Why the gently caress can't Cortana control the OS at all? I'm on a Surface Pro 3 without a mouse and I find myself wanting to use voice control constantly. What I get instead are Bing searches for "run notepad" "bluetooth settings" and "type hello dot jpeg". I'm never going to use Cortana as a PDA, joke repository, and least of all a Bing search machine. I have no idea why OS control wasn't the first priority, even on 3% market share cell phone

Also the soft key numpad is telephone style and not numpad style. Whoever designed this UX was a loving idiot

Programmatic and os controls are supposedly coming to Cortana but aren't in place yet. If you ask the right command like "open word" youll get the title of the thread as a response. Everything else is a bing search which sucks for now.

Another improvement: the sticky keys hack has been patched in the pxe! In windows 10 pxe, all of the repair tools require account credentials to be run. No longer are the days of using the pxe for rampant access to a machine (unless you load up windows 8 recovery media via CD or USB in which case it works just like before).

I have been running the tech preview since the first day it opened. Remarkably, I have not had any issues with game compatibility. The only issue I had related to games was that my ASUS Xonar DG sound card drivers wouldn't install properly and I had issues with the card causing Fallout 3 and New Vegas to crash and loop audio until I rebooted. However, I downloaded custom drivers for the card and haven't had any issues since.

Can you link to said audio drivers? I have the same card, play New Vegas, and want to try the Technical Preview.

Voice recognition that can control the mouse and run programmes and other such stuff has been a basic part of Windows since Vista. Don't need Cortana for that poo poo. I guess not a lot of people knew about it. It even works passably.

Stop calling cortana a 'she' for fucks sake. I guess microsoft hit the nail on the head appealing to nerds that have no idea what a girl is. Having the voice recognition for windows 10 named after a teenage female character in their video game Halo is either genius or incredibly adolescent.

The best feature of Windows 10 is just having the new modern apps in a window for us desktop users. I don't think MS will actually improve any of the restore/recovery features which are horribly bad in 7 and 8/8.1 requiring you to having a working OS to fix stuff.

In Halo, Cortana was an AI modeled after a clone of a 60+ year old female doctor, not a teenager.

And the doctor was a genius, interesting, and a very strong character in the story. Not that it matters. It shouldn't bug anyone whether or not someone else decides to refer to an inanimate object/software as "he", "she", "it", "Computer", "Walrus", "Abe Lincoln", or whatever. Get over it.

ALSO, you will want to make sure that the DX enhancement is turned off in the Xonar DG audio center as this is the individual setting which Fallout and other Bethesda games don't like. If you have any more questions let me know, if I can help, I will.

Please note, these are custom drivers and while I use them and have no issues, I am not responsible if you don't like them or they cause issues.

What kind of an install footprint does W10 have at the moment? I have 7 installed on a 120 GB SSD, and it's taking up roughly half the drive between the OS and assorted users/documents directories.

It's tax time and Newegg's got SSDs on deep discount, so I'm trying to decide between a 240 GB or a 480, with an eye to upgrading the OS when W10 comes out.

From my experience, it takes about the same amount of space as windows 7-8.1. I kind of hope that they can finesse the size down a bit before the final release, but we shall see.

This is probably a retarded question: if I install the 10 tech preview, will it overwrite my 8.1 OS install, or do I need to allow extra room for my new OS? Asking this because my SSD that my OS is on is pretty much maxed out. I'm not sure what in the world I could transfer to my HDD that would help it :/

It sits well with another OS gives you a fancy multi-choice window on boot just put it on another drive/partition then your main install.

Is the preview's password field more responsive upon unlocking? About half the time I go to log in, it misses the first character I type because the lock screen is still sliding up.

Nope, it's just as (non-)responsive as 8.1 as of build 9926.

Which works fine on my desktop that has a number pad, but would kind of suck on my laptop. At least, it would take me a significant amount of time to get to where I could type my PIN on the number row as quickly as I can type my regular password.

"Please change the login screen. I want a fresh new login screen. Not the old Windows 8.1 login screen." Nothing more specific, just new.

Found it. Interestingly enough I just tried this and it's not related to crtl-al-del. It seems that the text box focus just doesn't set until the slide animation completes. I'll ask around internally and see if there is a bug or todo item on the backlog (more then likely there is already since the current lock screen is a work in progress like everything else).

The CAD bit is just because the machine has a domain login.

It was behaving properly in the last build, so I assume it's either a new bug or just this build uses an older version of the code than the last one did.

Unless you tell windows to install to a separate partition, I believe you can have it just overwrite the current install, it should tell you if there is not enough space for the install to complete.

Actually I think it's just new lock screen code? Lots of code is being reworked (for example the start menu is XAML.) I think the lock screen may be the same deal?
