latest updates: :siren:The End:siren:

What the hell is this
This is Valkyria Chronicles 2, the sequel to the tactical turn-based strategy game released back on PS3 and recently ported to the PC. Unlike the 1st game, this one was released on the PSP. Also released during the peak of "Monster Hunter" syndrome which lots and lots and lots and lots of grinding in the worst way.

What's the story?
As this is the sequel to VC1, you should probably watch Apepresident's LP here.

Spoilers for VC1: The Imperial army and Gallia have a ceasefire after Gallia kicked their asses, only for the Queen/Archduchess to reveal she was a Darcsen all along. Also reveals the gods/religion of Valkyur was a big fat lie and Darcsens were treated like poo poo for no reason.

Too bad that doesn't stop a bunch of southern racists from really not giving a drat because they hate blue-haired people that much, and started a Civil War. Which only a school academy can stop for some reason....

...yeah.

Spoiler Policy
Don't spoil the plot. Does that really require more than a sentence?

Style of LP
Screenshot, and casual. I'm not getting any A ranks or super maxed out or whatever, we are just going to experience the game as it is. If I missed anything, probably tell me but I'm not going out of my way to reset a mission just because I didn't get a A. I'll still post artbook pages so I'm not totally lazy.

Prologue

The Opening
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjH8bWaEZcY

I really hate openings that spoil so much.

We'll get to the other options at a later point, because we're diving right into the game here. No time to waste!

There's an actual difficulty setting, and I was tempted to choose Easy since this is a casual run. But I have my reasons for going Normal. And it's honestly not that hard aside from...a few missions.

This is just a basic overview if you didn't play VC1 or forgot.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMh88MVgQsY

Valkyria Chronicles 2 takes places 2 years after the war.

And for a very stupid reason, even beyond the usual reasons for war.

But first, a small and peaceful town.

What can I do for you?

Hey, my brother Leon goes there!

You'll confirm that this is your brother, then?

I realize this is sudden, and it pains me to the bearer of sad tidings...But your brother, Leon Hardins, has passed away.

I offer you my sincerest condolences.

Hey, wait just a minute! Why is...How did he die?!

All that goes on at the academy is classified for national security. I'm afraid I cannot tell you any of the details surrounding his death.

That pose? You're going to see that a lot. He does that. A lot.

Leon wouldn't...My brother can't be dead, man, that's crazy! He was stronger than anybody I ever-

*Explosion from afar*

*Machine gun fire, more explosions*

That was nearby.

Rebels, now?! Of all the times they could pick...

Uh, is that guy on the left okay...?

O-okay!

Just remember what we all learned back in training and we'll be fine. Now let's go!

Every mission begins with a summary of what the battle is about, Victory and Loss objectives.

This mission is a failure if Avon dies, Morale is 0, or if for some godforsaken reason you don't win in 20 turns.

It also gives you info on the enemies and other stuff that will be explained later.

Avon has two rifle fodder with him, but they all carry the same equipment so use whoever to murder these "Rebels."

Avon Hardins. There's something I'd like to go over with you.

Hubert is basically giving us a tutorial. Currently we're in Command Mode, a bird's eye view of the battlefield.

To go into a third-person mode where you control a character, you have to select one of your blue circles.

Stars appear in the upper left, and each star represents CP (Command Points). Selecting a character uses up 1 CP, as Avon will demonstarte being chosen.

Now we're in Action Mode, where moving requires the left analog stick and/or the Dpad (for walking). Camera is controlled left/right using the shoulder buttons, while going up/down is controlled by Triangle and Square respectively.

The orange bar is basically your stamina for traveling. Once you run out, you can't move anymore though you can still do other actions if available.

Attacking in VC2 is used with the Square Button to initiate aiming, and Cross to confirm the attack. Definitely a change that will trip up VC1 veterans.

Keep in mind going to aim mode stops the enemy from firing, so one trick is to just mash the Square button once you enter Action Mode if an enemy is nearby to prevent them from getting off a shot. Can save you lots of residual health over time.

Normally I would try and hide to creep up an enemy to reduce damage, but enemies here barely scratch Avon's health bar. So I just run right up to an enemy's head for the killshot.

There's basically no reason not to hit the head whenever possible, as it deals almost twice the damage of a body shot. It's also worthwhile to get as close as possible because the orange reticule is the range of the bullets. The closer you are, the less variance the bullets will fly off other than the enemy's head.

Once you're done with a character's turn, press Start to go back to Command Mode. Keep in mind that the enemy will stop firing once you exit out of Action Mode, so theoretically you can camp right next to an enemy, spam Aim mode and exit out before the enemy fires a shot. Useful for close range fighters to get hits in without dying.

Now this is still my first turn, so Avon is just going to mosey down to the next guy with my remaining AP. This is important to do because picking a character again in the same Command turn gives them AP fatique, which means Avon would start regardless with less AP next time I choose him this turn.

By the way, I got shot like 8 times. Look at Avon's health. He is bulletproof.

Sandbags and general places where you can crouch via Circle button are incredibly important. Being in a crouched position gives a huge defensive bonus. Shots to the head that would overkill by 2 bullets would barely do half to a crouching enemy. But right now, they're not needed.

Obviously killed that soldier, but extra shots managed to reach the other one. More of a happy accident, because most of the time it won't happen and the effort to set up double kills isn't worth it.

