I'm trying to help a friend set up backups for their mac, and I'm hoping someone here knows more about how time machine interacts with usb drives than I do. I need to be backing up both the laptop itself and their portable drive to another external drive. I'd want it to run about once a night, but it wouldn't always have the portable drive plugged in. Would that confuse time machine? For that matter, I'm used to thinking of time machine as something that does constant / nearly constant backup, so how would it interact with backing up to a drive that's only plugged in once a night?
