When eco mode is enabled it adjusts the speed of the engine to match load. Full load == full throttle. Might still be quieter than others anyway, don't have a whole lot of experience.

I discovered the other day that apparently my wheels are corroding and the tire came off the bead. Is there a way to repair them or do I have to buy new ones? Mazda 3 if that matters, I see this was a very common issue in the UK for some reason.

The wheel doesn't look bad at all from the outside. They don't use salt here so it's weird. The tire shop said I would have to buy new wheels so maybe I should ask around? They're just OEM Mazda wheels though.

Google an alloy wheel reconditioner, there's bound to be one in your town. Usually much cheaper per wheel than brand new rims. It looks like there is a well-rated wheel repair shop around. I just was afraid they had to be replaced because that's what the guy at the store said. I'll see if they're cheaper than buying a new set of wheels. Otherwise it's time for some lightweight RPF1s. Thank you.

Apparently the car is shifting fine right now, but the code has been there for a while (and comes back when it's cleared). If it's the V6 I know those transmissions were very problematic.

I also have empirical evidence leading me to believe that the "manufacturer drive cycle" is bullshit. Seafoaming the intake caused a pending code to set for lean mixture at upstream O2 sensor, so during a cold start I reset OBD codes and headed for the highway - within 4 minutes of <40 mph driving getting there, all monitors except catalyst were set - something that should not have happened according to GM drive cycle requirements. ~40 miles of 66mph highway later with the catalyst monitor still incomplete, I pulled into a parking lot where I sat for about a minute in drive with the brake pressed, and catalyst monitor readied itself. GM spent as little as possible on the Cavalier so that isn't super surprising. They're kind of a reviled car (sorry) and despite them being so ubiquitous not long ago I don't see them on the road much anymore or even their replacement, the Cobalt.

Hey guys. 2006 Mazda 3. I had to slam on the brakes for a cat that ran in front of me. ABS went off really hard and now my pedal is going almost to the floor to get any braking. Did the ABS have a big air bubble in it? Or maybe I burst a line? The fluid level is normal I think but I'll have to check in the morning too.

Godholio posted:If you blew a line you'd have zero braking. Well, I know that isn't quite true. I would have 2 out of 4 wheels braking, until the fluid got low enough. But, I don't think that's what happened. I was wondering if it's possible for the ABS controller to have an air bubble in it or let air into the system somehow.

Godholio posted:Ah, mine didn't have ABS, so I lost everything. I was figuring you'd lose more of what little braking ability you had every time you hit the pedal. Most cars since the 70s have a dual master cylinder so even if you lose pressure on one circuit you can keep braking on two wheels. It's a pretty great thing for cars to have, really. But you're right, as if you keep going and it is spraying fluid the level will drop and then you'll lose pressure in the other circuit too. Thanks for all the help.

I think it may have had an issue changing gears once too (its an automatic), but I might be remembering a different time. Battery was bought new the year before, so I didn't think that was the problem, despite the light, and then the rest of the winter was very mild so I didn't have the issue anymore. Drove just fine all this past year. Now that it is getting cold again the issue seems to have cropped back up. If the car gets very cold it does this squealing noise and the battery light keeps flickering on and off. Any ideas? You need to replace your alternator belt or maybe have the pulleys adjusted. Do not attempt to use "belt dressing".

pwnyXpress posted:Just wanted to follow up since I think I fixed this today. The belt itself was actually fine, but the tension spring had apparently worn out so I replaced the spring and pulley there. Took it on a small jaunt to the store and back and it seems to be running great, and much quieter, than it has in the past, but the "Get Engine Serviced Soon" light is still on. Is that still on because something else is wrong, or is it something I can turn off or will go off at some point? I imagine I might want to check coolant levels, since I was flooding it when it was overheating, right? Most parts stores outside of California and Hawaii will scan codes or loan out the code scanner for free. Then it doesn't have to be a guessing game. And yes of course you should replace your lost coolant.

Looking at Tire Rack, though, the BFGoodrich GForce Comp2-A/S are supposed to be even better. Are those worth considering too, or should I just go with the DWS? The original DWS is End of Life so probably getting harder to get. It's being replaced by new models including DWS 06 I believe? They're good tires, but no reason to believe competition can't happen. The Bridgestone RE970as were pretty comparable and I don't know what their most current model is. If you live in a climate like Seattle and are driving a Subaru you should be fine with all season tires if you are careful.
