The thing with Shadow Tower vs King's Field is we always thought we'd probably do both but King's Field is the stated predecessor so it was an easier choice. I haven't played Shadow Tower but I didn't hear about its more striking similarities until we had already done KF4.

Yeah, I'm finding that too. Rather than be bitter about it, I'm choosing to see it as a strength of the medium. Mistakes can be fixed. I'm really loving my Scholar playthrough, which is serving as brief break before more BLOOD.

I think he's referring to the WOFF comments about the swastika in Commander Keen. Technically the one appearing there is a manji (I hope to god I remembered that term properly), but it should also tell you something that a later patch for Keen V removed that just to be safe.

Really?

According to the creators, it was meant to be a Wolfenstein Easter Egg, not a Manji.

http://www.shikadi.net/keenwiki/Keen_5_Easter_eggs

And even if the devs intended it to be a Manji, that's misguided and they would have to know full well how it would be interpreted. Symbols change meaning and even if if the national socialist party isn't more important than that specific symbol, I'd argue that the potential misunderstanding is more important than Id deciding to include this little easter egg, which literally adds nothing and whose creators cannot claim any sort of cultural connection with.

Whenever anyone argues for being able to use a swastika (or symbol that is guaranteed to be mistaken for one), it comes off as disingenuous. Or at least willfully edgy.

I was playing the Steam version but it's possible Kole wasn't? I think he found the "easter egg." And my point stands, yes there is a difference but we're all adults and we know how something is going to be construed. This poo poo drives me bonkers. It's similar to people arguing for flying the confederate flag. I know it's not exactly the same since the flag is one symbol and has no old symbol for luck to be confused for but honestly, have some self awareness.

As far as a Torment response, we'll read whatever you send in but possibly not on the air. We do keep track of everything in case an extrasode episode runs a little short so if the comment is relevant to the game at hand or we've got some extra time, we're more likely to read it.

As far as Super Metroid, I know it's controversial, but I think it might be the only good original Metroid game. The first one is neat but too obtuse, the 2nd as well (coupled with some truly awful arbitrary gatekeeping and a camera that is too pushed in). Fusion and Prime present some of the clunkiest storytelling in gaming (especially fusion), and Other M...

A lil more about Prime: I know a lot of people love it but it felt extremely tedious to me on replay. There is an element of environmental storytelling (nothing on the level of Souls but it's sort of there) but that was undercut, for me, by the logs you find. They weren't only overt but they were boring. I think the Chozo are really, really boring when you spell them out (sort of like Wolverine). People who say that Prime feels like a 3D Super Metroid baffle me.

That leaves Zero Mission, which I also think is pretty good, but is obviously based on the original title.

Part of my love for Super Metroid is that it feels unique in the series to me, not just in terms of tone and formula, but in quality.

It's arguably the single worst level in the game, because at least everything else makes you move around and explore to some degree. This is just a giant pit you have to go up and down over and over again for a few keys, unless you can pull off a pogo trick/ride a shot upwards to skip over the required gem and get the "better" ending*. And it's all to a really, really poor synthesized bagpipe score.

* Destroy the fuse at the top of the stage rather than use the exit, and the Shikadi get fined for double-parking in the ending because their ship won't take off anymore.

I wrote a review for it on Steam. That one man managed to make a game with top shelf gameplay, music, sound effects, and visuals, blows me away. It's also quite a bit longer than your average 2D Metroid, clocking in at about 8-12 hours for a typical first run. You should definitely check it out. I'm currently offering a full 15% discount on it on Steam just to get it into more people's hands, because it launched on the same day the Capcom sale started and combined with the ridiculous amount of Witcher 3 hype, it got totally eclipsed and bumped off the top seller list before its debut day was even half over. It deserves better!

The giant bomb quick look for it is probably one of the best and most informative quick looks they've done in years, with Jeff already having beaten it and being informative about the game while playing instead of their typical bumbling. The first 30 minutes are a normal beginning run, then he switches to his endgame save which shows off a ton of the late-game abilities.
