Hunting Monsters: Now brought to you by Capcom! ... wait

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpFsNeubnu

Capcom delivers on their year-long promise, and here we are, just in time for a Nintendo Handheld with two analogs! ... sort of.

IRC is dead, long live Discord

:siren: Join the Discord/PM or IM one another if you want to organize games, please stop posting your PSN/Friend Codes/(A/S/L) in the thread in a vain attempt at organizing a group to play with, it's spammy and doesn't really do much!! :siren:

Monster Hunter is an Action-RPG series developed and published by Capcom. The aim of the game is to hunt the biggest and most dangerous game, so that you can make ridiculous equipment out of it and take on even scarier creatures. You can play alone or with up to 3 other manly men or busty babes. Worried village elders or the esoteric Hunter's Guild will send you out on dangerous missions, with little in way apart from what you bring yourself, to kill these incredible beasts.

Having spawned an entire genre of game that now exists solely on the PSVita aside from this series, this game still manages to be in its own category of game that you will not find anywhere else on the 3DS. This game is raw HUNTING-ACTION! There are no levels or other such nonsense. A high-ranked player survives largely on skill alone, and the difference between newbie and high-level armor is the ability to soak up maybe 2-3 extra hits before dying. Now features riding giant toads and sharks over large cliff faces, because the games weren't ridiculous enough before.

  • There are no 'levels' in Monster Hunter. You unlock additional content by "ranking up" by completing specific missions, which are generally increasingly more difficult hunts.
  • Hunting a monster is not limited to just killing it dead, you can also capture it when it is weak by using a trap and tranquilizers. This will usually result in even more parts obtained.
  • Equipment is crafted by using monster parts that you gather by hunting them or finding them in the field.
  • Increasing your Defense is done by making higher rank armors, however this will not stop you from dying often against the later monsters.
  • Armor Skills. Each piece of armor has a few points of specific skills, once you get enough points from your armor, they will activate. These are the real tools of the hunt. They vary from anything simple like "attack up" to incredibly useful utilities like "auto tracker" or "speed sharpening".
  • There are 14 different weapon classes to hunt with. All of the melee weapons have a "sharpness" rating, which degrades as you use it. It must be restored by stopping to sharpen the weapon. Ranged weapons use ammunition.
  • There is a kitchen that is important to utilize. Combining certain foods/drinks will result in different buffs that will carry over into the missions. You can also acquire specific skills through this method that you usually couldn't otherwise (such as a skill that causes bombs to get bigger, or a skill that makes you able to fall from infinite height and not flinch).
  • Missions are timed. The general limit is 50 minutes, however special instances have a shorter limit. If you don't complete your objective in this time, you fail.
  • You have limited knockouts. If you die 3 times, you fail the mission. In very special instances, you are only allowed a single death.

First Generation:

Monster Hunter
The original game, for PS2. Attacks were controlled with the second analog stick, camera movement with the d-pad, and one of those few games with online play (probably the best on the console).
NA release date: September 2004
PAL release date: May 2005

Monster Hunter Freedom
The PSP port of the original game's JP-only "expansion", for hunting on the go! Features local ad-hoc multiplayer and everything the original had.
NA/PAL release date: May 2006

Second Generation:

Monster Hunter Dos
The sequel to the original, never released outside of Japan. The maps were redone, more online quests added, and a boatload of new monsters introduced to the series.
JP release date: Feburary 2006

Monster Hunter Freedom 2
The PSP port of the second game, because it's a much better game than the first was. However, it's been rendered obsolete by its sequel...
NA release date: August 2007
PAL release date: September 2007

Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (Original Thread)
The "compilation" game of Gen 2, just how Ultimate is the Gen 3 compilation. Features all of the monsters up until that point plus several new additions, totaling a massive 57 boss creatures to hunt. If you want to get into the series and have a PSP, this is the title to invest in.
NA/PAL release date: June 2009

Third Generation:

Monster Hunter Tri (Original Thread)
The console reboot of the series. Much of the content has been shaved down or redone entirely. Features far fewer boss monsters and equipment, but looks gorgeous. The game's online servers have been taken down as of Ultimate's release, so High Rank content and the online bosses are no longer accessible.
NA/PAL release date: April 2010

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Original Thread)
The 3rd gen PSP/PS3 title, continues where Tri left off by once again retooling how various weapons function and introducing new monsters. If you're not satisfied between Unite and Tri, this is the next stop. Check the original thread for fan translation links and other assorted info.
JP release date (PSP): December 2010
JP release date (PS3): August 2011

