New episode is up.

Pierce... deceased :(

e: This was a funny episode. If there's a criticism I could make it's that I wish Annie wouldn't always get her way by being pointlessly moralizing and histrionic. I swear they've leaned on that character beat too many times.

I kind of do too. The show never did much with Shirley, and its treatment of Pierce was always kind of bizarre. I also am probably in a minority of a minority of Community fans who never really liked Troy that much. It is a little weird that they're all gone now, but I don't think it has a huge impact on quality either.

I can see what Dan meant about feeling like he was dragging his brain across a stone floor. There's so much we've seen these characters do, and with no ability to accept "stock" sitcom plots, you get weird, weird stuff.

I think the best bits this season have been throwaway gags (the tags in particular), which is probably a sign that Harmon would be better served tackling a new project rather than filtering everything through a mostly well-worn set of characters with a flimsy premise for still interacting with one another. But it's still a good TV show so whatever!

The tags are throwing me a bit. The way all the episodes have had the tags before the credits made me wonder if they were sticking non-essential scenes at the end that can be edited out for broadcast to fit in time, but then if that's the case why not just have the tags during the credits like they used to.

They haven't though and I felt it was more apparent in this episode than ever. Chang got written out to do something off-screen so he wouldn't be in the way. Britta walked away from/fell asleep in the Situation Room multiple times. The new old guy didn't really have any relevance to anything. Maybe it's because of the anchored location that didn't provide enough sub-plot devices but a chunk of the cast was useless.

I felt like this one was just a little too dumb with the whole "smear the dog" thing. That would just make sthings worse because they didn't just give a degree to a dog, they gave it to an especially lovely dog.

All the texting stuff was gold though.

It was pretty close to what they did in previous seasons. Abed even mentioned it, I think to Shirley, that they didn't do side-plots.

Plus, Chang should not be a main cast character. He's too unstable to sustain that. He's good for one-off jokes, so sending him off to shoot a solo porno was a good use of his time.

The big change is that the Dean is now a main cast character. He used to have the same role that Chang did: an outsider who keeps showing up, but he's become a focus this season (and last, and to a lesser extent in season 4). Keith David, so far, is closer to the old Dean role: a bystander who is providing an outsider joke interface.

look at this scrub who doesn't appreciate clean credits

Having a tag during credits was a necessity of broadcast. Online you may as well not bother, but if you do you should definitely take advantage of the medium and not obscure the tag with credits. imo

That episode was loving great. Awesome character development for Annie, and a nice moment for Britta that some will write off as a throwaway gag but I think really goes a long way to showing her as something other than a sad-sack punchline. Great dialogue and introspection into hope/hopelessness and loneliness, typical Harmon but that's why I like his stuff. Dialog was on point too, and of course all of the texting was hilarious.

Not a "classic" but just a great resonant character-centric episode all the way through, much like the Blade episode from S3.
