OMG! They're so cute!! Can I get one as a pet??

Probably not! Unless you want an animal that has peculiar temperature and dietary needs, requires lots of space, and probably can't be house trained. I've heard of them being kept as pets in Nepal but that's their native range so it's probably a different story there.

That reminds me of something:

It would appear that they're either trying to send the message that red pandas have no business being pets, or trying to turn them into the next exotic pet craze.

Happily I live in a city that has bookable red panda close encounters. This thread has inspired me to revisit this activity.

I wonder if we should start a list of zoos offering this sort of thing. I've found a number of them:

Utica Zoo - Utica, NY: (they also offer a lion encounter if you have $1000 and balls large enough to count as light trucks

Ross Park Zoo - Binghamton, NY: (they say "currently unavailable" but don't elaborate on what's going on)

Good Zoo - Wheeling, WV:

Pittsburgh Zoo - Pittsburgh, PA: (they charge way more than the others at $350)

It'd be like owning a large ferret w/ special dietary needs, some alternative to fresh bamboo would be needed. Also I think they'd probably need a large outdoor enclosure to keep them safe when unattended. Dunno if they'd ever be trainable like dogs.

As far as exotic mammals go, that actually doesn't sound that bad. It sounds like they'd be roughly on the level of a wallaby or coatimundi - responsibility well above most domestic animals, but quite feasible for a serious animal lover.

Now that I think about it, I'm kind of surprised there's never been any serious push go get red pandas into the pet trade. I mean, we were fully aware of their existence back when mail-order monkeys and alligators were being sold out of comic books.

It looks like the red panda encounter at the Chattanooga Zoo is back on:

The only problem is that Chattanooga is nowhere near anything else of interest to me. At least it's closer than New Zealand.

When I first saw that, my first thought was "my grandmother's cat is worse than that".

Some red pandas seem to like pets, but only kind of.

Well, not enough people have tried fully socializing them to get any clear data there. This sounds like something which demands extensive research - research I'd happily volunteer to be a part of.
