If you want to avoid killing sentient creatures, it’s pretty important to be able to tell them apart from animals! This is usually pretty easy. Goblins are all sentient, tigers are all animals, etc, etc.

But mantises, well, some are psychic mantises gifted with extreme intellect. But they look like regular mantises. What to do?

I pinged Anthony Cook (who made the mantis for me), and we came up with a solution that fits the game vibe well: hats. Lore-wise, sentient mantises were created by a mad wizard. They’re pretty insecure about their place in the world. Giving them hats seemed to reinforce that idea: they’re using the trappings of other sentient races to validate their identities.

Reading Dev's blog is just as entertaining as playing the actual game :allears:

Game is soloable for the most part, groups are easy to find for other parts like dungeons. You have 2 different skill hotbars that you can put any combat skills on and switch them on the fly, i.e. cow psychology, cow is considered combat skill and an animal form.

Here's a skill compatibility chart

It is placeholder graphics and even a reason for world building due to said placeholder graphics, like how the only models of elves in Unity shop were elves in high heels in 2012 and that's how they're all sex addicts. There was a ton of posts about it on devs blog which he since disabled.

It's placeholder graphics combined with game for niche audience, and in my opinion it's fine once you get used to it because mechanics and depth far outweigh everything else.

If they don't for you and if 2 hours aren't up - just refund the game. It's undoubtedly ugly and wonky in oh-so-many aspects and that's not gonna get fixed anytime soon.

Strotski
Dec 29, 2013

I never took an offense, sorry if my post came off that way?
All graphics are store bought unity assets, with few exceptions when they hired contractors, I've no idea what part of the project said contractors worked on.

Custom art is easily the most expensive part of any project, and they are really focused on that gameplay and depth aspect, and as a result the game does look like rear end. Dungeons design is inexcusable in 2018, and many of the things are wrong.
It's just after 600 hours into it I find its placeholder nature all charming like "hey this is 6 years in the making or more by 2 people, this is charming and admirable". I guess I look at it at less of a game and more of a fascinating experience of what one can do with so many man hours and dedication.

As a tangent I found some moderately serious bugs, reported them, then got contacted by devs themselves, and not only they fixed the bugs that were affecting only me at the time, they were really cool about it too.

Game has far too many downsides if you are trying to get into it after hearing glowing praise, but it's like seeing a shoddy tiny trailer and you step inside and it's actually really well put together tiny house made by a family who really cares about it and the end product. You just have to overlook far too many things for it to hook you I guess.
Art will improve with time, but it's on a lower priority list compared to all other things, and it's a shame.

Edit: I guess it's worth mentioning that I enjoy how placeholder-y this game looks in an ironic way and often go out of my way to find stupidest looking assets they bought, and it affects my judgement about the game. You're right it will never make it big with graphics this bad or placeholdery and as a result most will overlook it (again, shame but what can you do).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1Wirrxg0vo

Gives me an excuse to post this, this is what I enjoy in this game, seeing babby's first animation someone made in unity and then it implemented in an mmo people actually play.

And to a lesser degree this, I enjoy schlock in my games.

Pop is around 250 avg and one would think it's a low number, but with only 7 zones in the game and some clever design (like how even high lvl crafting requires basic mats you get from lower zones) you pretty much go back and forth between the zones and see people everywhere.

That Guy Bob posted:

I think crafting xp in general needs a boost. I tried Shamanic Infusion, got it to around 10 and then my eyes gazed over at the amount of various creature asses I'd need to get it to 50. Shamanic Infusion is supposed to be the low end "newbie" skill vs Augmentation's high end stuff.
Shamanic Infusion may be intended as poor man's augmentation but this isn't what it's usually leveled for. Because it's really cheap but tiresome to level shamanic infusion via buying from "buy used" tab, people usually level it like that for lvl 50 + inv slot belt, last time I played that belt alone required just rat tails to craft, but went for around 10k on a player market.
So you have a situation where players like me are leveling it for cheap over a long period of time by buying all the things from buy used tab every time they're in town. And I think that's how you meant to level it, as opposed to just collecting bear asses.

Incidentally I have around 7 mules worth of materials and I don't play this game anymore, so if you ever need anything for basically almost any skill - PM me and I'll make an effort of logging in and giving it to you. On one hand I wanna say it's a really niche game that doesn't need that many players to support it, with vip perks and whales being a thing in other niche games (which they are planning to do). On the other - it had all the exposure it needed in the past 6 months and it's still dead, so obviously it lacks a lot even for a niche player.

All in all, I think it suffers too much from creativity and "vision" problem of main devs, it simultaneously what made this game great, and 8 years in development with just this to show. I've been to the casino, and it's a horrible mess of level design that made me feel claustrophobic and lost, and games just made me think on how valuable development time is.

And before that a dungeon for new players that everyone forgot about in a month. And before that god knows what.

So way back when dev used to have a blog where he would write things, and that was huge part of the charm about the game, it felt very indie. Blog is long gone so I had to dig up through wayback machine to find this delightful post, and how limitations give birth to creativity, or why everyone on Unity store is a sex crazed addict or something.

Dev posted:

[I didn't finish the blog post that was supposed to go up today, so here's some gripes about temporary art problems in the MMO I'm developing.]

A lot of the art in my game needs to be cheap prefabricated stuff. The monsters and animals and houses and so on are getting bought from websites like this one. The quality is usually very good, but no company has enough art to meet all my requirements, so there ends up being a bit of “art style clash” when using prefab art from multiple sources. I don’t like this, but I can’t really do anything about it. I’m trying to minimize it the best I can, and hope it isn’t too noticeable.

