the design shop in SMAC is Good

if you instead prefer static unlocked units you're basically a big gay

the unit design thing was ok on paper but really limited in execution, the only real customization you actually get out of it is picking the two abilities
otherwise you pick the best reactor, and then the best weapon if its an attacker or the best armor if its a defender, having both weapons and armor makes it cost a poo poo ton to build

nah weapons in particular got really really cheap to drop on someone as things got more advanced. like by the time you were rocking chaos beams, there was almost no downside to dropping impact weapons on your garrison guys, which made them mega badass since they could intercept assholes rolling around the outskirts of the city without armor. they keep only adding like 5 or 10 or whatever it is to the overall cost, which is a lot when they're cutting edge, but later on you get that much in bonuses just for existing that day so who cares

synthmetal armor also gets pretty cheap to drop on non-combat units like formers by the time you're rocking clean reactors, so you can send them out to the perimeter to do long term poo poo and not give a gently caress about mind worms. that sort of stuff is why the design shop rules, you can make your own little niches instead of just being like oh ok it's time for another sword rush hooray

of course crawlers still break the game in half so in the big picture none of this matters and the game is still super unbalanced but the point remains that if you disliked the design shop you're a big gay

was there any reason at all to put armor on a jet

If it was multi and someone was actually setting interceptors on a base i guess. You could armor your bombers to make them hurt the interceptors more.

AI basically never did that though so realistically no
