I finally got into this game. I tried to get into the closed beta but it never seemed to happen. World of Warships is a lot of fun, but like others have said very different from World of Tanks. Right now it is very hard not to resist the urge to do suicide torpedo runs with my Clemson. Once people told me, "If you target an enemy ship while your torpedoes are armed, you get a 'lead' indicator" I've sank so many ships with torpedoes. I think the first BB I sank was like the second time I ever used Destroyers, which was pretty exciting. But I do have some questions: -What exactly does upgrading Fire Control do? Just boost your maximum range a bit? Its hard to notice a difference. -People explained the difference between using HE and AP, but so far every time I use AP it does almost no damage to ships. And its not 'over penetrating' most of this time; it indicates I've scored hits, but just no damage. So far I haven't gotten any of those impressive citadel hits people mentioned. -How is the grind compared to World of Tanks? So far I have a St. Louis and a Clemson. I also had pre-ordered a month of premium through amazon which I didn't remember doing, so I know I'm at least getting bonus money/exp. But since I just started playing yesterday I haven't gotten any of those insanely good 1,000+ exp games; I can sink a ship or two and compared to WoT I actually survive far more battles in this game. But even at tier 3 its looking like a long grind. -How much fun are carriers? I used to play Navyfield for years and LOVED playing Carriers, it was like playing a completely different game. Is Carrier play in Warships similar to how it was in Navyfield?

How are people getting these insane amounts of xp? I sink 3 other cruisers in my St. Louis, we win, yet I'm only getting about 350xp.

Any tips for a new BB driver? Going from Cruisers to BBs is more painful than I thought. The longer reload times make any misses really punishing.

Also, how much exp do you get for doing XYZ actions? Is there a chart somewhere that says the formula for calculating how much you get for sinking ships of various types, and causing different kinds of crits or shooting down planes?

Gort posted:Destroyers are definitely the swingiest ship type. Either you get vapourised the moment you appear, or you sneak up on two battleships and annihilate them. They are a lot of fun. I've hit cruisers/battleships at what must be the maximum of the crappy American torpedo range, and even though it felt like it took them 45 seconds to get there at no point did the other ships appear to change course. Kind of hoping there is a kind of XVM mod that gets released which shows plane and torpedo detection bubbles.

Playing the South Carolina and it is extremely tedious. Just want to hurry up and get the Wyoming or whatever and get that Langley so I can See Vee it up.

Can you customize your loadouts with carriers, or are you restricted to a specific combination of fighters and bombers?

Maybe there should be game modes that either ban them or emphasize them. That way you don't have to deal with them if you don't want to, but if you have a fighter centric carrier you will always have targets to shoot down.

I think if they made the secondaries on BBs more accurate, it would help solve some of their problems. Getting close with a cruiser or destroyer would be a lot more dangerous if a BB had the archival equivalent of a St. Louis.

NTRabbit posted:They can't do it universally though, because the secondaries on the Nagato are already vicious enough to reduce a destroyer from 100 to 0 in a single attempted torpedo run Maybe have it scale based on tier, commander abilities and weapon upgrades so you really have to dedicate time and effort. They need to also make shooting down planes more worthwhile via bonus xp, money, or flags. Taking fighters sounds like a gamble, and cruisers need to be in the right place at the right time. Bombers are always going to have a lot of initiative with their mobility. Giving people an incentive to knock them out of the sky will help keep Carriers balanced.

That's interesting. What about if you could manually aim them? Would that be imbalanced? It would certainly make BBs more interesting and exciting to play.

Finally got the Langley late last night. Only had a few chances to use it before bed. How do you manually drop torpedoes? Doing the automatic method feels wonky, sometimes they set up for a run and don't even drop them at all. And while being the only carrier in the match sounds nice, my fighter squadron is completely useless aside from scouting and I'm left with a single squadron of torpedo bombers to slowly go back and forth. I see what people mean about how tedious it is.

How does AA work vs planes? Is it like a damage over time effect against planes in range? Does concentrating on one squad do more damage to it as well?

US carriers have bigger squadrons than Japanese ones, right? In dogfights does this play a factor? What bombers have rear guns? When is it worth it to take that tier 1 skill that boosts your bombers' defensive fire?

Holy poo poo, finally got to try out manual torping with bombers and its a whole different ballgame. Now it is much easier to hit enemy ships, and take advantage of terrain and minimum arming ranges. Also managed to kill a battleship with flooding alone. I had no idea flooding did so much damage; I got that 'Liquidator' award, which means he must have had repair on cooldown.

22 Eargesplitten posted:So does it just billow out enough to largely cover the ship? Pretty sure it does. When you see enemy destroyers pop smoke, there's a smoke trail on/behind them, and their icon will keep popping in and out of your screen, making them difficult to target. Of course it is smart to double back behind the smokescreen too, particularly to launch torpedoes.