This is Avon after being selected 3 times. His AP is way down, which is how the game encourages you to use up quantity over quality. Avon easily destroyed these 3 Rebels, but on a different map with more enemies, I would use the Rifle fodder to travel farther on the other side since he's fresh on AP.

All right! We sent them packing!

We did it, team. Team work, team work :geno:

After each mission, you're ranked based on how fast you finished the mission. Considering the turn limit, Avon basically hugging the Rebels with bullets was the only way to guarantee the best rank.

After the battle

A fine bit of leadership. gathering those men in the face of a surprise attack. Apparently it's a family trait.

Hey. You really won't tell me how my brother died?

That is correct. It's classified information, I'm afraid.

I guess that ends our conversation.

What? You want to enroll?

Leon can't be dead. My brother just wouldn't so down that easy. Period.

I must beg to differ. This certificate of death indicates that he--

*rips paper in half*

I'm telling you I don't buy it. Not until I see proof with my own eyes!

I don't think that's how death works, Avon....

Hmm. Then I suppose you'll be needing this.

An application for new enrollment at Lanseal.

I have to apply?! Come on, you said you're a teacher!

Avon, that's not how schools work....

As a non-scouted applicant you'll face stricter standards for acceptance. If you still wish to apply. I won't stop you. All are at liberty to try. But if you think just anyone can get in. well... You'll learn soon enough.

Um....

Now, if you'll excuse me. Perhaps we'll meet again. Good day. *walks away*

If Gallia's ever gonna be at peace again, guys like us have to fight for it. Application for student enrollment? Fine, I'll pass your stupid test.

I'm not sure what Avon is trying to say. Is he trying to cut a promo to call out on Death?

End Prologue

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1JfdP8SxVE

Still reeling from the recent invasion, Gallia now faces new troubles from within.

This is basically Abraham Lincoln revealing he was British AND black AND Indian. Somehow.

United by their hatred of the Darcsens, a group of nobles forms the Gallian Revolutionary Army.

So despite being told that their entire reason for hating Darcsens was completely false, they just really hate blue hair it turns out.

Look at that fucker with the twin drills. We're gonna get goofy rear end boss fights in this game.

The SOUTH, eh?

Late title card, right on cue.

January-Entrance Exam

Your school--the Lanseal Royal Military Academy!

Oof, it sure was a haul, though. My butt's still numb from the train ride. Man, is this place big! How many students does a school like this have?

It's pretty cool to see it for myself after hearing all about it from you. Leon....

They said I need to change into uniform and get to the classroom. Here goes!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWTlLUCBY3c

The oldest and most prestigious martial institution in all of Gallia.

Victory through diligence; peace through strength.

Why yes, that is a tank doing exercise. Even gears need a workout, apparently.

So outside of missions, gameplay is basically moving around the academy. Double explanation marks is mandatory story stuff, and it's the only available option right now.

But what kind of school makes you wear a uniform just to get on campus?

I know Leon said access was restricted when I asked if I could visit. National security and blah blah blah, outsiders arrested on sight. Brutal! Well. that’s the military for you. At least I got this loaner for the exams.

First up's the written test. Ugh. brain work was never my forte...

Oh we're doing this, are we.

Hmmm...No, no...Aha! Perfect.

"Your greatest adversary lies within. Wage war with the weakness in yourself."

Daaaang! That's so true. bro. You always had the best quotes!

Why can't people wear glasses just to wear them....

Ooh, right. Sorry. I'll be super quiet. Huuup...

What is Cosette doing? Is she...laughing?

Supportive? Look. I came here because I was scouted. Thanks, but I don't need support from some starry-eyed applicant.

Oh poo poo, the red thingie is out!

Ngh! Nnnnnnnnnnngh!

BWAAAH! Huff...pant...

I...what

Wha--? How did that seem like a good idea to you?!

Even Avan doesn't know what the gently caress.

Ugh. it's like a train wreck. I don't want to stare. but--

So VC2 does active portrait moving since they can't fit in actual character models to interact. Avan's picture bumps into Zeri to indicate pushing I think.

:stare: Whoah...uh, keep your kinks to yourself there

Hmph.

Jerk.

L-Let's just all get through this, yeah? Good luck, guys!

Hm...

The test will begin now. I'll begin by passing out your question booklets.

*Time passes and the school bell rings*

Pencils down! I'll collect your response sheets now. Next up is the field exam. Dress for combat report to the drill ground.

Bleagh. I managed to get to all the questions, but I was mostly guessing.

It outsold both VC1 and VC2, and was so popular it re-released with so much extra content it was basically an extra game. Sadly the translation only covered the main story but way better than nothing. VC1 was not popular at all in Japan, and VC2 was a response to the anime of VC1 being popular. When VC2 tanked as well, VC3 was the swan song of putting everything out there like Front Mission 5 and Fire Emblem Awakening was.

The Entrance Exam

After meeting up with the 2 other core characters, Avan has to head out and pass the physical part of the test.

I haven't been updating at all on who voices who, but this is a good time to tell you that Rodriguez is voiced by John DeMaggio. Yes, he's a Valkyria Chronicles regular for some reason. I guess work was really hard to find before Adventure Time.

You will now form teams of three and participate in simulated combat. Answer when called. Cosette Coalhearth!

Y-Yes, sir!

Next is...Zeri!

Yes, sir.

Last up: Avan Hardins!

Smooth.

You are Team A!

But not the A Team, although we do get a tank later.

You bet! All set to go, Zeri?

Just my luck I get the two of you dumped on me.

Excuse me?! You care to repeat that, tough guy?

