 Q: Should I get a New3DSXL? A: YES! Welcome to the New (New) Nintendo 3DS (N3DS) thread for all manner and revision of 3 and 2 DSs. READ THIS FIRST  YES, YOU NEED TO DO A SYSTEM TRANSFER TO USE YOUR NINTENDO NETWORK ID ON A DIFFERENT 3DS (OR DSI) THAN YOU CURRENTLY HAVE, SO DONT loving ASK. Here is a youtube about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y88G3tp_f88 ALSO, if the backlight or brightness on your screen is going up and down, bright and dim like crazy, go to the home menu settings (top left on home menu, not the actual settings app) and turn off automatic screen brightness. That is the 3DS trying to compensate for what it sees as varying levels of light in the room.Nintendo Network ID (NNID) stuff related to the system transfer Your NNID is tied to the hardware and simply logging in with your NNID on the new system will not allow you access to your downloadable content. If you wipe your old 3DS (or it dies or something) you will have to call nintendo support to have them manually migrate your account. You will need to do a system transfer to go DSi->3ds, or 3ds->3dsXL or anything to New 3DS. You can only do one system transfer every 7 days. What is the Nintendo 3DS? The Nintendo 3DS is the successor to the wildly popular DS line of handheld gaming consoles. The 3DS continues the clamshell, two screen formfactor of the DS, but adds Autostereoscopy to give the user a glasses-less 3D viewing experience. The 3DS's main (and only) competitor is the Playstation Vita. There are officially 5 revisions of the 3DS model: Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, Nintendo 2DS (no 3D screens or clamshell), New Nintendo 3DS and New Nintendo 3DS XL. This thread will primarily deal with the 3DS models, as the 2DS models are compatible with all 3DS games and are shameful consoles that should never be spoken of. New Nintendo 3DS Stuff You heard right, there is a New Nintendo 3DS, and in the fine Nintendo naming tradition of "lets pick lovely confusing names for new hardware" (looking at you, Wii U), it is literally named the New Nintendo 3DS. Everywhere except for USA gets their choice of a non-XL New 3DS and an XL New 3DS, the US gets only the XL New 3DS because we are all fat people who have perfectly sized 3DS XL baskets on the front of our rascal scooters, or because Walmart sucks and bitches to Nintendo about multiple SKU's, believe whatever you want. The N3DSXL's do not have swappable faceplates, I know this angers everyone who looks at their 3DS more than they play it, I am sorry. The New Nintendo 3DS has a plethora of upgrades over the Old Nintendo 3DS:

