It very much felt part of the same cinematic tradition as THX-1138, Logan's Run, Barbarella, etc. It's arguably stranger than those other films but not that much stranger. I think it's that there's less dialogue and feels a tad more serious than Logan's Run and Barbarella, even though the ideas are just as absurd. Barbarella is a comedy first, whereas Zardoz feels closer to Lynch's Dune.