Pipe down, maggots! If you're ready to begin, step forward.

You won't be using live ammo here but a hit to the wrong spot can still kill.

Don't so dropping your guard just because this is a simulation.

As if! I've got Plans, and none of 'em involve dying here.

Hoo...I'm all nervous. I hope this goes well.

It's like my brother used to say. Er... Oh yeah! *flips through book*

"Envision the self you wish to be, then take action to become him."

All right, let's go, you two! Move out!

Okay!

Hmph.

So today we got the most common mission type, which is capturing bases for victory. The goal here is to capture the main enemy base. Losing is either everyone dying, our own main base captured, or 20 turns passing.

Avan and Zeri have different weapon types (Rifle and Machine Gun), but Cosette goes one step further and replaces grenades with a potion basically.

Now here's the first big change from the first game. Since this is on a PSP, large maps were replaced with multiple small maps connected by a waypoint (commonly certain bases).

Our mission is to simply capture the enemy base, but it's on a different map than what the trio started on. Having a unit stay within an owned base aura gives it much larger health regen that happens at the start of every turn.

The first part of this mission will involve capturing this base to access the 2nd map.

This is the 2nd map, and the orange indicator is a neon sign saying "capture me and you win!" Not important right now, but on much bigger maps it's a big deal to figure out the puzzle of reaching to it the fastest.

Another big and frankly terrible change is the severely low units you can have active per mission. Even though your roster will nearly have 20 people in it, you can only have 6 characters out of storage across all the maps during the mission. It's not even a technical problem because the third game bumps the max unit amount higher.

Anyways, Zeri will be the first to run up and try to turbo conquer the first map's base. The game's still at a point when my guys can tank point-blank hits like it's nothing.

Zeri can't go nearly as far as Avan since he's a Shocktrooper, but in exchange his weapon is much more powerful and defensively beefier in defense and HP. The machine gun fires a lot more bullets than the rifle, but has way worse accuracy as you can see with the orange reticule. Damage is is also distanced based for MGs, so don't think trying to snipe someone at max distance with a Shocktrooper.

Cosette here is going to run up and capture the base that Zeri cleared. You can't capture enemy bases if an enemy unit is near the flag, hence why Zeri had to unload a magazine into that student's head.

Now that the base is ours, this gives us access to the 2nd map and the usual functions of bases.

Another important change is how Standby works, and how it's integral to VC2's mission structure.

Standby removes the unit from the battle entirely, freeing up whatever current map's max is (3 here, 6 overall), and refilling that unit's health/ammo if deployed again after this turn. The strategy is to rotate in fresh characters once you capture a base to continue momentum without being burdened by low health/AP/ammo, etc.

However, keep in mind the enemy can always re-capture a base with the same rules applied. So don't be eager to standby immediately once you capture a new base, if any nearby enemies are in range to just hop over and steal it back.

With the base captured, the 2nd map can accessed by pressing the shoulder buttons to rotate in the new map. Don't worry about capturing the base on the other side, it's already under your control. That's when strategy comes in and capturing Gateway Camps with enemies on the other side can be surprise murdered (Though the same applies to you).

Anytime you see the arrows in the middle, you are in that base's aura range. You don't have to be directly on top of the flag to capture or go on standby.

Avan gets up and tries to murder the last student on the 1st map, but crouch defense is too strong for him as multiple headshots barely do half when normally it would kill.

So Avan pulls out the grenade via change weapon (Square button during Aim Mode) to blow up his cover.

Grenades are limited ammo, replenishing 1 every turn. They're flung over a short arc, don't explode until they land, and generally do good damage. They are mostly used to destroy sandbags or smoke out units hiding in the grass, but also useful if you're not confident in your unit's accuracy with the more evasive enemies later on.

But like I said, crouching gives defense against all damage so the student still lives what would've been fatal.

Avan retreats back to home base to protect capturing shenanigans, and secure a fast travel to the 2nd map if needed.

Now if this was a real mission instead of a tutorial, that Scout would run over and capture the unguarded Gateway Camp. That's why there's going to be a lot of units just sitting around and playing defense in the future.

Turn 2 rolls around, so I have Avan and Cosette go to Standby and pop out of the 2nd map Gateway Camp.

Popping out of a base eats up 1 CP (2 CP for most tanks), but is instantaneous unlike VC1 when you had to wait a turn after selecting from the reserves menu.

If a units lose all their HP, they can be touched by another ally unit and be able to re-deploy two turns later as if nothing happened.

But if an enemy touches your fallen unit instead or you don't revive within 3 turns, they are hospitalized and can't be used for the rest of the mission. A far less cruel fate than literally dying forever in VC1.

Engineer is Cosette's class. They are absolutely not an offensive class, with the worst HP, defense, and offense (Pistol is weak with bad range). However, they are the ultimate support class with healing (Square Button like grenades) and the ability to completely refill ammo by just nudging allies.

That said, not that great with such a small deployment limit and health/ammo not being an issue for the most part. Especially if you're trying to go for A ranks, which means wasting a CP just to heal is an incredible waste.

Anyways, Avan goes up to try and end the mission but gets ambushed by two enemy Scouts. That just mildly irritates him, so he pops the camper hiding behind the box.

Being shot about 20 times almost threatens Avan's health below half, but he's got the main enemy camp in sight.

Meanwhile, Zeri finishes off the 1st map's Shocktrooper because eh why not.

