Prince is just one of those things 'you had to be there' to understand. To modern ears, his music is indistinguishable for most bands of the late 80s and early 90s, and he's a complete loving weirdo on top of that, so his reputation as The Greatest Musician Ever seems preposterous. He's essentially the Bob Dylan of the 80s: a complete non sequitor to anyone born after his heyday.

The popularity of Prince in the 80s is incomprehensible today because it was in great part the creation of a very skilled media machine and the music alone doesn't justify it. The popularity of Dylan in the 60s is incomprehensible today because nobody can understand how anyone who sings like that ever got recorded in the first place, but he got recorded because music was less polished in those days and people could see what an incredible songwriter he was in his prime.

A lot of other musical acts (wouldn't say "bands" necessarily) sound like Prince because Prince wrote for them. He even set up several whole groups that did not include himself.

I was too young for the original Prince but was right in time for the Chappelle's Show skit that got everyone talking about him again. Now that's pretty much old enough that we're talking about a new generation that has no clue.

This pretty much sums up how I feel about Prince. I'm from a younger generation. And even though I am a huge fan of 80s music in general, his music always sounds boring and uninspiring.

I love that video, because for the first five minutes you're like "hey, isn't Prince supposed to be in here somewhere? Where is he?" And then the camera finally turns to him and he just destroys it. Diamonds and Pearls was a great album. The Gold Experience was too and that came out afterward. If there's a line between "good Prince" and "not as good Prince" I think it's that triple album in the late 90s. Looks like it was called Emancipation, it was such a forgettable album that I couldn't even remember the name and I had to look it up. raditts fucked around with this message at 19:10 on Jun 15, 2015 |
