I just had some guy in a cruiser jet ahead and leave me behind to the tender mercies of 2 destroyers, a cruiser and a BB. I survived, barely, and then found him and took my frustration out on him in a crushing point blank broadside.

American cruisers are really sweet gun boats that can dance a bit and hammer out some real damage without requiring driving based on where you have to be thirty seconds in the future. They're my faves, especially the Cleveland and the Pensacola for totally different reasons. The Cleveland can hammer out salvoes like it's a huge destroyer but they really sting, and the Pensacola can lay hammer blows into the unsuspecting.

Battleships are pretty fun. I couldn't hit anything at first, and I was out of position because I was playing way too conservatively. Then half my team died, and the enemy got a significant number advantage on us, which solved my problem of not having enough enemies to shoot at.

It was very frustrating to watch the water going ploosh ploosh ploosh around the enemy ships every time I missed, but holy poo poo, when you hit a destroyer with those guns it explodes like the fourth of July. :911:

When the enemy ships were getting awfully close, I still had enough armor to soak up a number of shells and a handful of torpedoes. At that range, in that caliber, even if I missed I couldn't miss. Closing with a battleship without a smoke screen is an awful idea, unless they're terrible.

This game is a lot more fun than it should be, for something so simple.

Which boats are the most fun early on that will give me a good flavor for the different playstyles?

When do I shoot HE or AP?

I've played maybe 10 games so far and what I've seen is pretty encouraging. If only arty in tanks was this fun.

The only time I shoot he is at destroyers. Because there is nothing more fun then getting a full pen citadel hit with he. Or maybe it was an ammorack. Either way, made me really smile.

I dunno on different play styles, but get a st louis. Then laugh at all those without one. It brings something like 6 or 8 152mm guns to bear on a broadside. I've danced battleships to death in the past with it just because of the rate of fire and gun count combine to beat out their alpha strike and health advantage.

Edit: it also makes a good bit of money for me.

I also love the matches like the one that is just finishing up where one of our battleships decided the best course of action was to drive headlong into the enemy. Yes you are highly armored relative to the other ships in tier, but the enemy ships of the same tier and even a tier below do have enough punch to still penetrate said armor unlike a properly angled maus.

The problem with battleships is that you can make a mistake and not notice until five minutes later, when it will take another five minutes to fix. If your battleline forms up left behind you but then decides to run right because the mind of the pubbie is a fickle thing, you can find yourself all alone all of a sudden, usually right in the moment two cruisers and a battleship come out behind an island.

That and there are battleship captains who seem to believe they are billed for any scratched paint on their ship and decide to stay as far away from the enemy as possible. If you're not engaging the enemy as a battleship or are currently maneuvering to engage the enemy, you are not doing your job. Sometimes that means you find yourself surrounded and go down in a blaze of glorious glory.

Shooting down other planes is often pretty important - carriers have limited supply and once they're gone, that's all, which is why your chosen plane load out and tactics are a lot more important than just loading torp bombers, putting them in the air and firing and forgetting at a random ship over there.

I get the feeling torpedoes are going to be the arty of WoWs. If they are not good enough, pubbies will suck with them and cry until they are buffed. If they are good enough for pubbies to do ok with them, then skilled players are going to be utterly overpowered with them. Of course, the difference is that in WoT arty is only a small minority in every game - in WoWs, torpedoes are THE defining weapon for half of the ship classes :shobon: They better get this right.

I wish I had recorded it, but I was in the cleveland, up close to both enemy carriers while dueling a battleship. There were so many tracers going off, the game dropped a good 15 FPS. Pubbie carriers managed to TK their BB while trying to drop torps on me, mopped up the carriers, and shot down 45 planes.

Someone made some sort of shooting guide in the alpha or beta weekend forum that said not to move to get max accuracy. So...every idiot in a battleship sits at extreme range totally motionless and plinks away at the other team.

I got caught in one of those actually, in a battleship no less. I haven't seen anybody do it to me since so who knows, you might've been the one to do it to me. I can confirm that torpedo crosses work really really well, and there really isn't any solution, outside of 'eat poo poo and die'.

As long as you can time the attacks properly, there is pretty much no way to escape that. Even if you fail to kill the ship outright you'll cripple it for sure and it'll likely get picked off in short order.

I love them especially when they do it wrong so I can shoot over the island and right into their decks. Other times I rage at the terrain getting in front of my shots.

As for RPM being king, I one-shot some poor cruiser in my TIV battleship. Completely unintentional, just lined up the shot. Next thing I know there's a '40320' number in the air and the dude tells me 'their cruiser is foundering!'

Of course I spent the next three minutes of that match chasing the enemies CV's while they ran away and picked off my Cruiser escorts with torp bombers. Ended up winning via base cap.

Seemed fairly effective if you stop in the right place so you can fire all your front guns, are relatively concealed from return fire, and can't be hit by torpedoes from the angle you're looking.

Might depend on ship though: I failed spectacularly twice with my Phoenix before realizing movement is life once you actually have the ability to move and turn (the St. Louis doesn't and was what was working for peeking around an island).

Crashing into the edge of the map being an invisible wall is also hilarious: had two enemies in a big engagement do this, both were quickly smitten by rounds and torps as they came to a dead stop in vision of like six ships.

The best a well driven and fast battleship can do, if she reacts before the torps hit the water, is comb one set, which forces her to eat the other. Destroyers can handily dodge both sets and keep on stepping if they're remotely observant. Not really tried it in Cruisers, but I imagine it's going to be halfway in between based on ship agility and your own vigilance and reaction times.

Right, that happens. But if you're firing 12 shells every 10 seconds(or in the Des Moines case, 9 shells every 6), your chance of scoring a hit(and thus a crit/citadel) increases enormously. Even if you don't get many citadel hits, you're still putting out so much damage that its hard for a other ships to keep up.*

Torpedoes don't seem to be nearly as problematic, balance-wise, at higher tiers. For destroyers it's always risky for them to use them, and they only get more risky as they go up in tiers, but the reward can be good. Compared to BB guns, torpedoes are much riskier but provide higher and more consistent damage with flooding when they're used well. BB guns can do way more damage but there's considerably more RNG (or circumstances that are difficult to control) involved even when you hit.

The real problem, I feel, is low tier torpedo bombers before there's adequate AA. I say torpedoes do high damage at higher tiers, but in t3-5 or so they do even more damage in absolute numbers (and much more as a percentage of their targets health) because the ships (Japanese BBs in particular) have less armour.

Going from the Kongou to the Fuso makes a massive difference, cutting torp damage in half (and having more base health) while having good AA. In the Kongou or lower one torp bomber you didn't see until too late (or two boxing you in) basically ends the game for you. The Fuso and higher can weather a few waves of torpedoes and shoot down planes in return.

Agree that for cruisers RPM is king. My fully modded St. Louis won a broadside battle with an un-modded one because 8 guns are greater than 6.