Cosette runs up since her AP is fresh and finishes off the other ambusher, with a rare kill opportunity.

Cosette and Avan are in position to win next turn, but you can see in the upper left that my morale went from 3 to 4 after Cosette's kill. That will be explained later.

Just like enemies, our units will start firing on any foes that run up to their direct line of vision. The Scout gets rocked by a barrage of bullets, even being tagged by Cosette's pistol which inflicts AP usage up.

Status afflictions are basically useless for us, fyi. Killing in one move is far better.

Avan jumps over sandbags by just pushing forward until he does the animation, but another dirty camper takes shots at him in the meantime.

But killing everyone is not today's goal, it's capturing that base. What Avan here will do is just nudge the grenade so the explosion pushes the enemy Shocktrooper out of the flag's range so he can capture it.

Welp

I tried

Nice! They got to let us in after that!

So...A rank was probably Zeri clearing the 1st base, Cosette capturing, and then sending Avan to run halfway into the 2nd map in the 1st turn. Yeah, gently caress that.

I have all three of you on Team A as having passed the written exam. Guess that means you're in.

Yay! I was so worried about the field exam. but we did it!

It's because you guys helped push me along.

No worries. Heh. the field exam was the only part I wasn't worried about.

What aptitude are they screening? Eh. guess we'll find out soon enough.

*later that day*

What does this thing tell you? I don't get it.

*After everyone takes the test*

I did it. Avon! I got placed as an engineer!

Is that what you wanted?

Yeah! I want to be a doctor, someday.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. What did you get, Zeri?

I placed as a shocktrooper. And you?

Okay, I guess this is a "clever" way of designating classes and letting Avan be the MyUnit/Avatar special character. On the other hand, shouldn't this take place before going into battle with set classes...?

Oh. does that mean you have an aptitude for all of them? That's amazing!

That, or an equal lack of aptitude for any of them.

Zeri is voiced by Crispin Freeman, if you needed a smug bar to judge.

You jerk! You gonna be like this all the time?

Don't you two start again! We all just made it in. Let's try to get along.

Yeah, I guess you're right. We're in this together now. guys.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2j2nb-rMXeY

What the gently caress was that, did they run out of time that day

I came here with a purpose. And I'll tell you now, it isn't to be around with clowns like you. I'm going to the headmaster's office now for my class Placement. *steps away*

...That was the worst misdirection yet.

Um... I kind of doubt it's because of his glasses.

Ooh. but I should head off now, too. I'll see you later, Avan. *walks off*

All right. Next stop, the headmaster's office.

Maybe I can set some info about Leon out of him while I'm there. It's worth a try, at least.

I WONDER WHAT WILL HAPPEN, NEXT

I think we're maybe a quarter in before everything's unlocked in terms of tutorial. There's a poo poo load more mechanics that the game will introduce, it's going to get bloated pretty fast.

As for Cosette, Engineers are straight up medics now. Anything other than "Heal me" or "Give me ammo" has been split up and regulated to other new classes.

Avan Hardins, sir. I just passed the entrance exam.

Whoah, grandpa wants a hug real bad.

I am the headmaster here, Laurence Kluivert. It's nice to meet you, Avan.

Hmm. It seems your exam results place you in Class G. I hope you'll make the most of your time here at Lanseal, my boy.

Um...

Is there something else, son?

Leon was just a student here. How could he just so and die?

Your brother was a student of great promise, and a true patriot. He stood out amongst his peers in intelligence, strength, and leadership.

Hmm....

I'm afraid national security concerns prevent me from giving details...But just before his death, he was appointed to a special mission.

A special mission?

"I've been selected for a special mission. It's an honor and an opportunity."

That was his last letter. The next I heard was from that Brixham guy.

As I imagine you know. this is Gallia's only military academy, Avon. The students here study and train tirelessly to keep their nation safe. That was Leon's aim in accepting the mission that cost him his life as well. Sadly, that is all I can tell you. That, and that your arrival here...

....

Avan is still planning to dig out Leon's corpse after this.

Gallia's people are living in fear and anguish in the face of rebel atrocities. I pray you will grow to become a powerful force for justice, Avan.

Yes, sir. I'll do my best.

*after the meeting*

So I guess this is home, now. For my first crack at dorm living, it's not so bad!

Considering he gets his own room, yeah it's better than just about any college dorm at least.

Yaaaawn...Man, I'm bushed. Between that train ride and the exam. I'm gonna some sleep like a rock. Better get a good night's sleep in before classes start up tomorrow!

So sleeping ends the day, and prompts a save attempt. I really hate when games make you save, then you save like 3 minutes later after a short cutscene.

*The next morning*

Better be careful not to screw it up on day one. Leon, if you please...

Wait what

"Man is king of his realm until he gets overwhelmed. Take it all in slowly."

He's giving segways to a quotebook of his dead brother...to himself. Okay.

I just wish I knew more about what happened to you, Leon. I came here to find out, but so far it's all still a big blank.

But it's like you said. I'll take it slow and earn the headmaster's trust.

Maybe he'll tell me more about that mission once I've earned a rep. Now that that's settled. I'm stoked to get started! Next stop, Classroom G!

*A moment later*

Yes, Avan's portrait is literally running across the screen. And then actually doubles back onto the screen.

*Bell rings*

Who shows up late to class on the first day?! *finds student* Hey, buddy! Where's Class G's homeroom at?!

Class G? It's in the next building over.

Got it. Thanks, man!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SscNihK9UV4

I don't know why this was animated. Oh no, he's late but not really?

