When eco mode is enabled it adjusts the speed of the engine to match load. Full load == full throttle. Might still be quieter than others anyway, don't have a whole lot of experience.

Normally I would be all over the specialty garage, but are high acuity repairs generally a safer bet with the dealership? Or should I just eat the cost and make it happen with the specialty place?

E: For the record, I hate myself for considering this--considering how much I hate the dealership. Just wondering if it's worth considering. Or talk me out of it, please.

It really just depends. You can't blankly state all dealerships are bad and all independent shops are good...Best you can do is ask around for recommendations. Yelp (although it doesn't divide between service & sales, you have to read carefully), Toyota forums, even ask here if someone has experience with a particular shop.

Is this stuff really going to gently caress up the washer fluid sensor on my Volvo S60? There are several reviews on Amazon complaining about it. My car's manu says to use 'Volvo washer fluid or equivilant' but no indication is given for what specific fluid I should actually use.

In my experience you'll get a waxy buildup around your nozzles and that probably has something to do with the sensor failure. I don't think my car has one. Just apply Rain-X normally or better yet Aquapel.

Anyway, yes, it's very common. I blame the salt on the roads in winter for making it worse here. Often initiates where someone's fitted a clip-on balance weight. The corrosion expands out and pushes the bead away so it doesn't seal any more. To properly fix it, you need the tyre off, and to use a wire wheel etc to remove it all from where the tyre seats, any tyre place should be able to sort you out (you can't really pull or refit the tyre yourself, so you may as well get them to do it).

If the wheels are a bit shabby anyway, and you were considering refurbishing them, now would be the time.

Well I don't remember exactly what they said. It was leaking for sure. The wheel doesn't look bad at all from the outside. They don't use salt here so it's weird. The tire shop said I would have to buy new wheels so maybe I should ask around? They're just OEM Mazda wheels though.

The nightmare is over.

GM spent as little as possible on the Cavalier so that isn't super surprising. They're kind of a reviled car (sorry) and despite them being so ubiquitous not long ago I don't see them on the road much anymore or even their replacement, the Cobalt.

Ah, mine didn't have ABS, so I lost everything. I was figuring you'd lose more of what little braking ability you had every time you hit the pedal.

Most cars since the 70s have a dual master cylinder so even if you lose pressure on one circuit you can keep braking on two wheels. It's a pretty great thing for cars to have, really. But you're right, as if you keep going and it is spraying fluid the level will drop and then you'll lose pressure in the other circuit too.

Thanks for all the help.

Drove just fine all this past year. Now that it is getting cold again the issue seems to have cropped back up. I imagine I might want to check coolant levels, since I was flooding it when it was overheating, right?

Most parts stores outside of California and Hawaii will scan codes or loan out the code scanner for free. Then it doesn't have to be a guessing game. And yes of course you should replace your lost coolant. :)

Or, it occurs to me that I maybe should also consider getting some cheap snows for the winter and then getting summers when snow season is over. Would this be a good idea even though our snow is one or twice a month October - May, with 50-60 degree days scattered through that entire timeframe? Are there any snows I should be looking for in particular? I already have a spare set of steel wheels.

The original DWS is End of Life so probably getting harder to get. It's being replaced by new models including DWS 06 I believe? They're good tires, but no reason to believe competition can't happen. The Bridgestone RE970as were pretty comparable and I don't know what their most current model is.
