The best uniform fuckery is Navy guys in ACUs. I saw so so many Army O5s and below crispy saluting PO3s when I was in Iraq. When I was in Djibouti some of my guys were complaining about a similar situation as Lingcod and I told them they were under no obligation to try and figure out if they needed to salute someone in a deliberately obscured uniform (little different scenario since they were talking about Marine aviators specifically) and that if any of those officers had a problem with that that they were welcome to come talk it over with me. No one ever took me up on my invitation. :smith:

Just do what they say and you'll be fine. The only real trick I can think of is to just hold your position for a few seconds longer then they tell you to in order to help reduce the chance of getting kicked in the face. Because there is always that one guy who kicks his feet even though he's told not to.

Trigger Warning, LCS talk

Classmate of mine from Academy days is the XO of an LCS and I got to go onboard today. Have to say, it was pretty loving awesome. He tells me O6 SWO types that come aboard can't seem to process the fact of things like people sitting down on watch, etc. Really cool to see up close and personal. Seems to be a really good deal for enlisted sailors. They have any opportunity to get quals they could never dream of getting on more traditional Navy ships and my buddy's direct quote to me was "We're only as formal as we need to be." The manning is so lean that pretty much everyone does everything. Its pretty amazing that the Navy was willing to try so many radical departures from surface SOP for this ship.

Nothing is ever a good deal for enlisted sailors. Especially

That usually means that they're cleaning, painting, and doing any other menial bullshit :chiefsay: comes up with on their off time between p/s watches.

Everyone cleans (including the CO and XO), there is no exterior painting (aluminum hull and all that), and very little maintenance is actually performed by the crew. I forget the exact number but a very high percentage of the crew is "gainfully" employed when they are underway. I get the cynicism but the concept of how this ship operates is pretty apples and oranges different from your standard Navy ship.

Just because you have a chair doesn't you have to sit in it all the time. Vis from the seats is pretty good though. The watchstations are pretty close and everyone is on headsets.

I mean, generally we find places to sit or lean back on for a bit, but I can't imagine being alert on a mid or rev watch with a chair. If I was a CO I'd be loving terrified of my bridge team being seated on those watches in tight maneuvering environments. Besides, you'd be surprised at what you miss when you're not up and about. You'd probably be surprised at how much poo poo you catch last minute before making a turn, simply by walking out to the bridge wing and double checking.

LCS is a little different though, it does have a wide view and no bridge wing, is smaller and more maneuverable than even DDGs and CGs.

Btw, asking why was because I really don't know. Makes sense though for typical ship. But the LCS is insanely maneuverable as you said. It can turn inside is own radius and can walk itself sideways, can stop itself in about 1.5 lengths of the ship, etc. My buddy told me there is video of the LCS doing crazy maneuvers during sea trials (uploaded by Austal). Also interesting is the fact that they use autopilot a lot underway. If they wanted to they could autopilot all the way out to open water but they aren't quite that comfortable with it yet (although they are getting there).

On the ship it probably makes sense for the trash collection to be done by the supply guys. As for laundry honestly most guys I know just do their own. It still may make more sense to have it done that way but I'm pretty sure on some ships only the high ranking Os get theirs picked up so it probably works ok to have to take it down yourself. All this is from a perspective of someone who has only ever deployed on carriers.

The online response by senior (meaning mostly terminal O4s and O5s) has been "How dare she complain and criticize without recommending solutions! Priviliged millennial!" Which speaks volumes for itself. The fact that the institution doesn't tolerate any criticism or legitimate complaint basically dooms itself to continue to make the same mistakes over and over again.

Honestly I thought that her essay was pretty terrible, and not for the reason that you mentioned. There is a point to the "criticism without solution" thing but I agree that it is sometimes taken too far.