What a coincidence. I totally didn't see this coming.

Well, I woke up early so I wouldn't have to rush, then ate a good breakfast.

But then I was so full. I kind of nodded off. I got here just under the wire.

See, this is why I don't think Avan is that dumb. Because there are dumber.

*Someone steps up*

WHAT A COINCIDEN-ah, gently caress it

Oh hey, it's Zeri. What do mean what are we doing here? We got put in Class G.

What?! Ungh, of course I HAD to be placed with you.

Zeri knows what game plot logic is.

Oh, wow! Yay! I'm in Class G, too! All three of us are together!

*loud slam noise heard, crowd murmurs*

Whoa, is that coming from the classroom?

*Trio enters the classroom*

Me? I'm Avan Hardins. I'm in Class G, starting today.

Hmph. Another fine misfit for your pathetic little club.

Whoah, slow down there. There's too many cliches cratering at my face right now.

Your class is a sort of landfill for those with abysmal entrance scores.

Does that mean Zeri is dumb as Cosette

Hey, what's your deal?

It's the unalloyed truth. You haven't even produced a class chair. Your sustained presence at this academy shames me. You stain Lanseal's name!

Ngggrh!

*Crowd hesitates*

Hmph. Not a one. You see? Just as I said. Class G is a--

HERE!

What? O-Oh my! What AM I doing?! I just got so angry listening to her talk, my hand just shot up!

With my hand in it?!

Hmph. Ridiculous. It's painfully obvious that you don't have what it takes.

What? What's your problem, talking down to everybody like you own the place?

You want a class chair? Fine! I'll do it!

Please. You're barely fit to follow, let alone lead. That takes an elite.

*Zeri steps up*

What a tiresome word. There are few things more pathetic than the pedigree of a self-styled elite.

Zeri burning on this game and cliches. Which is a cliche in itself gently caress

*somebody walks in*

What's going on here? Even you lot don't usually make this much noise.

! Brixham!

Juluana! Is there a reason you've chosen to visit us today?

Professor Brixham... I was just on my way. *leaves*

*Bell rings*

All right, let's begin today's lesson, shall we?

I'm as surprised as you are. To see that you actually matriculated, even.

Just say enrolled, you fancy jerk

Now then, before we begin class, I'd like to introduce a few new students. This is Avan...Cosette...

Avan Hardins, guys. My hobbies include sleeping and eating! I'm glad to be here, and I'm sure we'll all get on great.

Those are not hobbies, goddamnit

It's worth mentioning that Avan here is Leon Hardin's younger brother.

*Crowd whispers among themselves, impressed*

The Scarlet Lion's brother has enlisted?

Now that you mention it, I can see the resemblance.

What, you all knew him?

Leon was an exceptionally gifted cadet, making him something of a celebrity.

I'm Cosette Coalhearth. My hobby is... sewing, I guess? Anyway. hi!

I'm Zeri.

Hey, whoa, is that a Darcsen? What's up with that?

Oof, I don't want anyone bringing misfortune down on us here, dude.

Oh good, we racist up this scene already.

Avan will serve as class chair.

You seriously want me to do it? You think I can?

An ambivalent newcomer is a vast improvement.

Hubert Brixham: Motivational speaker extraordinaire

Isn't that kind of harsh? How does a teacher say that about his own class?!

It's the truth. Lanseal has no need for those cadets unwilling to try. Organizing and outfitting the squad for training exercises will be your job. You'll have to learn the ropes between classes. You set no special allowances.

Well all right! Fine, I'll do it!

You can start right now. The class needs a squad name.

Here at Lanseal, each class is also considered to be a single squad.

Okaaay? I don't really get it, but I can do names!

So I want a name for our ragtag garbage landfill group. The limit is 6 characters, and I want reasons. I don't just want a name, that's lazy. Sell me with propaganda, with reason cause this ain't a vote. This is persuasion, busta.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!
Meet Class G

Well, in a game completely about the cliches, might as well go with the forum cliche as well.

Understood. Then let's begin our lesson. Class, get out your books.

So Avan being the leader means that if he's deployed at the start of a mission, we get 1 extra CP each turn he's on the field. So there's literally no reason not to have him out, unless he's about to die or something.

Titles are what they are. They're just fun adjectives you put before and after the squad title. They don't actually do anything mechanically. Today we got:
-Promising
-Dream
-Light
-Clockwork
-Fairplay
-Elite
-Sprinters

So the next mission is available in the Briefing Room, but there's a bunch of yellow exclamation marks around the school. They're basically side-events, and you can guess what they'll be for newly elected Supreme Leader Avan Hardins.

Dang, the drill ground is huge. Hm? Isn't that...?

Yo, Avon! Used to campus life yet?

Getting there! You guys are all in my class, right?

These guys are Class G's lancers. My name's Reiner Tristan. I enlisted to keep the folks back home safe.

I want this war to end so we can all get back to playing ball already.

I look forward to serving with you!

The rocket lances we use are your best bet against enemy tanks. We also wear heavier armor to shield us from explosions.

Good to know. And good to know I've got you guys in my corner!

Lancers are basically only useful against vehicles. Their rocket launchers heavily damages tanks when they hit the bright blue spot in the back (don't ask), most likely destroying it in one blow. The downside is that Lancers are horrible for anything else, as their aim makes Shocktroopers look like snipers and do meh damage against soldiers.

