:siren: DEVELOPMENTS!!! :siren:

Mechanic says it has jumped a tooth (wtf, it has a timing CHAIN) on the exhaust side. It's off to BMW (in CHERMANY no less) to be fixed.

How and when the hell that happened I have no idea, and what else I have no idea about is how much I hosed it when I floored it and heard a very unpleasant clacking sound :ohdear:

Edit: also, guy says he hasn't spent that much time on it so far. I'm not 100% clear on what he has replaced and what not, but I'm more confident now that he hasn't been loving about on my dime.

The CHERMANS messed around with the drat thing for quite some time, and in the end discovered that the cat was very melted, internally, thereby severely restricting the Durchfluss im das Auspuffanlage, jah?

New cat should have been mounted (list price for the part: €1926. Eek.) and the little red money sink should be ready to be discharged soon.

Clogged cats can definitely gut the power and cause an overheat, but the clacking is still confusing.

I have never been so glad that my car is just old enough (within a couple of months), that I can just slap any old cat on there, it doesn't have to be OEM and ripoff-priced.

My thoughts exactly, but they claim it runs fine now. A clogged cat could sorta be a increasingly deteriorating failure, right?

To be fair that's just my speculation and the list price I found. The part is actually the entire exhaust sans rear muffler. I don't know what they actually put on there or what the price is.

Car has been discharged! Total bill somewhere around $2k which could be a lot worse tbh.

Final tally was basically one new thermostat, one new cat (at roughly $1100) and maybe an air filter? Not entirely sure, I'll need to check up on that.

I asked the same thing in the bmw thread and he hasn't replied.

The only chain of events I can think of is the tstat was failed for some time, keeping the engine too cool so the ecu had it running very rich which toasted the cat. But that's not gonna happen overnight, and I would think he'd have seen either a trouble code, and/or noticed the temp gauge running low.

Edit:

bolind posted:

I *think* I've had the thermostat issue for years so if I had to wager a guess, I'd say no. No idea, really, though.

And yeah, I'll take a thousand euros of cat over a new engine. That would've stung.

Ahahahahahahaahahheheheheheeehihihii *snicker*

BMW does not equip their vehicles with such a useful device, no siree. Last one was in the E46 and contemporaries, and even then it was biased perfectly towards the middle as to not scare off people.

Like I said, I have not received any sort of temp warning, but that being said, I don't know under what conditions such a thing is triggered.

I guess your theory is plausible. I can't think of any other explanation, and the mechanics were also at a loss.

angryrobots
Mar 31, 2005

Ha, I actually used to own a 128i, I forgot it didn't have a permanent gauge (you have a hidden menu where you can view a lot of extra information including coolant temp but you probably know this).

blindjoe

When the brand new thermostat I put into my e60 failed open, I got a check engine light and "engine too cold" code.
Too bad I did it myself with ebay parts, so I just sent the car to the shop for the second one because taking the water pump out to get at the thermostat on an xdrive car sucks.

Anyways, much better clogged cat than whatever weirdo stuff the mechanic was trying to fix.

Tell them to compression check that motor and don't take no for an answer. Seriously it would take 20 minutes.

Just buy yourself a scangauge and permanently mount it. I have one in my Aygo which I use for coolant, rpm and mpg.

Looking into that, wouldn't be a bad idea.

Edumacate my simple rear end; why? To check for HG leaks?

angryrobots
Mar 31, 2005

Yes. At this point it HAS to be eliminated as a problem, IMO.

I mean like I said before, maybe that's not it and I hope it's something easier and cheaper. But it costs zero dollars (or um...whatever the currency of your region) to check and make sure it's good to move forward with diagnosing this overheating issue.

Thanks man. Talked to the mechanic briefly and he said he'd do a compression test, but I'm not sure if he meant of the cylinders or of the cooling system. You meant of the cylinders, right?

angryrobots
Mar 31, 2005

Ya. There's a combustion leak test kit that tests the coolant but, personally I think a compression test is better.

Now where the gently caress were we...

Seats
Still in the living room, much to the annoyance of my wife. :suicide:

Overheating/Water Pump
Fixed, seems to work.

Rough Running/Catalytic Converter
Seems to work. Finally got a chance to get her on the hoist. Initially I thought they had replaced the "middle" cat, but it turns out the car has a cat as part of the exhaust manifold. Looks like this:

That weird purple rubber thing? First I thought it was supposed to mount to somewhere, just on another model, but it seems like the part has been redesigned, and that it's just there. Hoping it'll dampen some vibrations, maybe that was what shook the old cat apart internally? Just speculating.
Also, The ET looking bracket thing broke off on the old and had to be welded, so at least that's fresh.

Still, leave it to the loving Germans to make the manifold and cat one piece... fuckers.

Also, other people working on my poo poo... I know for a fact that fastener wasn't a zip-tie when I turned the car in:

Front Brakes
Did a little walkaround with the micrometer. Rear discs are within spec, but fronts are under or getting close to it (minimum is 20.4mm):

Waiting for the last bits from CHERMANY which should arrive tomorrow and then I can do those. Can't wait to exercise the Makita impact.

RPM-dependent Rattle Which I Think is Hydraulic Lifter Noise
It's developed this rattle which I think is lifter noise. It seems to be the same for a given ride, but some are way worse than others. Also, the colder the car is when started, the worse. I've taken delivery of a oil cleaning product which I'll try, but the car has been behaving ever since it arrived (scared straight?) so for the time being I'm holding off.

Near Side ABS Tone Ring Replacement
It's not actually giving any problems. I'll see if I can pop out the axle at home, reattach, and then do the job on my mate's hoist.

Odds and ends
  • Change bulbs for rear license plate illumination.
  • Change headlight bulbs from crap ones I found in the bottom of the toolbox to the nice ones I have sitting.
  • Code start/stop to be permanently off again (lost it during repairs, shop must've updated all SW/reset everything.)
  • Wash & Vacuum.
  • Rubber mats if I can be bothered before spring.

Also, it's a bit cold here at times:

I like ATE galvanized discs so much. Didn't get a pic of the old ones (new and old were the same) but they were basically not rusty at all, except of course on the swept area.

I also <3 my Makita impact very, very much.

Pip-Pip old chap! Last one in is a rotten egg what what.

My E46 had the rear plate light unit replaced for the MOT when I bought it, and again two years later, there was virtually no metal left in it so I just soldered wires to cheap LED bulbs to replace the copper strips they came with.

Thanks, all. I haven't been assed to do something about this for now, but inspection is coming up, so hopefully I will. I don't think it's a fail, but it'll go from green to yellow online when you look it up, and my OCDness just can't have that.

I DID however get assed to do something about my stupid axle:

Using this:

Turned out most of my worries were unfounded, and it popped with surprisingly little force applied, considering both I and the airhammer had wailed on it for an entire evening with no result. I just loosened the retaining nut a few mm, popped it loose, and buttoned everything up again. Wednesday I'll go to my mate's shop and commandeer his hoist, and change out the stupid ABS ring that started all this nonsense.

Profanities aside, it actually went OK. Took four hours including a kebab. Would not have been possible without a lift. Makita impact is still a loving hero, even if it/the operator obliterated a T50 security bit.

Oh, and the $90 original BMW ABS sensor is made by (surprise, surprise) Ate, so just buy the non-OEM one from them for half the price, I guess.
