I worked in the mall where the first movie was filmed while it was being filmed. They did a lot of funny things to cut costs, like filming during the day whilst the mall was open, recruiting hundreds of extras from the crowds of shoppers, gathering props from the stores around the mall like shopping bags and such, and they would just film scenes willy nilly wherever they wanted to get a shot. Two things I remember being funny were the ball pit; the film crew having a miserable time preventing teenagers from jumping into it constantly, and at the time I was a literal plain shirt mall cop and we had to catch a running shoplifter who tried to escape through the film set and we cuffed and dragged him away right in front of the cast. Which was totally awesome. Also Jayma Mays was beautiful and friendly but was only actually there for like two days of fiming. Oh! OH! Also the mall was across the street from an apartment complex where the burlington police had a near shootout and a bunch of state police vehicles and helicopters had to rush to the location and got confused as they were filming the outdoor scenes and a bunch of real life swat vans showed up on set confused as to where the real crime was happening. Hilarious!