I do have a budget for custom 3D art, but it’s almost entirely allocated for the player characters. No prefab art seems even remotely usable for player characters. This is very frustrating. But I’m not buying custom art until after I get feedback from the first alpha version, so I know exactly what I need. In the mean time, I need a placeholder race!

The ideal player-character race meets these requirements:

  • Comes with lots of useful animations (like stabbing and sitting and picking up items)
  • Has both male and female models (and roughly identical animations for both)
  • Has different possible appearances (so I can code & optimize dynamically-streamed appearance skins)
  • Has detachable weapons and armor (so I can code all of that)
I never found anything that met all these requirements. The best I found were these male and female elf warriors . Here they are in my prototype character-generation screen:

Male alpha-version character
Male Hero

Female alpha-version character
Female hero

They meet all the requirements except one: they don’t have detachable armor. Their entire appearance is on one texture, so you pick the skin and clothes at the same time, and you can never change either. A pity.

However, the weapons are detachable. And they meet all my other requirements — I’ve found nothing else that meets more than two of the four requirements above. So apparently this is what I’m using for my alpha version! (Unless somebody can point me to something better…)

Yes: this means that players who help me pre-test the game will have to be an elf in tacky battle gear, 24/7. That wasn’t precisely the vibe I had in mind for my game. I didn’t even have elves in my game’s back story, actually.

But being an indie means rolling with the punches. And sure… okay, yeah, I can work with this. And maybe they’ll even be a permanent part of the game. If my custom artwork turns out to have a roughly similar style, maybe these elves will stay in the game as an NPC race.

It’s actually pretty fun to work around art limitations — they create barriers to work around. So my back story changed quite dramatically and now includes elves… all because of this temporary artwork.

Sexy Sexy Elves
So all is good, right? Aside from never being able to see any difference when you switch armor, this meets all the expectations of a playable race. They can have different heights, weights, genders, skin tones, different weapons. That’s more than adequate for now.

But I do dislike that every single PC and NPC lives their entire life in armor. And even worse, apparently nobody told the females how to actually dress for combat. They only put armor on their arms. We have to call this what it is: classic old-school video game sexism.

It bugs me a lot. (It bugs me in WoW too, for the record, but I’m not making WoW. I’m making this game, and I want it to not suck.) But I can’t fix it, so I used lampshade hanging. Then I decided that maybe they don’t need armor: they’re elves, so magical jewelry is what protects them. In that case, the males’ armor is really just ceremonial, and probably made of some super lightweight material. There, problem solved. At least for alpha.

I knew I’d have to deal with the oversexed elves before I even bought the models. But when I got them into the game, I noticed something else about the females:

high heels
Oh come on, high heels?

They’re all wearing high heels. Come on! That’s a step too far for me. I can’t imagine a woman sitting down to play my game, creating a female elf character, and then getting in and realizing that she has to live her entire virtual life in high heels. This is why we can’t have nice players.

Argh!

Okay, okay. Sigh. I can’t change the art, and I don’t have better art that meets my requirements, so I have to just deal for now.

But it’s distracting. I’m making a city for the elves to live in, and over time this ridiculous sexualization has seeped into its culture. Whenever I create a female shopkeeper or a quest giver or anybody else, they’re hypersexualized. I know I should have ignored their appearance, but when writing dialog for a woman in a slut suit, it’s really hard not to write them as being really kinky.

So I finally decided to run with it. I decided the elven race as a whole is just really sex-addled. They constantly talk about sex. They have inappropriate conversations about it everywhere. They obsess about it. That’s why they never stop being sexy, even when cooking, even when fighting, even when sleeping.

While it’s instantly clear that females are walking sex symbols, the males might be able to go about their lives without having to feel too oversexed. So I fixed that with NPC dialog. Turns out male elves all have very long penises. Two of them. Oh, you can’t see it in the model because their clothes are on, but everybody talks about it (and about how odd those humans are, with their one-penis anatomy). Tada!

Yes, that’s real content. I made it mostly out of frustration. I kind of doubt it will stay in the game, because of how conservative the US culture is about this sort of thing. Heh… but weirder things have happened.

I guess the point of this pointless post is that it’s actually very hard for indies to not be sexist in a gaming culture that assumes sexism is mandatory. I’ve seen dozens of female models for sale; the number of those with appropriate clothes on can be counted on one hand. This obligatory sexualisation of women is not easy to fight as an indie.

The other point is that if you know of any art that meets the above requirements, I would love to hear about it. Even if it’s just temporary art for the alpha. Please drop me a line.

I like PG precisely because of how dumb his ideas are, sure it comes with a lot of cons, like everything being paywalled behind layers of grind. But we got playable animals, and lots of memorable weird poo poo as a result.

It's like seeing alternative AAA mmo that is still in alpha stages being unshackled from chains of good management and someone with enough sense to say "no", with just horrible ideas executed left and right. It's the best. (Not to mention super refreshing for first timers)

What you're describing just made me quit faster, since I speedrun through my mmo cocaine cycle and become disillusioned relatively fast. And it just doesn't hold up in that treadmill cycle (unless you're turbo into crafting, then it's the best game that ever existed for you, right after SWG)

My main issue with it is also why I love it so much.
Too much stuff to do, so you try and do it all and you fail and you end up being a master of nothing, with your inventory so cluttered that every time you log in you have to ask yourself "what am I doing here what was the plan exactly"
Truly the allegory for ADHD.

It depends on the rarity, some still sell really well. The key was to sell absolutely immediately because everyone who had 50-300k to spare on one book also had an immediate itch, not so much anymore, due to the player amount that was filled rather quickly.

Animal books still sell well, I guess they drop more rare, but it also depends on the animal I discovered.