OK, so you're sold on the 3DS, what about the games? Maybe you heard it had a lovely launch title lineup (it did), maybe you heard its all anime games (thats the Vita), either way, the 3DS has a solid library of awesome games, and anyone can find something they like. eShop The eShop is Nintendos online marketplace where you can download demos, virtual console games and full games. It has its problems (no shopping cart, no background downloads), but its Better Than Nothing™, which is really all you can hope for when it comes to Nintendo and the internet. The eShop ensures that you get to encounter the "Handheld Gamers Dillema: Carts or Digital". Look within your own heart for the answer to that one. Virtual Console Virtual Console games are games from older Nintendo systems either ported or emulated to run on modern hardware. This started with the Wii and continues to all modern Nintendo consoles. Nintendo really takes their time with these, and ensures that they are 100% accurately reproducing the experience of the original console. They are all very good ports. As always, metacritic can give you an idea of whats hot for the 3DS, as can the V's Recommended List, but I hope to get some decent goon reviews up for our favorites. Super Mario 3D Land A 3D platformer that winds up being a bit of a cross between Super Mario World for the SNES and Mario 64, so how could you go wrong, really? The game takes the level design of Super Mario World, and moves it into a 3D environment, a'la Mario 64. Universally praised and loved here at SA and by most any other site, SM3DL is a challenging platform game that both shows off and benefits from the 3D screen. The game sports two different 3D modes, one that makes the graphics pop out, and one that gives them more depth. Huge amounts of content, secrets, a ton of levels and gameplay (more than you think at first, trust me), this is a must have if you have ever enjoyed playing a Mario game. Not to be confused with New Super Mario Bros. 2, which is a 2D platformer with some 3D effects. Still a good game, especially if you are a fan of the NSMB series, but not the same game as 3D Land. Mario Golf: World Tour Ah Mario Golf... The ultimate super-chill golf game to get insanely crazy over and obsessed with. This one is near and dear to my heart, as I spent hundreds of hours with the N64 version. Mario Golf as you know and love it. An easily accessible golf game that is also VERY nuanced and challenging. Probably the best golf game out there on any platform. Mario Golf has a staggering amount of content, hundreds of hours of single player gameplay, an online multiplayer mode, DLC that nets you a bunch of complete 18 hole courses and challenges (some from the N64 version  ). Nintendo also runs regular online tournaments that you can enter to compete against others from around the world for prizes.If you are at all a fan of golf, golf video games of any kind, sports video games, or Mario Golf, GET THIS. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D LOZ:OOT needs no introduction. Its a legendary game, considered by many to be one of if not THE best game ever made. This is a port of the N64 version, with updated graphics, textures and of course, 3D. Considered by many (most?) to be THE DEFINITIVE version of OOT, the beautiful graphical upgrades, carefully designed 3D and quality of life improvements (better aiming, etc) make this the best version of an already amazing, classic game. I dont need to say much about the game, its the same core game as it was on the N64, with the addition of the Master Quest from the GameCube, you know what you're getting into here. If you like OOT, play this, you'll be blown away by how gorgeous it is, and it will truly live up to your rose colored memories of it (we all have them), if you've never played OOT, play this version, its the best one yet, and will give you the maximum amount of enjoyment and graphical fidelity without some of the annoyances of previous versions. Mario Kart 7 MARIO KART! Anyone reading this probably knows if they like Mario Kart or not, it has been on every Nintendo Console since the SNES (minus the Virtual Boy *sad trombone*). Mario Kart on the 3DS sees the full on 3D visuals treatment, online play that actually works, a long single player campaign, a bunch of unlockable karts and kart parts (over 1000 combinations of karts can be made to keep online play varied) and that core, fun Mario Kart gameplay we all know and love. Fire Emblem: Awakening A major goon favorite here, FE:A is a SRPG where you move characters across a grid map like a game of chess and follows the story of Chrom, a prince of Ylisse who recruited recently Robin, a mysterious tactician with no memories and also a fully customizable character to represent the player, into his army called the Shepherds to defend themselves against friction from a neighboring country and another group of zombie soldiers known as the Risen. This one is a treat for both new and old Fire Emblem fans, new ones can easily jump into this title as it is the most newcomer friendly of the series, even featuring a "casual mode" to turn off the series trademark permadeath where units are lost for good if they die on the battlefield. The gameplay is addictive, the game itself is highly replayable thanks to the support system and the ability to create multiple different pairings across your army, the CGi cutscenes are gorgeous, the OST is great, and it's all fast and slick thanks to the fast menus and the ability to speed up battle rather simply. Animal Crossing: New Leaf The newest addition to the Animal Crossing series, New Leaf is still the same old chill game with a few great additions. First off, you become Mayor of your town, with the adorable Isabelle as your assistant with the ability to issue town ordinances to make stores open earlier or stay open later or even being able to keep your flowers from wilting. There's also a nice QR system for distributing patterns, a secondhand shop, the return of the island similar to that of the GC one, and much more customization options added. Still cute, relaxing, and a nice game to play in small increments every day. We recommend to buy a digital copy of this game. Rune Factory 4 Pretty much the best Harvest Moon game on the DS/3DS. It's an action RPG and farming/crafting/life sim hybrid with tons of stuff to do. You play as either a prince or a princess who runs their own farm, crafting your own gear, building relationships, making boss monsters your pets, exploring dungeons and entering festivals. The amount of content packed into the game is simply awesome, and perhaps beaten by only a few games in that department as you can easily spend over a hundred hours beating all of the story arc and maxing out everything there is to do. The only reason I'd say to skip this is if the anime style turns you off. Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (n3DS only)  Not technically out as of this writing, but since it is a port of an already existing game I feel like its fair enough to make this recommendation. This is one of my all time favorite games and comes highly rated by other goons, it's an RPG that takes place on the top of two titan corpses, the Bionis and Mechonis, who have frozen in time after a long and hard battle. But life sprang up from their corpses and now their inhabitants are locked in an endless war with each other. Features stunning environments and a gigantic world to explore with hours upon hours of content and story. This is the first exclusive for the n3DS as old 3DS hardware simply would not be able to handle something that pushed the Wii to its limits. The port features 3D effects, an enemy collection, model viewer, music box, and compatibility with the Shulk Amiibo. However if you already own Xenoblade for the Wii feel free to skip it. But for the rest it's a good alternative to those who don't want to shell out for a Wii copy which is rare now and fetches over $70 online and must have for any RPG fan. If your interest is piqued, there is a thread on SA to discuss this game and the upcoming spiritual sequel for the WiiU Xenoblade Chronicles X. PilotWings Resort Did you love the PilotWings games on SNES and N64, did you wish the mini-PilotWings inside Wii sports resort was a real game? Then look no further than PilotWings resort, which has you flying around Wuhu Island in a plane, jetpack and glider. Excellent use of 3D, many challenges and collectables. Perhaps a bit shallow, but considering its a first-party game and you can pick it up for $4.99 at Gamestop, its well worth that amount of money. If you like pilotwings, or want a relaxing flying game, this is it. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Nintendo decided to make a sequel to A Link to the Past and ended up making (opinions may vary) the best Zelda game since A LInk to the Past, some would argue even better than ALttP and the best Zelda game ever. But whatever the case, if you like Zelda at all, this is one game you can't miss, especially not if you have fond memories of ALttP. It's pretty much a distilled verion of the Zelda formula, being probably the least linear game in the series since the first Legend of Zelda. Did I mention that the 3D is fantastic? Because the 3D is fantastic. Kid Icarus Uprising 21 years later a new Kid Icarus game was released and it was amazing. A third person action game split into air segments where you shoot enemies and land stages where you run around punching enemies, a complaint people might have about it is the controls, as you move with the circle pad and aim with the stylus. No, having a circle pad pro or New does not let you use dual stick aiming, the right stick does exactly the same thing the left one does. It's for left-handed people. The game came with a stand for the 3DS to rest on while playing, but no idea how available that is anymore. But if you can accept the controls, you can get to experience a fantastic action game with a lot of stuff to do, many weapons to craft, a ton of challenges to clear (same challenge panel system as in Smash Bros - Uprising is also one of Sakurai's brainchildren) and the best dialogue on the 3DS. The conversations between Pit, Palutena and various other good and bad guys are unforgettable. Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call If you like rhythm games, you might have played the Ouendan games and Elite Beat Agents for the DS. While there's no Ouendan 3D, there's this. And it has enough content to keep you occupied forever. Over 200 songs on the cart itself to start with, and another 80+ to be had through DLC (as of February 2015, and they keep releasing more). Three types of stages that while all are played through tapping or holding or swiping on the touchscreen (doesn't matter where) at the correct time still actually makes it feel like slightly different kind of gameplay. Cute chibi FF characters to level up and assign skills and kill monsters and get loot. A Quest mode exists, but if you don't want to bother with the RPG elements, you can mostly ignore that completely and just play songs. Nice work! But didn't Nintendo say that Xenoblade Chronicles will only work on the New 3DS? Your OP implies that it will work on the normal 3DS, just with enhanced features for the New, which I thought was not the case.

I took mine home and did the transfer, took it back to the store and they refunded my original purchase and then did another transaction to apply the discount for the trade-in. You have to bring back in both consoles. You will want to call ahead and make sure they will do this though, too much  for some employees. Got told no first until I asked them to check with a manager.

JIS#1 (Japanese Industrial Standards) also fits the screws perfectly on the New if you have a toolset with a poo poo ton of bits like the iFixit one.

Scalpers got me down and the price is only going up right now. I'm patient but gosh I wonder when the curve's gonna dip back down. Why does being an MM fan have to suck so much.

I tried the MH4 demo and it was fun but as predicted even with 3D off, I got a headache after half an hour that took some 20 minutes to go away. Way back when with the original Gameboy I had a screen magnifier attachment, I don't suppose they do those anymore for the 3DSXL do they? long shot, I know

Monster Hunter 4 does look really good for a 3DS game on the New 3DS, and it often runs at a pretty high framerate. I dunno if it's 60 FPS like some people say, though. I feel like those people have never played a PC game at 60+ FPS. I'd say at least 45 FPS at all times. 3D still chokes it up on occasion, though, even on a New 3DS. There was a lot of hubbub about the monsters having a higher polygon count on the New 3DS, but you really don't even notice it in motion, if it's true.