/ (Original Thread)
Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate
Just like Freedom Unite, this is where 3rd Gen will make its final stop, with every monster ever made for 3rd Gen being included plus some extras. 50 total bosses are to be found in this installment. The WiiU version can be played directly online and the 3DS version supports either local play or tunneled online play via a WiiU Console.
JP release date (3DS): December 2011
JP release date (WiiU): December 2012
NA/PAL release date (Both): March 2013

Current Generation:

Monster Hunter 4
The first foray into the Fourth Generation of MH. With the competition of other games encroaching on MH's rather aged mechanics, they took a larger step out of their comfort zone with this entry and added a slew of new upgrades to the game and the engine. It is the first portable game with its own enabled Wi-Fi protocol, there is the new "mounting" mechanic, areas are now designed with an enhanced vertical aspect, two new weapon classes, and underwater fights are out of the game for good this time.
JP release date: September 2013

/
:siren: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate :siren:
Despite not being available for WiiU, we still have the same subtitle. This is the version of 4 released to the rest of the world, and the big thing here is a focus on "past favorites". Nearly every monster from 2nd Gen has been brought back to this entry and even more new monsters have been added, providing one of the most varied sets of monsters available in the series.
JP release date: October 2014
NA/PAL release date: February 2015

Other:

Monster Hunter Frontier
The PC MMO of the series. Currently only running in various asian countries (Taiwan, Japan, Korea), it features huge lobbies, a pseudo-leveling system, ludicrous amounts of gear, new maps, and its own set of exclusive beasts (on top of everything that isn't exclusive to MHFU/3rd Generation), totaling at well over 60 different boss monsters to hunt. Play long enough and you'll gain access to completely redone versions of many of the boss monsters, shooting the unique hunt count to over 100. Hangame has forfeited the contract to publish the game in Korea, so it is closed down. That means if you want to play the MMO, you're going to have to pay to play either the Chinese or Japanese version. The amount of grinding makes this game a joke despite the huge content well. Not recommended, even if you can actually gain access and pay for it.

Monster Hunter Online
Another PC MMO published by Tencent Games that utilizes the Crytek Engine. It has a lot of distinct differences in the gameplay and is currently stuck in perpetual beta periods, it has been stated that it is unlikely to be released outside of Chinese territories.
:siren: This game is in Open Beta with no region locking if you want to try and get your hands dirty, no quality guarantees though :siren:

How do I know if I'll like this series or not?
There are demos for both 3U and 4U on 3DS (but these are not great representations of your true gameplay experience), and additionally if you own a PSVita there are at least 4 other games that are basically Monster Hunter descendants but far easier to get involved with right away (Toukiden is the most direct parallel, but see also God Eater/Soul Sacrifice/Freedom Wars)
Keep in mind that Monster Hunter is a unique game that doesn't really match any other gameplay style, and often takes 8 or more hours for most people to claim that it "clicked" and they became addicted.

HOW DO I MOVE THE CAMERA WHILE ALSO MOVING MY DUDE?! :byodood:
Lock-on was added just for you! If you don't want to shell out for a New-3DS or a Circle Pad attachment, you can either use the lockon or try to finagle the virtual dpad on the touch screen.

Can I play with people from different regions in 4 Ultimate's online?
Yes! The game will support cross-region online play (only between NA/PAL copies of the game).

Where do I find X in Monster Hunter Y?
If you're playing Unite, check here or here.
If you're playing Tri, check here.
If you're playing Portable 3rd, check here.
If you're playing Tri Ultimate, check here.
If you're playing 4 Ultimate, check here.

Do I kill it, or capture it?
A timeless question. 90% of the time, the answer is "unless you can only get it from carving, you should capture the monster". Capturing results in more rewards overall and generally takes less time.

Which weapon is the best?
Read the weapon guides below and see which one tickles your fancy! There are no longer objectively good/bad weapons in these games anymore, so use your favorites.

Just a cage of bones, there's nothing inside.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

You've been waiting, and now it's here! I hope you really like your 3DS and hated underwater-hunting, because you're stuck with the former and the latter is gone forever.

New to 4 Ultimate:
  • A bunch of even newer monsters! And the return of nearly all of the old favorites! Giant monkies, snakes, spiders, and beetles, oh my~
  • More new weapon classes! Do you take on the acrobatic and flashy Insect Glaive, or the new all-in-one toolkit that is the Charge Blade?
  • The missing Z axis! There is now a large emphasis on climbing and greatly improved aerial functionality (in that it exists at all now).
  • MOUNT YOUR FRIENDS QUARRY! With the added emphasis on aerial and vertical movement, you are given the power to wrestle them to the ground with just your knife in a sheer display of dominance.
  • For old fans of the series, there's a world tour featuring almost all of the old towns from the previous games! That nostalgia hype!
  • Another new status: Frenzy Virus. This poo poo makes monsters crazy and is essentially :frogout2:, and if you learn how to handle it, it provides a pretty decent boost to your own strength as well!
  • Felyne Partners are back and you can give them stupid costumes! Want to dress your cat up as Megaman? Hell yeah you do, Capcom sure as hell isn't making another one of those games so this is the best you'll get.
  • And more!

