But he's right!
It is very distressing to find out that Chihayafuru 3 was being vote brigaded on MAL, half because the female protag feeds incel tears, half so they could push up the canceled porn show by comparison. Thank God MAL rolled out a new algo to correct this and save Chihaya.

Interspecies Reviewers. A show that went from horny to porny in a few epsidoes and got taken down by Funimation with almost no notice.

Ok, so here's how things went:

  1. MyAnimeList has become the de facto Rotten Tomatoes analogue for anime based on its massive size and API, which has led to people hooking apps and such into it. I make no claim to its quality, either way, but just putting it out there that it's probably more trafficked than ANN at this point.
  2. Summer 2019: Vinland Saga starts airing. This is a cool srs bsns action/adventure show from the mangaka that wrote perennial favorite Planetes. It is well received and score
  3. Fall 2019: Chihayafuru 3 starts airing. Vinland Saga starts its second cour. However, Chihaya starts to rapidly overtake Vinland in site popularity and breaks through to become the "Top Airing Anime" on the site.
  4. Within days, review spam bots start brigading both series, giving Vinland 10/10 scores and Chihaya 1/10. The site admins are notified, and, visibly, nothing is done for months.
  5. Winter 2020: Funimation licenses and begins airing Interspecies Reviewers, a straight-up mediocre hentai that, for whatever reason, is also airing in Japan. Chuds cannot loving wait to watch this, hand on dick.
  6. 3 episodes in, Funimation is confronted with the realization of what they've done. Their advertisers are livid. They pull the rest of the season, and Tokyo MX followed in short order.
  7. Chuds lose their everloving minds. Screeds about censorship and SJWs start showing up everywhere. At this point, the bots come out in full force. Tens of thousands of reviews start appearing overnight pushing IR up to 2nd all time behind FMA: Brotherhood
  8. Two YouTube personalities with 1m+ subscribers each, release videos directing people to make new MAL accounts in order to leave fake reviews.
  9. Having finally had enough, MyAnimeList implements a new algorithm to weed out the troll/duplicate reviews. Normality is slowly being restored.

CHARTS AND GRAFFS

How big was the difference? Chihayafuru 3 went from the equivalent of a C+ to an A-.

How hard did IR get brigaded? Here's the chart with before/after cancellation. It got more than 90% of its reviews post-cancellation and almost all of them were 1/10 or 10/10.

Were there any notable anime not mentioned? Weirdly enough, Pingu in the City got a massive drop in score from 8.43 to 6.80. This anime was brigaded in 2017 after MAL staff deleted many reviews for being nothing but Pingu memes, which is against the site rules.

So what you're saying is it had nothing to do with the "incel tears" of "chuds" trying to push up Interspecies Reviewers.

If you are asking if I have my hands on the backend db to compare the IPs of who brigaded Vinland/Chihaya vs. who brigaded IR, no I don't work there. If you have some sort of inclination to believe that the overlap isn't there, live your best life with that.

Up to episode 21. Watching the anime after reading the manga has made me understand Suo and the overall story a bit more.

When he's first introduced, he's framed as a force of nature with his talent in discerning sound, but that talent is merely a compliment to his true specialty: feinting his opponent into faults. rather than coasting off of his hearing ability and taking 25 of his 28 cards, he uses that talent to pressure his opponent into playing faster than they're used to, making them easier to bait into faults. This play style defines a lot of who Suo is as a character: it's designed to destroy the opponent's confidence in their play, as shown in his first victim Takemura. But this desire to break people goes even beyond the game, when he outright says Chihaya doesn't deserve to be Queen because of her fortunate life and deliberately making himself look younger in his fifth match against Harada.

Suo's behavior is explained by upbringing by his aunt Yukiko and his condition. Suo's aunt is a childless divorcee and an elderly worker, all of which are stigmatized in Japan. Further complicating things is her condition which will blind her, making her even more of a burden to society's eyes. The flashback with Yukiko emphasizes her concern over the children's physical health, taking every preventative measure possible to assure they don't end up with a disability like hers. In this context her last words to Suo, "make something of yourself" is a warning: "don't end up like me," a message that Suo receives too late when he learns that he has the exact same condition as her.

Suo initially thought that becoming the Master would fulfill this goal. He expected some form of celebrity to surround him in his circle, but all the Master title did was intimidate them, further isolating him from the rest of the world. Being the Master of karuta wasn't enough to "make something of himself," he has to up the ante and make himself stick out. He has to feed on other people's passion, both by playing in a way that is so dominant it's demoralizing and by riling up the greater karuta community through his actions, before he eventually becomes irrelevant like his aunt.

Suo's greater role in the story is to serve as an antithesis to the central theme of Chihayafuru: passion, for both a loved one and for karuta. Throughout the whole story, karuta is framed as a game that welcomes anyone with a passion for it regardless of gender, social status, age, etc. It's a place where both Chihaya, a person who would have been conventionally popular if it weren't for her love of karuta ("wasted beauty" is her lovely nickname after all), and Shinobu, a person so isolated from people her age that karuta is literally her only friend, can thrive. Similarly, Chihaya and Arata's passion brings them to each other and Taichi's efforts into karuta parallel his passion for Chihaya. Suo's existence as a character: his play style, backstory and status as Master, argues that "your passion will betray you." Whether it be a debilitating illness, old age, running into an impenetrable wall like Suo, or because the person you like simply doesn't return your feelings, your efforts will be wasted. In the karuta aspect at least, he's proven wrong time and again by the people who play him and retain their passion for the game.

Great chapter as always. I love how this manga explores all of these side characters because it brings this whole karuta world to life. March Comes in like a Lion does the same thing and it works just as well in that series.

Super hyped for these climactic final matches!
