Another edge case I've been seeing more lately is where devs include items that cost a poo poo ton of in-game money (or worse, real money) which you figure will give some sort of benefit, but are purely cosmetic. Don't know if that's trolling or lovely game design.

From early in the thread, but I came across a great example of this the other day:

In the mobile game Puzzle Forge II, the contents of the shop change from day to day. A piece of iron ore might normally cost 60-80 gold, all the way up to Netherium ore (which takes 81 pieces of iron to make) costing 6000 gold. Every now and then they put a piece of copper ore (worse than iron) up for sale for several thousand. I've read posts from people who bought it and complained that it was just a piece of copper. "I thought it was special, why else would it cost so much?!?"

Honestly the Driver tutorial level wasn't too bad, to begin with. Do some turns, do some slalom without hitting the columns, reverse at speed, ok, fine, do a J-turn, haha gently caress you just kidding that's almost physically impossible in this tiny space without hitting anything.

The second sentence there is absolutely on point though, I fired up my old PS a few months ago because I wanted desperately to re-create the experience I had when I first played Metal Gear Solid. It's still a good game, but trying to play it on a 1080p television is painfully jaggy.

Another troll from a video game back in the day: if you finished Ultima Underworld with any of your skills over 30, a thing that was possible to do legitimately within the mechanics of the game, it assumed you edited your save file and instead of giving you the proper ending, it said something like "You finished Ultima Underworld in 7 hours, 52 minutes, and cheated on your character!"

In the last year they have given away, completely for free, Plants vs Zombies GOTY edition, Wing Commander 3, Peggle and Bejeweled 3. Like, Origin is still complete garbage and you won't hear any arguments from me about that, but EA are doing some things right with it, like having a 24-hour cooling off period for purchases, that seem complete anathema to Steam.

A similar thing happened in Borderlands - there's an early area in the game that playtesters complained had too many bad guys in it, I think it was skags. They responded by increasing the number of skags. Later playtesters said the area flowed a lot better. I guess when you're killing things, you don't notice their numbers, and when you're going between encounters, you want a bit more of a break.

Yeah that's not trolling, it's a straight-up scam. The dev said "Oh poo poo sorry I messed up trying to update it and corrupted some of the level files", then he mysteriously got sick and went radio silent, deleting his twitter account and setting his steam profile to private.

Valve activated automatic refunds for anyone who bought the game, no matter how long they've owned it or how long their played time is, and it's no longer for sale on the store.

The funny thing is, if the developer had just marked the game as "Early Access", it would never have been given a second look by Valve and everyone would be out of their money if they didn't get in early enough with a refund request. In fact, that's what the dev did with their other game, Voxelised. I guess he thought he was on to a good thing with this.

Their response and their justification will be "this game hasn't been a free form RPG for 17 years and no matter what we do, you grognards are still going to complain and we're still going to sell fifty ho-jillion copies"

The days of publishers letting this sort of game come out without focus-grouping it to death and making sure it has the biggest mass appeal as possible are long gone. In this case, it means having a solid story and locking you into it to a greater degree than previously.

I personally don't see it as a problem and certainly not as a troll. I played both of the original games basically the day they came out, until I had wrung out every ounce of enjoyment they had to offer. I'll play this one in a few months and a few bug patches' time (but apparently it's not as bad as past releases for this) but I know I'm not getting a "real" Fallout experience in 2015 no matter how much I wanted one.

For a second that reminded me of Journey of the Light.
  • Game released claiming it "might be one of the Hardest games on Steam"
  • No one manages to finish the first level out of 8 advertised levels
  • People notice funny things about the puzzles; you're supposed to be able to get two lamps to light up to go on to the next part but when you light one, the other goes off
  • People notice the only person with achievements for finishing the game is the developer
  • Someone digs into the files and realises that levels 2-8 are exactly the same code as level 1

The developer doubled down pretty hard on "no no you guys just haven't figured the puzzles out yet, keep going, you'll do it!" and then when a bunch of screenshot evidence was released, he switched tacks and gave it a bit of "Oh poo poo I tooootally uploaded the wrong build, lol, my bad guys, I'll get onto patching that up right now!". I think since then the dev has basically just back-tracked as hard as they can and issued refunds to everyone who wants one, and now their twitter profile reads "One-Man-Team Steam Scammer. Creator of Very Scammy Minecraft Ripoff & Ripoff Of The Light. Love Scamming Indie Games. Check my Steam Profile for more scams." Bitter about being caught out, I assume.