:siren:GET THE 1.1 PATCH FOR A COOL NEWBIE KIT:siren:

I played 3U and remember weird poo poo with charms, what's the deal there?
They fixed it this time, so unless you're turbosperging no need to worry about it anyore!

The n3DS nub sucks!!
Kind of. It's not a proper analog stick, for Monster Hunter specifically it functions as a virtual d-pad, so only the cardinal directions are even accepted as inputs. Regardless, https://www.reddit.com/r/3DS/comments/44spty/i_replaced_my_cstick_with_a_psp_analog_stick/ this has been met with some positivity

Does this game even have a manual?
Press the home button before launching the game properly to access it on the 3DS.

Which quests do I need to do to unlock more quests?
Check for the 'Key Quest' quests on the pages here (offline) and here (online).

Is there some way to increase my health/stamina?
Before each mission, either talk to the cat chef in the village while playing solo, or have a seat at the lunch tables when online.

Where the gently caress are all of the mining/bug spots?
Check these

How does mounting actually work??
It's essentially a status on the monster like Paralysis or Poison. Every monster has a base "resistance" to "Mounting" which is reduced by executing attacks against them while airborne. Once you've passed the threshold, the monster will fall to the ground and anybody can walk up to it and automatically mount.
While mounted, the monster will do its best to shake you off and otherwise cause trouble for everybody involved. Mash the A button to bring the meter closer to full, stop mashing and hold R when you see the little monster head turn orange/red until the monster calms down and resume mashing. If you are able to fill the meter before being tossed off, you will have successfully brought down the monster and it serves functionally as a free Stun.
Note that it is common etiquette to NOT attack the monster while somebody has mounted it and is trying to bring it down. Also note that every time the monster is knocked down for mounting, regardless of whether anybody successfully mounts it or performs the takedown, it now has increased "Mounting" resistance and will require more attacks from the air than before to repeat the process.

What are the hunting horn songs?
Check here.

Does it support cross-region play?
NA and EU/PAL copies can play adhoc and online with each other. JP is still separated.

How do I play online with my 3DS?
Just head over to the guild hall. On the touchscreen, you can either directly access friends by clicking on them, or you can click the "World Map" button, click on the guild hall, and select "Online Multiplayer" and either create or find a lobby.

What is the deal with Palico and why should I care?
Most of what you need to know about Palico.

I just got to G-Rank and everything is killing me dead, what do I do?!
Since Seregios is the first urgent quest in G1, many players will recommend farming up the Seregios X set for use through G-Rank.

Gem/Mantle drop rates suck! What do I do?
Break all of the parts, cut the tail, get as many shinies as possible, complete the subquest, make sure to check whether you can get it from carves or capture only. Those 2-3% drop rates may look grim but you have quite a lot of them happening at once.

If you want to get serious about it, try to charm farm a talisman with +Carving and gem out the Nerscylla Z set (available from G2) for Carving God, eat for Felyne Carver (Lo/Hi), and do tail-cut runs where you just carve the tail as much as possible.

Where is that program that makes armor sets for me?
Athena's rear end

What is going on with Apex/Frenzy?
It is very important that you complete the single player campaign and unlock the Wyceum and Wystones. After this, you'll need to grind out Gathering Hall/Elder Hall to start upgrading them.

How to unlock the stones for dealing with Apex monsters: Complete G1★ Gathering Hall Quest "Advanced: Tiger-sharq" and G2★ Gathering Hall Quest "Advanced: Spider Study" :siren: VERY IMPORTANT :siren:
How to unlock a second carry slot for Wystones: Complete G2★ Gathering Hall Quest "Advanced: Escaped Convicts" and G3★ Gathering Hall Quest "Advanced: Lab Partners"

Charm Farming is boooorrrring!
You shouldn't even start charm farming until G-rank. Either do Felyne Explorer runs in Dunes while mining all of the blue mining nodes, or hitch up with some people and run some lv140 Guild Quests. If you have four people who can effectively sleepbomb, doing a multi-hunt with Oroshi Kirin as the second target is considered a good way to simultaneously roll up Melding-bait charms while farming for Relic equipment.