Their armor is blast-protective, meaning stepping over a mine or being hit by an opposing rocket won't do nearly as much damage. That also means two Lancers can't really kill each other, though getting in that mirror match is dumb to get into the first place.

Wow, the academy's got its own entire hospital.

Mm? Hey, it's the new kid. Over here, Avan!

Yo! You guys are, er....

We're Class G's squad of engineers. My name is Randy Hamsun. I'm just relieved to have the class chair decided. I look forward to great things from you, Avan!

I-I'll try my best not to get in the way!

And I have to say, I'm not impressed. Hayseeds like you aren't my type.

A seductress, I totally did not expect that right away at all

Goddamnit

Ha ha! Poor Magari, she's terribly shy, but she'll warm up to you soon.

I hope so, because that was a more than little awkward.

Anyway, you can count on us engineers for medical support in the field. We can use ragnoid to heal people from afar.

I'll bank on that! Thanks in advance for keeping us all alive!

I already said my peace on Engineers, but if you somehow forgot, it went something like this:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA no

Oh my god there's still 3 more

Ugh, lost again. This stupid campus is way too big!

Yo, Avan! What's up, man?

Hey, you guys are from my class. You're... Who are you again?

I'm Joachim Osen, man! These guys here are all Class G's armored techs.

It'd be great if you remembered me. Or at least just the name.

I look forward to seeing you prove yourself worthy of command.

Pay no mind to me. ...I'm a Darcsen.

drat, so our own class was pulling Darcsen fear right in front of at least two girls.

We are the squad's shield. We can deflect frontal fire without flinching. We're also trained to safely disarm land mines.

And try to remember us next time, man!

Hah, I think I got it. Thanks for the intros. It's good to meet you!

So if you still don't know why I think Engineers are bad, it's because any other relative use they had back in VC1 is now regulated to Armored Techs. Armored Techs are unique in having melee weapons (they basically swing hammers), though they're bad at killing in one turn for the most part. That's basically the worst part about them, is that they're more utility units.

What do they do otherwise? Clean up mines, repair sandbags, still have long-range offense in Grenades, have a Blast suit, and also they have a giant loving shield...that deflects all interception attacks. They are the closest to having unlimited HP if you angle the shield right, though their AP isn't the greatest. If nothing else, they are great Camp capture characters by getting to a place healthy and chucking a grenade to move an enemy out of the way.

So, this is the mess hall! Heh, good, I'm starving.

I'm sorry, what

Oh, I don't like the look of this....

I don't think we've been properly introduced yet, dude. I'm Lanseal's top scoop-hunter, Lotte Netzel!

Um... My sister is a shocktrooper here, too. Nice to meet you...

The thought of serving under your command is... Bah.

Oh, goody

Hee hee...Your back's wide open. Hardins. You could get shot...*vanishes*

What?!

Don't let her get to you, dude. That's just her way of saying hi.

Us scouts are super mobile and we're good at sighting enemies, too.

I'll remember that. It's good to know I've got you guys with me!

Scout is Avan's starting class, and generally do what they're called. They have the highest AP, thus being able to travel the farthest and perfect for Camp hopping.

They're low on defensive stats, but their offense is quite decent. The rifle is good enough to one-turn kill half the enemies, while having range that can allow them to beat Shocktroopers one-on-one at the right distance. They also have grenades. Not as useful as in VC1 because the smaller maps give less advantage for having a large AP pool.

We're almost done here

All right, what was the next class again?

You're Hardins, yes? A moment, please.

Huh? You look familiar...Are you in--?

But I thought I still ought to introduce the class shocktroopers.

Huh. Why does that girl on the left look familiar....

OH NO.

NONONONONONONO

I'm content to welcome you into my horde of adoring fans.

I trust we'll set along famously.

So, are you one of--

Hmph. *Leaves*

And there he goes. That was typical Erik. Erik Kampmann. He can't even spell the word teamwork, and he's always getting in fights.

All right, we can work on that, I guess.

We shocktroopers' stamina and firepower make us the nemeses of foot soldiers. Try to remember that if you have any intention of commanding this squad.

Heh, leave it to me, and I'll leave the firefights to you!

Shocktrooper is what Zeri is, and is basically the best overall anti-soldier character. There are some classes that are better one-turn killers than Shocktroopers, but they combine the decent range, massive firepower, Grenade utility, and above-average defensive stats with decent AP. In this game, they are the jack-of-all trades if you want units to survive and kill really well.

And we are done with meeting all of Class G. That was a thing.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!
The range that a Lancers has to be to reliably headshot a soldier is basically a range even an Engineer can kill, or an Armored Tech can reach. Another advantage I didn't mention for Armored Tech is that their swing covers a 180 arc, so you can hit multiple bunched up units together if the situation arises. Also, their melee destroys sandbags so you can save up your grenades later that turn.

Combat Exercise

So after all that, we're finally getting back into combat again.

Hubert will go over all the character classes you met, basically what I explained last update. Now we have 3 choice available whenever we enter the briefing room.

Change Equipment is just switching gear, not really relevant right now because we still have default stuff. Weapons do branch out that the same classes do want different weapons for different situations, as we'll get farther down this game.

You'll also notice stuff like the stats and Like category. AP is pretty static depending on class, but HP/Shoot/Evade is dependent on the character themselves. Avan is absurdly tanky, having more HP than Zeri. He would make a great Shocktrooper, or could benefit from being in a class that is usually fragile like Engi-pfffft

Like is a minor mechanic, letting characters co-attack more likely with others. Not exactly a deal breaker, as your units will rarely stick that close together to trigger co-attacks. It's more of a personality info thing.

