Thank you all! I've gone through and updated the missing tracks as necessary. Everyone sounds fantastic! This is not false praise! I WANT TO PERFORM SEXUAL ACTS WITH ALL OF YOU!
Here is the collection that will be posted to GBS later today:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/o7p64ltehwptl6x/1-Minute_ADD.rar

I'll be organizing and posting to GBS this evening. Everyone, double-check your music on SoundCloud and make sure it's downloadable! I'll be updating this tomorrow.
I just came across the old collection of music this forum had put together, Music for People with ADD, and felt inspired. The rule had been a piece of music no longer than 30 seconds, and the submissions were nothing if not interesting.
I propose a new collaborative project along those same lines, but with expanding the time limit to one full minute. This can provide a multitude of possibilities and inspirations. It can make you start something that you'll think is fluff, only to have it strike up a real inspiration. Or, you can take a premise and beat it into the ground, get it out of the way, and feel motivated to work on something better. But, you'll likely find yourself catalyzed in any case.
Who's down?

The Rules Thus Far:

1. All pieces must be one minute (sixty seconds) in length. There will be +/- 3 second cushion.
2. Submission deadline is Sunday, March 29th, at 11:59pm for completely arbitrary reasons.
3. Style/genre is completely open.

I'll definitely submit something for this. Any theme, or just go nuts?

The precedent generally has been "go nuts", but I'm wondering if we'd want to set some kind of stylistic focus as a challenge. Thoughts?

Same tempo, same key. Then we can just turn it in to one song.

Please don't do that and let it be a free for all because it will otherwise be a plain old boring collab that's not going to work

gosh! i like both the islanders and the rangers!!! :^)

I will definitely be in on this. Between this, synthgoon albums, photo is your muse, and of course, mockstar, I love the music poo poo that SA puts out.

I'd rather go themeless for this. At least for now.

Exquisite corpse style wherein everyone hears the last few seconds of the piece before theirs might be kinda cool, but would take time planning and commitment, none of which are exactly goonly attributes.

I like this idea, I have a load of ambient compositions around 1 min, I'll dig out a good one some point this w/e.

and I like what Brian Eno had to say about composing very short music

quote:

The idea came up at the time when I was completely bereft of ideas. I'd been working on my own music for a while and was quite lost, actually. And I really appreciated someone coming along and saying, "Here's a specific problem — solve it."

The thing from the agency said, "We want a piece of music that is inspiring, universal, blah-blah, da-da-da, optimistic, futuristic, sentimental, emotional," this whole list of adjectives, and then at the bottom it said "and it must be 3.25 seconds long."

I thought this was so funny and an amazing thought to actually try to make a little piece of music. It's like making a tiny little jewel.

In fact, I made 84 pieces. I got completely into this world of tiny, tiny little pieces of music. I was so sensitive to microseconds at the end of this that it really broke a logjam in my own work. Then when I'd finished that and I went back to working with pieces that were like three minutes long, it seemed like oceans of time.

Didn't happen tonight. In keeping with the spirit of ADD I kept flicking between ideas and didn't stick with one until I'd already been at it for a couple of hours and worn my ears out.

Consensus seems to be independent of theme, as is precedent. So be it.
Next question, do we post this collection to GBS as before, or keep it here?

I think I'm in. If all goes well tonight I'll record some guitar punk style and get some yelly vocals tomorrow at my mate's. Now to come up with a random 60 second riff. I don't want to re-use anything (And I'm sure it's against the rules) but should be fun.

Did an instrumental bit on the modular tonight - this is the work in progress, since I've got the stems and will probably mix it a bit better.

Let's say +/- 3 seconds to keep it tight and challenging for the editing skills.

The main melody is great, I think the kinda cheesy bass line lets it down a bit! Go more epic imo.

And this is just awesome.

I'm working on this piece: https://soundcloud.com/fieldbalm/1mdirt-work-in-progress

I started out planning on doing a steve reich inspired bit with just some tribal drums. I spent ages modelling some realistic sounding stuff, but decided to distort the hell out of it all anyway. I used rp-distort and coldfire distbit (an old free plugin i've been getting into the last few weeks, I think its a bit of a well kept secret for a lot of techno producers). I'm not really happy with the little final fantasy-esque choir bit in the middle, so I'll probably change that.

Mastering: anyone doing it, or just do it ourselves? On an ADD themed comp I can't see disparate mastering styles mattering much.

Here it is. This is based on an old track that I could never finish. I just always loved the melodies and the vocal sample, which are all I've got time to develop in this version. The vocal seems to fit the theme as well, which is a bonus.

It's sort of where Jungle meets 80's cheese sci-fi, all done on a laptop during nightshifts at work, got a somewhat dreamy feel to it.
Will hopefully have another track by the end of the month which will be totally different.

Enjoy!

Wanted to get it done in a night. Doing the bassline ended up taking all week (gently caress work). Meat is a littlebits synthesizer being fed through the audio ins on an ER-1 and an ER-1 making drum noises. Bass tracks are courtesy of my other current synth sweetheart, the Casio CZ app. Extra noise is provided by Soundscraper which is, basically a circuit bent lo-fi sampler for iOS and which is also pretty awesome.
