentino on I Vampire, Kieth Giffen on OMAC, Yanick Paquette on Swamp Thing.

Details on some of the June comics

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/02/14/a-few-june-mini-relaunch-details-from-dcs-retailer-roadshow-in-orlando/

quote:

Told to retailers at the Orlando DC Retailer Roadshow yesterday…

The new Robin: Son Of Batman title from Patrick Gleason is described as a Johnny Quest-style book, though with very different adventures. Part Johnny Quest and part How To Train Your Dragon, one retailer described it as like Stanley And His Monster.

We Are Robin shows how Batman has so many Robins. It’s how Batman has affected the youth of Gotham, the very existence of Robin is now being crowd sourced. Rather Brat Pack…

Section 8, the insane superhero team from Hitman who are getting their own title, will hit up Superman, Batman and all the iconic DC characters to be their eighth member. Who will say yes? Hint, probably not Kyle Rayner.

Prez is socially conscious and should play well in an election year. It was said to have a Steve Gerber Howard the Duck feel.

Gene Luan Yuen, the writer of American Born Chineseis said to bring his unique immigrant history experience to Superman as a Kryptonian born American.

Bryan Hitch‘s long-in-the-works full first issue of Justice League Of America was shown. It doesn’t invalidate continuity but isn’t beholden to it

And both the new Batman Beyond and Earth 2: Society comics and the Darkseid War crossover will spin directly out of their appearances in Convergence.

"At the DC retailer roadshow at Orlando on Friday, a retailer asked about this and was told that Justice League will be his only monthly comic book going forward" could just mean transitioning into July. I hope so. He's much better writing for a character than a team.

That begins wrapped up in the Bloodlines event. I assume Hitman is the only good to come from it, and I shouldn't look into Bloodlines any further than that The Demon Annual he debuts in.

e: Though, by this list http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2010/09/06/top-five-bloodlines-characters/ it seems like every other character was such a 1993 disaster (and according to the list those are the good ones!) that it might be fun. Y'all should check out the Annual, Futures End issue or #5 if you're assuming it's this one thing. I think they're pretty special comics.
The dumb bawdy stuff is just fun to post.

e: Not trying to play it down. It's a definite part, but there's a lot more to the series.
ee: And not to discount any feelings fans have against the change from Nightwing. I haven't really read any of his solo series before this one (eee: 'cept if BnR counts.)

eeee: Convergence tie-in trade dress REVEALED!!!

'We Are Robin' article
http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/2015/03/09/we-are-robin-comic-book-exclusive/24635301/

quote:

Instead of just one Robin, DC Comics is unleashing a whole flock of them on Gotham City this summer.

What used to be the mantle of Batman's teenage sidekick is now worn by many diverse youngsters clad in the familiar "R" in We Are Robin, a new series debuting June 24 from writer Lee Bermejo (Batman: Noel) and artists Rob Haynes and Khary Randolph.

Part of a large crop of new comic books debuting after the Convergence event series, We Are Robin focuses on Duke Thomas, an African-American kid who's played an important role recently in the main Batman series, as he's indoctrinated into this new Robin movement to protect and serve Gotham.

When the series opens, it really doesn't have an identity, Bermejo says, but the group knows its mission statement. "It's one thing to put a hashtag on your Twitter account as a teenager and feel like you're part of something. It's a whole other thing when the (stuff) hits the fan and you have to stand up for what you believe in."

Duke is the reader's way into this street-smart world — he's had interactions with the Dark Knight before so he isn't a complete rookie — and Bermejo is focusing on him and other newbies rather than the folks who've been Robin previously such as Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Stephanie Brown, Dick Grayson and most recently Damian Wayne, Batman's son.

"I'm not going to rule anything out at this point," Bermejo says, "but what I'm trying to with this series is not address so much the Robins that have come before but the new generation of teenagers out there, really from various backgrounds."

We Are Robin is one of the post-Convergence books primed to explore diversity in the DC Universe for a growing readership — Bermejo sees it as a chance to expand the Robin character past "teenage white kids who all look the same."

And if he avoided reflecting our own cities and younger generation in the comic, "you'd be shirking a pretty big responsibility," he adds. "Just with everything that we've seen happen recently with Ferguson, there's a lot of issues here that I think can be touched on and should be touched on.

"There's that element of this particular moment we're passing right now, and with a book like this you have a chance to comment about certain things and bring them into the Bat-universe in real interesting ways."

