I think coffee snob coffee is overrated. the good stuff is smoother, but not that much better that I'm willing to shell out lots of money in gear just to get a slightly better cup.

the only expensive coffee things I bought were a burr grinder and an insulated French press. the insulated press makes a bigger difference and was the cheaper of the two.

the aeropress is p. great but doesn't cut it when you want multiple cups of coffee (to share, or just to be indulgent) and tbh works better for filtering plant matter out of yr weed butter than coffee when you transition to chemex for making multiple cups at once

*in retarded american voice* all you need to make your coffee taste good is an expensive machine, imported organic beans and a cup with a douchey phrase on. Me: I just add milk and sugar like a normal person.

doesn't oz and nz have their own fussy coffee culture? i think i remember hearing that espresso and lattes are really popular there and they have their own thing called flat white

source: my sister lived in oz for a year like 10 years ago so maybe the coffee culture died out since then

apparently it's so prevalent in oz/nz that starbucks et al. have a hard time getting a foothold because there's been a culture of greek/espresso cafes for the past 100 years. they're so fussy they don't care for starbucks at all which is really a point in their favor at the end of the day Kenny Logins fucked around with this message at 19:39 on May 4, 2015 |

there's probably a Starbucks at every corner there now, but when I went to Greece in the late 90s, there were only two kinds of coffee available: kafe elliniko, which is a shotsize cup that's half grounds and Nescafé. kafe elleniko is actually really good, you have to wait several minutes for the grounds to settle, and then you have a few sips of some really strong coffee. saying something along the lines of 'oh, it's like Turkish coffee then?' is pretty much asking for a fight.