Shooting is how accurate you are, and Evade is the likeliness of dodging an attack from the front. Both ultimately not mattering too much compared to what weapon you have, the distance you are at, and what you're shooting at.

The other character personality thing for gameplay are Potentials. These are special abilities that activate randomly, ranging from a simple firepower boost to getting an extra turn. However, they can also range in negative effects like less evasion and straight up losing a turn.

P Potentials are personal abilities, which have decent stat boosts but also have all the negative effects possibly there like losing a turn.

B Potentials are class based, with the 3rd B a specific sub-class that has to be triggered to learn, and the 4th B being transferable to a different class. Basically if Avan learns the Scout's third ability, he can carry it over to a different class. Keep in mind that the same characters in the exact same class can learn different 3rd abilities, taking it farther in making each character a unique unit.

I'm going to spoil things a bit and tell you that there's a multi-part sidequest ending in a mission for every single character in our squad. There is going to be more than enough time to go over their stats and quirks by then.

Edit Groups is basically useless. In theory it lets you have a prearranged group depending on the mission structure. That sounds useful in VC1 since deploying takes a turn, but since it's instant in VC there's no point. Just deploy Avan, and then deploy whoever once you enter the mission.

So let's to get our first mission as Class G with Combat Exercises.

Pretty simple mission, just kill knock out everyone. Losing condition is our base captured or everyone dies.

So here is where you deploy your troops on the map. This matters a bit more later when you have multiple starting points among other situations, but for the most part just deploy Avan and whoever.

My standard tactic is deploying a bunch of Shocktroopers because they are the best base defenders, and I just replace one of them with an actual unit I need. Saves me CP when I eventually have to protect my base.

One enemy on the screen, so we have to find the rest of the enemies camping somewhere.

Rodriguez chimes in about the Morale bar on the left corner. Basically, killing/capturing/etc. raises it while losing camps and units bring it down. Morale is basically a percentage boost to Potentials activating I.E. high lets good potentials activate more and vice versa. It's a simple momentum mechanic.

Zeri runs ahead to the camp and spots 3 more dudes to kill. Capturing the base raised the morale about halfway, so even more benefits to consider for capturing a base.

An example of Shocktroopers being poo poo at anywhere but close range. I'm pretty sure 19 shots will not travel that far into the guy's head.

This attack doesn't even register as damage, and really most units can't outside of snipers. Do note this enemy has a star above his head, meaning he's a Leader type and gives extra CP like Avan. Not really that important since the AI doesn't use up all their CP on average, but it's there if you need priority targets.

I'm not sure what's with this guy, because he's clearly crouching but doesn't have the insane crouch defense. Another small thing to note is Aim next to the Shots box. You do extra damage if you attack from the side or rear, but not worth it enough to spend extra AP.

So now that I've established a 2nd base, I spam Standby on everyone but Avan so I have 5 free slots to deploy.

Erik is going out to hunt down a target, but unlike Zeri, he faces a crouching enemy that isn't bugged out.

So he eats a grenade instead to blow up cover, then Erik runs back to standby and get a full heal out of it next turn. Efficient!

Jo's going to tag in and finish off the target. Here's an Armored Tech standing in front of a Shocktrooper, not giving a gently caress or taking damage thanks to their shield.

And then uh...another enemy that was shooting nearby team killed the target instead. So I guess that's another tactic for Armored Techs, is to pull off dumb friendly fire shenanigans.

Since Jo didn't attack, he's going to mosey down to a pair of dudes further down the map. You can see the hammer having decent distance and damage, especially against an enemy crouching.

Bombs away!

Nice, the nade killed the non-crouch guy and half-damaged the other one. Super efficient.

Since Jo's almost out of AP, I'm just going to super distract the surviving guy so the next Goon gets a side damage bonus.

Small gameplay tidbit #493, retreating to base outside of a base aura costs 1 CP to do. Makes hit-and-runs slightly more costly to do.

Avan cleans up the team killing moron from the rear. Not really that big of a bonus, since 2 headshots kill anyway at this point.

By the way, Armored Techs get anti-vehicle bonuses like Lancers because...sure? They are hammering the blue spot on a tank, I guess.

This is actually dangerous because Jo is in range. A grenade would be much safer to use since Techs have Blast Armor.

Huge range, as you can see. Almost one-shot Jo, too.

Another 1-turn mission, kinda odd the first mission at the academy was the hardest in getting A rank.

gently caress YOU

...I mean, here are material items you need to do multiple things like create weapons, make temporarily buffs, and change class. TOTALLY NOT A GRIND AT ALL, NOPE

Oh wait, grind items are specific to characters that were in the mission instead of being a universal currency??? My favorite type of distribution!!!

You go to Avan's room after every mission, but it's not like say Persona where sleeping takes up a day slot. The story doesn't progress until you play those progression missions, so there's no time limit if you want to do side stuff.

Yearbook is just recapping scenes from earlier in the game, set up like VC1's storybook setup.

People list is an updating list of their biography, with info that will add on to it as the story/sidequests progresses.

The notable thing is that academy groups aren't seperated by age at all. The range in class G is between 16-20, with some exceptions.

A couple interesting facts. He's the oldest by far at 27, and apparently the Empire's been doing an exchange program as part of the peace treaty I guess.

