The problem with steampunk is that it's impossible to be punk by adopting the aesthetics and cultural background of a classist, sexist, colonial and white supremacist society. The aesthetic can work on its own by its own merits, but trying to be subversive with it is absolutely incoherent.

While I've never actually seen anything steampunk do it successfully, what you're proposing here is essentially that you can't be subversive by re-appropriating something that is the opposite. I think that's wrong

When you talked about how the Saw Cleaver's description talks about how it only grows in effectiveness the more monstrous the beast, I was wondering if it was just an in-game explanation for why your relatively puny weapon can take down a big nasty monster so well.

It might be a gameplay thing, though.

I can't remember if Gary and Kole mention this in the episode but it definitely alludes to at least one gameplay element: the two saw-type trick weapons have a hidden damage modifier against enemies classified as beasts by the game (there are at least two enemy "type" flags, beast and kin, and then some that don't have either)

Super Metroid is one of maybe five games that I actively lament my inability to ever play for the first time again, rip zapjackson.

Have any of the Duckfeed casts or Idle Thumbs ever fielded "what video games do you most wish you could go back and play for the first time again"? This would actually be a pretty good user response question for WOFF or The Level imo. Or maybe it was done like a year ago and I just don't remember.

I really envy the people playing Bloodborne without prior experience with any Souls games.

Part of the lack of rapport on BFSC could just be the limitations of the Skype format rather than anything wrong w/ hosts, guests, or listeners; I think Gary and Kole are swell guys but it's pretty easy to be stiff and feel like you're talking to yourself when you're unfamiliar with that format, dealing with awkward delay stuff, and unable to read facial cues

Since this is a podcast thread this is kind of on-topic: there's a pretty good episode of This American Life about trolls where a feminist internet writer talks to the most virulent troll she ever encountered on a Skype call or something and he basically admits that he did it because he was a giant loser who felt bad about himself and resented that a woman he didn't find attractive was happy and apparently-confident. It simultaneously manages to depict his behavior as unambiguously wrong and pathetic while also humanizing him.

I can't imagine why anyone interested in the games industry would find it interesting!

It may be embellished, but I doubt it was mostly or totally falsified unless the people making that accusation have no way to prove it. TAL is usually very good at retracting stories they find out are bogus; there are multiple episodes with a single segment that was removed or has a disclaimer added, and there's one really infamous example (Mike Daisey's story about the abhorrent conditions at Apple manufacturers in China) where Ira Glass literally did a follow-up interview episode where he gets as angry as an NPR personality can get and nails the dude to the wall for representing his story as fact.

Honestly LP is like any other kind of performance art. There's a skillset related to the actual technical aspects of the performance (i.e. musicianship, in this case skill and knowledge about the game) and a skillset related to engaging and working an audience and dealing with the pressure of having one.

That form is nascent and you can tell nobody agrees on who the masters are or even what the criteria for judging them should be yet. It's like watching 17th-century stand-up comedians or something.

MGS5 is advertised/demoed/covered as a rejection of that, a game that focuses more heavily on gameplay.

If you actually care about money buy Mario Maker now because Nintendo takes forever to reduce the price of games, and buy MGS5 next year when there's a GOTY edition with bells and whistles on for $29.99.