For those who don't get it: Dead Rising is a game about surviving and rescuing survivors in a mall full of zombies. The mall is shaped like a circle with a courtyard/park area in the middle. The game progresses on a time limit over 3 days and survivors will only be available for rescue at fixed time, so you've gotta be fast and usually the fastest way is to cut through the courtyard.

... except in addition to the survivors being available at fixed times, there will also be psychopaths (bosses) in certain parts of the mall at different times. Starting sometime late in the first day 3 escaped convicts in a humvee with a machine gun start roaming the courtyard, and that's their theme. So, okay, whatever, you kill them when you have a spare moment and it's fine, right?

... except for whatever godforsaken reason the convicts are the only psychopaths that respawn, so sometimes you'll be short on time trying to get a group of survivors back to the safehouse so you can make another run in a different part of the mall and you hear the opening chords of the song and WELL HE AIN'T MY BOY BUT THE BROTHER IS HEAVY immediately before 3 idiots in a humvee run over the group you're escorting.

The line between trolling and just-plain-lovely game design is blurred at times.

I remembered one. In Ultima Underworld II, in the ice level, there was a tiny room with a locked door. In that room, there was one of the best weapons in the game - a broadsword that did a ton of extra poison damage with each swing. Lots of enemies were susceptible to poison in that game. The weapon appeared to be in an advanced state of disrepair, "Very Badly Worn" when you pick it up. It was actually a single swing away from breaking. You could repair a worn weapon in that game, but once it broke, it was junk. I definitely remember friends who had the game complaining that they tried out the sword once and smashed it, intending to repair it once they reached a settlement. I did even worse - I picked it up, inspected it, then dropped it while I made room in my inventory for it. This also caused it to break.

e. relevant because its the sort of compromise that just made the internet explode that much more because its kind of insulting to both sides.

The Age of Conan MMO had a slower swing speed for female characters, by 25%. I think it was actually a scaling issue to do with having a smaller character model, but regardless of the intention, it made female characters significantly weaker than males.

This was nearly eight years ago, so I can only imagine the utter shitstorm that would have been unleashed if it had happened today.

If they give literally no advantage over other players and only prevent actual cheaters from griefing my game? Yeah, I'd say that's ok by any reasonable standards. I would, in fact, gladly play any and all multiplayer games where literally every person was using a third party mod of this nature without any complaint.

Not something I'd deny at this point, but I'd say it's what would be referred to as 'an honest mistake', considering DSFix didn't cause any problems and I play heaps of modded games. I don't play many multiplayer games, but the few I do play do not ban player accounts for using mods. The creator of DS2Fix (after reports started coming out that it might be causing bans) also wrote a big scree of text about why it couldn't possibly be getting people banned - it was only after this fact, and a lot of digging on my part, that I actually got official confirmation from Namco Bandai that DS2Fix DOES in fact get people banned, meaning that scree of text is obviously incorrect.

I removed the mod months ago. I started a new character too and deleted my old one. Literally no harm was done to anyone, so by any reasonable stretch of the imagination it shouldn't be a big ask for me to want my softban removed - heck, I'd happily submit to them re-testing my account every time I play if they're that worried about it.

Too bad that there's no review or appeals process!

Bolded part: that costs them money, and they already got all the money out of you they're going to, so why would they spend money to get no more money out of you.

The answer to everyone's complaints about companies that treat their customers like poo poo is to stop giving those companies money. It's like I heard a lot of talk this week about some JRPG that was ported over to the PC, worked like poo poo, and then some independent dude wrote a fix for it and made it work. The cry of "They should hire this guy!!!!!11!!!shift+1" was heard all over the internet, with the refrain from anyone who understands anything about commerce being "he's already doing their job for them, for free, why the gently caress would they pay him for something they can get for nothing?"

The elevator in Serpentshrine Cavern in World of Warcraft was a good one. They made it so tall that a paladin's 6-second immunity would wear off before they hit the bottom if they used it straight away. Deliberately, I'm pretty sure, but with Wowinsider going the way of the dodo it's hard to find the story I'm thinking of for reference.
