But setting that aside, here's another thing that makes them different than SPG: Daft Punk have professionally made, cool LED helmets. SPG look like they should be hanging out in the ballpit at Dashcon.

I mean you could do the same thing w/r/t making an argument of the meaning with steampunk or whatever. Other people wearing the helmets doesn't do anything-dudes have wore red leather jackets and sequined gloves, it didn't mean MJ was wearing that poo poo for any reason other than he thought it looked cool. It still ends up with having two dudes who look like TRON cosplayers vs. a bunch of dudes who look like an Emilie Autumn fanclub.

I'm just not seeing the extreme reaction from the same type of acoustic cover tons of songs get, besides the aforementioned fact of Daft Punk being a SA sacred cow.

The LED helmet in particular is a very powerful method to convey and invoke emotion in the audience. For example, if the LED helmet displays the word love, it will make the audience think about love.

I see subliminal messaging has evolved from backwards messaging on Judas Priest records to Daft Punk broadcasting words like a schoolroom projector.

Daft Punk makes dumb disco music. They're KC and the Sunshine Band for a new generation. Hell, I appreciate that steampunk giraffe is out there trying to make a living as musicians/street buskers with absolutely zero singing ability. They have half the talent and all of the gender dysmorphia of your average youtube ukulele cover song dude but they can afford smoke machines so they're doing something right.

The Onion AV Club had a similar segment going where bands (some well-known, mostly unheard) would do covers of Top 40 hits. The well-known acts generally did a good job with the material, but the lesser known acts all had to let you know how much cooler and above the songs they were. But I'd rather listen to Semi-Charmed Life on the radio for the umpteenth time than listen to whatever this incomprehensible poo poo is supposed to be:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiUiSt2Hk1c

I agree with the sentiment in general but that specific example isn't bad at all, and the band doesn't seem to be taking the piss, it seems like an earnest attempt to turn that song into something good, and it... isn't really that bad.

e: Unless you turned it off before the song started proper, I guess the intro with the saw is a little annoying. By the 3 minute mark it just sounds like the original song being played acoustic and by people with a lot more talent

It's a joke about how the Associated Press literally reported that Fred Durst had been arrested for murders because they hosed up and thought he was Bob Durst. Like not just the name, but by actually saying that he was both a real estate mogul and the lead singer of Limp Bizkit.

To be honest I skimmed through the rest of the song after the loving bandsaw intro, but I still hate the singer's whiny delivery. I hate the indietastic trend of singing like a trembling warbly retard instead of putting some conviction into the words you're saying. Mostly I just dislike the idea that a perfectly good piece of pop cheese like Semi-Charmed Life needs to be rehabilitated by a bunch of dudes with sloppy beards and bad haircuts, the original knows exactly what kind of song it is and if you're covering it you should just embrace the cheese. That goes for most covers of Top 40 songs in general.

As far as white soul singers from the 1980s go, I'd rank George Michael above a lot of them. Above Mick Hucknall (Simply Red was never a cool band), Michael Bolton (I've made my thoughts clear on Michael Bolton already in this thread) and Lisa Stansfield, certainly, and leagues ahead of Boy George's solo work. Not sure where I'd put him in comparison to Paul Young; his solo work is a bit too soft rock for my tastes, and George Michael probably had better songs on the whole, but the Q-Tips (and their two albums) were a really good band; as far as retro-influenced soul bands from the 1980-1982 period go, only Dexys Midnight Runners were better.

One thing I like about George Michael is that, unlike a lot of the English pop singers who became popular in the 1980s, he didn't sound like a clone of Tony Hadley.

Agreed, that one's not too bad, and the ones where the band/artist goes completely outside of the box to do the cover are some of the best ones in that series (sorry, I know this is the worst covers thread, but these are so off the wall that they work).