A more 'efficient' means via mining as long as you have Charm God in your set it's the only thing that matters.
Probably the most 'efficient' mining method this is based on a G2 quest where you hunt 15 Remobra. If you're able to grab the meteor and subquest out, it's the quickest way to farm charms with a charmer set.

Check out GaijinHunter's Melding guide for information on how to best recycle the garbage charms you receive from the above.

14 weapon types in all for you to mess around with. There generally isn't a "best" style, so check out the videos and see which you prefer!

Sword and Shield
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ufsud-C09Yk

Mostly unchanged from 3U, this small weapon may look like it's too small and kind of weak, but it makes up for it with near unmatched speed as well as the ability to both block and use items with the weapon drawn. Best utilized as a means of dealing heavy amounts of elemental or status damage while bringing varied item support for yourself and/or your team.

Dual Swords
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQv_qrL7no4

Updated with a few new tricks from 3U, this weapon is all about ridiculous offense. You sacrifice any sort of defense and regular evasion techniques to go balls-to-the-wall with these. Easily the fastest weapon, on top of a large amount of multi-hit combos and a special power called 'demon dance' (or 'demonize') that gives you even crazier (and far more powerful) combos, this weapon is all about finding an in and never giving the monster any peace. Using the demon dance with these puppies causes a new spirit gauge to build up, and as long as there is energy stored, all of your un-demonized attacks deal extra damage!

Long Sword
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBUkSSbcuTk

Slightly nerfed from 3U, the long sword is exactly what it sounds like. Has the mobility of the Sword and Shield with the range of the Great Sword. Hitting a monster with it causes your spirit gauge to fill, which can be unleashed in a flurry of attacks with increased power. Everybody will hate you if you use this weapon poorly as your spamfest causes everybody else to trip constantly. Notable addition to the weapon is a dashing attack that moves you forward a pretty large amount and combos back into Spirit Slashes,

Great Sword
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVxO7xOYqS8

Even after all of these years, Great Sword is probably the strongest weapon in the game per-attack. Big, slow, and incredibly powerful. A giant sword that you can combo your swings with until your arms fall off, or use as a body-sized shield against oncoming attacks at the cost of your sword's durability. They remain mostly unchanged from 3U, including the various slaps that would cause knock-out damage against monsters that would execute mid-combo. Not a simple weapon by any means, not recommended for beginners to the game. Now with an even larger swing attack!

Switch Axe
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRv1_mGf2R8

Also nerfed from 3U, the switch axe is like an amalgamation of the best traits from the stable of melee weaponry. You have great sword-esque attack power, long sword-esque attack speed, a pseudo-wyvern fire function ala gunlance, the side-stepping dodges of a lance, and the rolls of regular weapons in addition to quicker recovery from heavy attacks. This is a very aggressive weapon that requires you to not be afraid of getting in and sticking to your gameplan, and the evasion style of the weapon has grown considerably stronger in this entry of the series.

Lance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bikIBt4hs4

With the gameplay changes made in 4U, Lance still remains the best class for avoiding damage of any kind. You can hardly move when wielding the weapon, but most anything can be blocked head-on and much better than with a Sword and Shield or Great Sword. On top of this heavily defense-oriented fight style, the weapon features the most technically efficient manner of evasion in the game. Lances also have the advantage of being able to break monster parts that require impact damage or cut off tails and anything else that requires cutting damage. You can also perform a sick sk8 flip and stab things in the air.

Gunlance
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcOKIvrWUL0

This weapon has seen the most changes since 3U, and for the better. What if instead of poking monsters with a skimpy little lance, your lance was instead a big cannon on a stick? That's Gunlance. Features many of the same benefits Lances do, but has a distinct playstyle involving a lot of explosions and gunfire. Very flashy, also probably tied for "most annoying weapon" next to Longsword when it comes to debilitating your team members with callous play.

Hammer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQD-adUNd10

Pretty much unchanged from 3U, Hammer is the king of knock outs and heavy impact damage. You move slightly slower with it wielded and don't have much for closing range, but you do crazy amounts of damage and if done right, the monster will spend half of the fight dizzy because you kept hitting it in the face. One of the best changes made in 4U is now that Hunters can attack while in the air, you can use your hammer to launch fellow players straight at the monster for a sick-nasty combo attack fastball special.