I'm seeing the different loadouts on the US CVs, and it looks like it is a combination of -Mixed group of 3 types -'Strike' configuration of TBs and DBs -'Fighter' configuration with a DB squadron thrown in. The problem I forsee is: How do you know you are going to be up against a bunch of enemy carriers? If you knew for sure, then taking fighter-heavy loadout would make sense. But since it is pretty random, and so far I haven't seen more than 2 carriers on either side, this seems like a risky commitment. Doubly frustrating for the US is that the fighter centric loadouts come at a cost of torpedo bombers in general. At least with the 'strike' config you get a mix of both. Perhaps if they really boost the XP/money gain to shooting down planes having an air superiority carrier will be worth it...

Stevefin posted:Not as much as torping, If you get two torp hits, you will get more XP than a carrier who shoots down 50 planes I really hope they change this. Making it profitable xp wise to shoot down planes would mean the fighter heavy configurations of carriers would be worth taking. Right now you're better off doing more damage. How effective are dive bombers? I heard people say they are only good for starting fires.

While this game is a lot of fun and I am enjoying my Langley, it makes me miss how carriers in Navyfield worked: -Customized plane compositions, whatever combination of fighters, dive bombers, and torpedo bombers you could fit on your carrier. -Squadrons could vary in size. Small squadrons would get up in the air faster . Max size generally based on the tier of the CV, from 3 to as many as 10. -Shooting down planes was totally worth it, as it greatly boosted your crews' skill. -Dive bombers were quite effective vs battleships and particularly other carriers. -IJN had hybrid carriers that were very customizable .

It would make more sense for dive bombers to Have AP bombs and have a good chance of getting citadel hits if you can get the bombs as close to amidships as possible.

Ratzap posted:I just got into a Langley and I was wondering if there's a way to change which aircraft it has. Or do I just have to play it as is with 1 fighter and 1 TB? The Langley (and Hosho) are 'baby' CVs. Higher tiers give you the option to spend exp to unluck other loadouts. Generally these follow patterns: -A balanced loadout between all 3 plane types. -A 'fighter' loadout which is all fighters with just one bomber -A 'strike' loadout which has one (or none) fighters in favor of torpedo and dive bombers.

Getting out tiered in a carrier, especially US, is pretty brutal. What I learned is if you are in a Langley or Bogue and up against a Zuiho , Never let him see your fighter. If he sees it on one side of the map, he'll just sneak his strike force over the opposite side and you'll be defenseless. Had a lot of fun coordinating with another carrier, sinking they are willing to cooperate.

I heard the reason battleships have lousy AA and shooting down planes doesn't give much reward because of RU server: apparently the Russians used to have all their battleships clumped up into this deathstar that would disintegrate any plane nearby. So they nerfed AA and rewards.

Devlan Mud posted:This sounds like a good way to get torpedoed to death to me, at least in the current state of the game. Do Russians hate destroyers or something? They would yolo with their destroyers and get killed too quickly. Apparently Russian playstyle was super aggressive. As hard as they are to hit, having 6+ BBs all concentrating on one Destroyer could kill it pretty fast I imagine.

I think I need to focus more on gunnery in my Clemson. Whenever I try to aggressively torp I get wrecked bad. But it's not hard to sandblast other destroyers with cannon. I noticed I do best with torpedoes when I'm not focused on it and rather use them opportunistically.

Wow. Tried the fighter loadout on the Bogue and did surprisingly well with it. Feels pretty good to get double teamed by carriers but shoot most of their planes down. Last two games I shot down 42 planes that's good, right?

I was having such a frustrating time I've been focusing on shooting down enemy bombers and it is much more effective. 42 planes is a LOT, particularly when I deprived the majority of their bombers the ability to hit our ships. A skilled teammate in a cruiser can do far more damage than I can at this point.

This is even with landing AP volleys on a 90 degree angle ship. I've heard you have to hit a specific spot, then probably the shell has to be at a particular angle based on its caliber/armor, then WoWs does some voodoo that gives you a number. I swear some games I hit the exact same spot; sometimes it does 315 damage, sometimes it does 16,824 damage

I learned a couple of tricks with carriers recently: -You can queue up a squadron's actions. As soon as they land back on your carrier, select the action group and send them somewhere. You can even target enemies ahead of time which is nice in case you normally forget to do it right away due to tunnel vision. -Losing a whole squadron means you can immediately launch a replacement. If I'm up against a Hosho/Zuiho and dominating his torpedo bombers, sometimes I'll hold off killing the last one, particularly if they are very far away from the carrier. It is better denial to make him waste time sending that lone torpedo bomber allll the way back then to wipe out the whole squad only to have him launch more immediately. -Planes seem to slow way down when you shoot at them with fighters. Against escorted bombers, I always target their fighters to peel them off the bomber group, then try to use a second squadron to intercept the bombers. If you go straight for the bombers, the escorting fighters will bog down your own, ruining their aim.