As a longtime fan of the Dark Knight and his supporting players, Bermejo admits that he always had a hard time figuring out why Batman would have a teen sidekick and put a kid in danger in the first place — for the writer, that was the beginning of how a series such as We Are Robin could work.

"Maybe there could possibly be many of these kids out there on the streets who have different talents and different capabilities that could be useful to Batman," says Bermejo.

"With ideas and big concepts, teenagers can get really passionate about that stuff and it can be their whole life. That was something interesting to me, that this thing could be bigger than just one guy jumping around in a domino mask."

Another aspect working in Bermejo's favor: the inherent malleability of Gotham's finest.

"You can take that concept of Robin and really play with it and really stretch it and expand upon it and bend it," he says. "It still will hold resemblance to the core of the character in the Bat-mythos."

Bit with Ennis on Section 8 + solicitation
http://www.ew.com/article/2015/03/09/get-ready-return-one-worst-superteams-ever-dcs-section-eight

quote:

DC’s Hitman, created by Garth Ennis and John McCrea (of Preacher fame), is a ’90s cult classic. It’s the story of Tommy Monaghan, a superpowered contract killer who specializes in taking out superhumans (and barely using his own superpowers)—and it was a no-holds-barred playground for Ennis and McCrea, showcasing their trademark black humor and biting satire.

Hitman ended in 2001; outside of the odd special or two (like 2007’s JLA/Hitman crossover), the book’s setting and characters haven’t gotten much attention lately. But as many fans noticed when DC announced an exciting, diverse wave of 25 new books slated to debut in June, one of the surprising gems tucked away in the announcement was a book called Section Eight by Garth Ennis and John McCrea—and today, EW has the exclusive first details on the acclaimed team’s return to the DCU.

As Hitman fans already know, Section Eight is the name of the satirical superteam that first appeared in Hitman #18. They’re a motley crew of delusional washups with terrible superpowers, such as grotesque drunkenness and “the power of Frenchness.” Most of them died. So what’s this new Section Eight going to be about?

“Essentially, through circumstances revealed during the first episode, team leader Sixpack returns to Gotham City and sets about reforming Section Eight,” says writer Garth Ennis. “The appalling Bueno Excellente is still around, and Dogwelder manages a mysterious reappearance. Demon barman Baytor is also drafted in. Three new characters qualify for the team—Powertool, Guts and the Grapplah—but that’s only seven. The story essentially involves Sixpack making his way round the DC Universe, trying to sign up that elusive eighth hero. Clearly there’s no shortage of candidates keen to avoid the job.”

Ennis notes that, despite the team’s strong connection to Tommy Monaghan, he won’t be appearing outside of “a very brief flashback appearance in the prologue.” We will, however, be seeing a number of characters from across the established DCU as Sixpack seeks to recruit his eighth teammate, even taking a tour of DC’s mystical realms.

It has been a while since readers have had the chance to revisit the Hitman/Section Eight corner of the DC Universe, but it’s Ennis and McCrea’s intent to make the new book—which will be a six-issue miniseries—reminiscent of everything fans loved about Hitman.

“I suppose we’ll find out soon enough if this is the perfect time for Section Eight to return or not, but I like to think the team will remain true to themselves,” says Ennis. “Obviously there are several new characters, but the tone of the book will be very much in keeping with Section Eight’s previous adventures.”

Section 8 #1 goes on sale June 10, 2015. Your first look at the cover is below, along with the official hype copy:

He gathers old friends Bueno Excellente, Baytor and the seemingly reborn Dogwelder, along with some new faces—but he still needs that elusive eighth member. And that’s when the Dark Knight Detective gets an offer he can’t refuse in part one of this unforgettable six-issue miniseries.

They're probably going HEY GUYS! because they were previously publishing the Beyond universe digital shorts during N52 time without establishing them in continuity (right? I dunno.)

Anyone want to pick up a Jurgens comic these days anyway? Who cares.

Well, with the rest of the new launch being fairly fresh and exciting, it's a bummer that it wasn't a clean sweep and there are still a few dinosauruses in there.

I'm still crossing my fingers for Dr. Fate being a fully enjoyable comic.

Bill Sienkiewicz cover for Gotham by Midnight. That looks a lot different than what I'd assume for Bill Sienkiewicz. Maybe I haven't seen anything of his from the last decade or two. Looks more like Andrea Sorrentino.
