Hard to say. Failure rate of actively used hard drives tends to increase after three to four years, but since backup drives generally aren't being read from and written to several hours per day seven days a week, you *could* get away with longer, but I wouldn't. I've heard 10% of drives fail in their third year, but that could be apocryphal.
