Honeymoon is a recent addition, according to instant watcher. It's about a young couple on honeymoon at her childhood summer cottage. Things don't go exactly to plan, as she starts sleepwalking in the woods for some reason. Not amazing but creepy enough to warrant a watch, I think. Watched The One I Love based on thread recommendation. I will probably rewatch this movie (pretty rare for me), and delight in showing it to people for the first time. Not really spoilers but would have helped me before watching (still go in cold) there are no jump scares, you can calm down actual spoilers I did not think Jim from The Office could pull off serious. Also those last ~10 seconds, after she says "eggs and bacon", his ability to convey a person fully understanding the situation, and then accepting it, was really impressive. Recently I watched Frank and I'm not sure if it's been recommended or not. I do highly recommend it if you like more experimental music and movie-making that matches its oddities. Most of the actors are average, but it's clearly Michael Fassbender's movie, and he owns the part of the title character. It may have you welling up at the end if you have any sort of musical experience. If you don't, it's still an enjoyable ride that's a bit wacky throughout, but has a very heartfelt and slightly bittersweet ending.

Christ, I just watched "It's Such a Beautiful Day" due to this thread. I feel like I was just punched in the stomach. Then helped up off the floor. Then punched in the stomach again. It is a really good emotional roller coaster of a narrative. If you have not seen it yet, then you should. I strongly second the recommendation.

Like, snow on the ground and people are totally cool with it. For people who may not know, Eugene is a drizzly little town in a valley, which is really obvious if you look in any direction. This movie has a bizarro-Eugene that is covered in snow and is perfectly flat. It also has a huge river running right through campus. I have no idea why they decided they HAD to have the students be from the U of O, it affects the plot in no way at all except for when it makes you scratch your head. It would be like making a movie set at Harvard filmed in the midwest with all the characters mispronouncing Boston. It's weird to sperg about but I live across the street from the University and my buddy and I could not believe what we were watching. Luckily they leave the US rather quickly and stop saying Arrrgon. Also if you know anything about the Dyatlov Pass Incident (the basis for the horror part of the movie) and how there is actually no mystery at all about what really happened, them playing up this big ol' ~mystery~ is pretty drat funny. If I remember correctly the other band members were cast as musicians first and actors second, so their parts were deliberately fairly background. Which is totally okay, the film's not really about them and doesn't call for them to do much other than play, pose and scowl. I will warn anyone who goes in with expectations - the film is not about Frank Sidebottom and Chris Sievy, but uses the character of Frank to explore music and the notion of the tortured genius. Hopefully this should have been obvious from the start (Frank's head in the film is recognisably similar, but distinct from, Frank Sidebottom's) but I've seen some really angry reviews complaining that the film isn't a straightforward biopic and doesn't mention Timperley once.

Anyone with Hulu Plus, there's some good stuff Horror-wise on there: The Devil's Rejects, Night of the Living Dead '90, all 3 Ginger Snaps and Scanners movies, From Beyond, Cannibal Holocaust, Blair Witch 2, Candyman, The House on Sorority Row, House by the Cemetery,. The Beyond, Frankenhooker, Inferno, The Prowler, Let Sleeping Corpses Lie, Pieces, Intruder, Prince of Darkness, Slither, The Funhouse and a few more good ones.

True, the characters are less rangy than Scoot and Fassbender but that's kind of what the movie's about, these people under the sway of this magnetic, unstable person. At times it does read like a Portlandia sketch though.

I really liked that the movie (spoilers for the ending) didn't really downplay Frank's mental illness. He was *never* an untouchable genius, just a weirdo who surrounded himself with other weirdos, and the movie could have very easily fallen into the trap of being too twee but doesn't because it stays grounded to the fact that he's a weirdo and his music is strange and inaccessible. It makes the meeting of the parents scene less of a revelation and more of a gut-punch to the main character. Hey dummy, Frank's ill. It's not a gift.

It leans even more heavily on the inspiration the original film took from Loaded (which is a great New Zealand film that's on Netflix).

Blair Witch 2 reaches a Showgirls-level of utter insanity and has to be seen to be believed. I'd say pick it up on DVD because the commentary track that details the studio hell that the film went through is essential to the Blair Witch 2 experience.

A few criticisms of the movie I saw did mention that the ending was a bit of a bummer. I do kind of agree, but at the same time it fits the movie perfectly. Having a major crash as a band that is so avant garde in nature is something that I've actually witnessed for some of my friends playing in bands. The reunion at the end was also one of the most heartwarming things I've seen in a while. At the end they realize - like most musicians do - that they don't really need anyone but each other. For many it's not the fame and fortune that draws them to music, but the familial relationship that is developed. That's what made Don's death so tragic: he wasn't just some guy, but a brother to everyone in the band.
