If so, enjoy Katy Perry trying to sing "Don't Stop Me Now".

Michael Cera of all people ending up covering him blows my mind.

Jerry garcia's I Saw Her Standing There is pretty sucky too. It makes you realize how lovely the song is but the Beatles were still able to pull it off.

Michael Bolton's soul covers. Like, I have no antipathy toward Michael Bolton because I was only born when he was at the peak of his fame (1991), he's got a good voice and some of his originals are pleasant enough, but his soul covers are technically well-performed and that's all there is to it. And you need more than that when you're going to do a soul number. Because when you get down to it, soul music is really all about sex and if you're as inoffensive as Michael Bolton, you can't really pull it off. I'm pretty sure one of them - "Try A Little Tenderness" maybe? - even has Kenny G playing on it. You could get Michael Bolton touring with a horn section featuring Kenny G and Wynton Marsalis and you'd have... something. I'm not sure what, but you'd have something.

Why oh why do people try and cover The Prodigy's Firestarter? Oh you made a fast, aggressive song slow and moody, how clever! Oh you made a fast, aggressive song slow and moody, how clever! Oh you made a fast, aggressive song slow and moody, how clever! Gene Simmons, LOL. Someone called Soulquake System replaced the Breeders sample with some cats in a washing machine and Keith's cockney punk vocal with Cookie Monster. Supultra. Meh. Oh you have a Ukelele, how cute. Now go and make some music for a soap advert or something And there are plenty more. It's just weird that a song that lends itself so poorly to covers has so many covers.

"(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)" covered by Coldplay. I realise this was a tribute to Adam Yauch and everything, and I realise the song wasn't exactly one of the Beastie Boys' most accomplished in the first place, but this is still a bit naff.

^^^ in the UK one of the big national radio stations does a show, Live Lounge, where artists come in and cover something that's in the charts. It's invariably trendy Indy bands doing oh so ironic covers of pop songs, and sounds exactly like this. Almost always terrible.

I don't really listen to Radio 1 (mostly just Radio 2 when I'm in the car or U105 when there's nothing good on Radio 2), but I'm familiar with it. I'm not sure that I've heard any that are especially awful; I remember one with fun. (remember them?) covering "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye (remember him?) but that's about it. I don't really understand how Coldplay got so popular. They're just so boring. Chris Martin doesn't have an interesting voice. I know it's a lazy and tired comparison but I honestly think they're the Nickelback of the UK's post-Britpop era. Are they even a rock band? You know it's pertinent that I mentioned Radio 2, because I remember a couple of years ago I was listening to Steve Wright when Train* were the guests, and he read out a text message from a listener who bragged that they'd been at the show last night "rocking out" to train ("HEY SOUL SISTER! "). That's amusing, but I think Train might actually rock harder than Coldplay. * I recall Train having this really bad cover of "Ramble On" which they performed at Hard Rock Calling in 2011 (?), and got a really tepid response from the crowd... who went comparatively nuts when they got their ukeleles out to play "Hey Soul Sister".

Fair enough; I wasn't really attuned to pop music at the time and I'm admittedly looking at this with the benefit of hindsight. Nu-metal isn't so much of an enigma to me; it was loud and aggressive but ultimately "safe" music by and for angry middle-class white guys who believed they were social outcasts and probably either outgrew it or became juggalos after it died down. Post-grunge is somewhat more perplexing; not the fact that the genre became popular, but more that the biggest bands were Nickelback and Creed, while the Foo Fighters were right there. Do you get what I mean?

BigFactory posted:Yeah but could they do that James Brown cover? I rest my case. Pamplemoose has "it". I don't think it was a very good James Brown cover. I don't think it had the grit you need for a James Brown cover. I think if you're going to cover James Brown, you need to put more grit into your performance. It seemed bland to me. Of course, it's entirely possible that it's simply a song that doesn't lend itself well to reinterpretation. Maybe some songs only work in a particular style. I couldn't say. FactsAreUseless posted:For 30- and 40-somethings in the 2000s, that was about as close as it got to the kind of rock they grew up with. In other words: they were familiar, and sometimes that's all it takes. I've been thinking, wouldn't the arena rock they'd have grown up on been stuff like Journey and Def Leppard? One would think they'd like something a little more dynamic than Coldplay if that was the case. Okay, actual content: Here's Duran Duran covering a Public Enemy song.