Hunting Horn
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-d8xCih5LSg

Hunting Horn is typically considered the main 'support' weapon, allowing you to buff your party with various effects depending on what the horn is. Moderately fast attacks allow you to rack up the damage and allow you to store music notes to play out at any time in the middle of combat to quickly buff yourself and party. Hunting Horn buffs allow you and your party to do many things otherwise not usually possible, such as moving at top speed while wielding it, being able to hit monsters and not bounce off if your sharpness is too low, having roar/earthquake/damage resistance, increased attack, and other widely-applicable effects.

Charge Blade
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1LE1D5YSZM
Do you like the Sword and Shield, but wish it were stronger? Do you like the Switch Axe, but find the sword half kind of boring? Do you still really wish you could blow things up but don't enjoy Gunlance? Well, somehow, this weapon combines all three of those and more into one of the most technically complex pieces of equipment in this series. The weapon is extremely powerful in both raw strength and utility, but requires a lot of practice to master.

Insect Glaive
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xTqOFUMKaAE
Do you like doing "flips'n'poo poo"? Do you like mounting monsters? Do you like flying through the air constantly? Do you like having on-command buffs to increase your speed, strength, and immunity? This is the weapon for you. A very aggressive and flashy weapon that doesn't do a whole lot on its own but is incredibly effective at what it does do. Also you get a huge pet bug.

Light & Heavy Bowguns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kGgyfwObSg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaA4BynOTU8

Mostly unchanged from 3U, both Bowguns retain a similar focus on the playstyles seen in that game. Note that both of the features described can be swapped out for raw damage boosts instead, giving guns their own kind of risk/reward exchange.
Light Bowguns are more evade-oriented, focusing on firing rapidfire volleys of bullets without being hit. The main LBG feature being able to change out the rapid fire function for the ability to reload all of your ammo types at once.
Heavy Bowguns are cannon-esque, with a function that allows the user to kneel down and load in a huge number of chamber shots. Heavy Bowguns can be equipped with shields that allow them to tank hits from certain attacks without needing to try and dodge with the reduced movespeed.

Bow & Arrows
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mK2yl5o49cg

Bows are also mostly unchanged from 3U. Each bow has its own set of shot proficiencies, which will change the way you have to approach with this weapon (some variants are actually close-range focused) and the ability to fire off arrows by pointing straight at the sky like you're from 300.

Namely just some numbers tweaks. Sword mode lost about ~7-10% raw damage, a couple of axe attacks lost ~13% on their damage modifier, and the power phial was reduced to 1.20x from 1.25x

There's somethin' fishy goin' on here...
Bought the Wii U exclusively for 3 Ultimate and now I will be buying a 3DS. Any reason to go with anything but the XL to fill my MH needs?

No, and consider a New 3DS because it has better 3D and better graphics and doesn't need a huge unwieldy Circle Pad adaptor..

Edit: By better graphics I mean textures, sorry. There's a comparison neasr the end of the last thread.

The N3DS runs the demo buttery-smooth at a high framerate too, so if it's any indication of the final game that'll be good.

Please tell me more about this, friend.

You hit things in the head really hard, knock them out, and you laugh at all the other guys with you who thought they should stand near the head.

Thanks, I didn't even realize a new 3ds was coming out and almost bought an old on. Irritating when model names don't change.

That is one wonderful hammer that's a rocket powered drill on a stick. It has special animations where the rocket flares up for charge attacks. Including jump attacks.

Monster Hunter is a Good Game.

Monster Hunter is a great series, one of the best out there. There are few games as satisfying solo, and as enjoyable coop.

If you have not played Monster Hunter, you should remedy that, because it is awesome.

... and all that said, I'll be skipping MH4U because I loving hate hate hate playing MH games on handhelds :eng99:

I'll be cheering you guys on from the sidelines while I wait for a console release in another year or two :unsmith:

How much did they nerf the switch axe? I loved it in 3U.

It's way cooler than it used to be, they added a new combo from mashing X in sword mode that leads into a phial burst, and the regular up-down slash combo is now XAXA. Getting ESP on demand is very useful later on against apex monsters as well.

Heavy Bowguns for life. Also man I really liked swiming I mean I might be the only one but I liked engaging the beasties in full 3d. Also a bummer there's no WiiU version this time around.

Also who else grabbed the preorder on amazon for $30

I've never seriously gunned before but the demo sold me on HBG. It's so fun and took everything to pieces. :getin:

Just wait til you get shredder rounds they hit multiple times as they travel through the monsters :getin:

Aim it right and you can hit some beasties for 4 or 5 hits every shot.

Ive always enjoyed LBG, its fun to gun down flying monsters that try to escape and have them fall down, rapid fire kicks rear end.

Yeah, anyone else who was going to do it will pretty much assume you have it taken care of. Unless you do it, no one will get it done for months. Way to go!