You can rename your squad at anytime, so Goon isn't forever if you're wondering. I did mention titles as add-ons to the squad name, as you can see.

There's like 30 pages of titles, and is basically useless outside of online multiplayer.

Time to sleep, save, and get on with the other mission.

Shopping and Exercise

More options in the academy opens up, along with extra tutorial notes as a reminder.

The Drill Grounds is possibly the most important thing for the combat preparation of battles. This is where you level up your classes (I.E. all Scouts get stat boosts per level), and changing classes.

Each class can reach a maximum of level 25, with EXP varying. The game thinks Shocktroopers are the best, while Engineers are so bad they get the pity bar of requiring less than 4 digits worth of EXP.

Promotion in VC2 is divided into branches of sub-classes into more sub-classes. The Scout class for example can go into a Scout Veteran which leads into more Scoutish classes, or a Sniper (Yeah, it's a sub-class. Boooo) with further Sniper class options.

Shocktroopers divide into stronger troopers or the Gunner sub-class, which are basically super defensive classes mainly for defending camps. Basically a waste of space.

Lancers can become stronger, faster vehicle killers or become basically super dedicated grenade launchers with mortar weapons. These weapons are decent against infantry, but are poo poo against vehicle, making them essentially bad grenaders you wasted upgrade stuff on.

Engineers can become stronger versions of themselves, which means they can heal better! Yeah! Also revive characters! Hey, where are you going

Also, they can become Anthem Corps which are basically buff and debuff classes. No, buff and debuff are two separate classes, why would they be the same?? Don't you just want to use up your Engineers so they can be these amazing new classes????

Techs can either become better versions with super strong mines or smoke grenades to prevent interception fire. The other choice is to become Fencers, arguably the best class in the game at killing things and surviving. They have pretty low AP, but can kill most things in one hit including crouchers, and have a big rear end shield to be immune from bullets.

Downside is that Fencers lose the ability to disable mines or repair sandbags, but you get a one-shot killing machine in return I guess.

Wow, all of that sounds great. Clearly we just have to level up our classes to eventually get to the promotions, right?

NOPE. You see that Arms thing under Credits? You need materials and specific certificate arms to qualify for the items, and as I mentioned, those characters have to actively kill/capture in missions to acquire the material. Also the items are random to whoever is given to it per mission.

YEP.

R+D is where you buy weapons, upgrade them, and some other stuff that will be unlocked later.

Weapon buying is pretty linear for the most part. Get upgrades, bigger numbers, etc. Choices branch depending on special properties of weapons but right now it's just a choice to upgrade rifles.

Nice thing about buying upgrades is that it lets you equip it on all the classes, so no spending 30 minutes equipping the new stuff. Negative is that you have to re-equip any weapons you do want to stay equipped, like a special weapon but eh.

When certain levels of an item are bought, special versions of the weapons appear. Right now, this X-1 rifle can only be revealed once we beat some enemy Ace called Cindy.

The only other new item is armor but we're low on money, so we'll get that later.

A level into Scout and Shocktroopers since they're the most useful in most situations, especially scouts since we just got them a new rifle.

You can replay key missions for extra money, EXP, materials, etc. But today is a new mission.

This one's a capture mission with with just 1 map. Pretty simple, probably just use Scouts a lot.

That bridge-like thing on the map is a barrier, so we have to go the long way around.

Sight lines are those visual lines coming from the enemy heads, looking at you. Not really that complicated, except to slowly approach during a blue line until it changes, then go into aim mode to prevent a counter attack.

Crawling in the grass is a decent move for us and the most goddamn annoying thing for the enemies to do. If you're in grass, you go into a crawl position and basically invisible to the enemy unless you're really close to them.

It's annoying for us because enemies are completely invisible until we get in the same melee distance, AND it counts as a crouching defensive bonus. The only way for classes like Scouts or Shocktroopers to force enemies out of the grass is a grenade. Lancers at least can pop them out with their rockets.

As for Engineers....

Uh, hey look! Zeri's murdering someone!

Land mines are very dangerous if you're not wearing a blast suit like Lancers or Armored Techs. They deal an insane amount of damage if you run over them, and propel you at a distance, possibly into enemy fire.

Avoid them or have your Armored Tech disable them (this doesn't use up your turn). Small mines deal big damage to soldiers and little to vehicles, large mines are vice versa.

Avan murders a couple dudes as he gets deep into enemy territory. Not exactly my style to rush all in like this, but the missions are still tutorial and enemies still barely scratch Avan.

Watchtowers are mostly a sniper benefit, as they're the only ones that can really make use out of the higher elevation bonuses beyond the immediate area. You climb up via the circle button when you're nearby a ladder.

Avan learns a new Potential, which is random as I mentioned before. Clear Though raises Status Ailment...so basically he didn't learn anything.

Avan kills a couple more and captures the camp in 2 turns. He's very happy, you see.

I'm not going to list the grind items because ultimately it's all going to be grinded out a billion times.

Next time we're going to actually progress the story. Or uh..."story," thus far.

Man, I have so many questions on this logic...

But wait, you can't mean--Are you saying that we cadets are expected to fight unassisted?

I am Zeri, apparently.

That is correct.

The Militia can only be summoned against invasion. This is internal. That leaves you cadets. The creme de la cremeeof Gallia's youth.

OKAY. So I get why the military would be unable to fight off another war. But then he just goes "No, they wouldn't fight anyway because it's an internal affair." So either we have the most badass single Academy (that's one, one academy in the entire country) that is staving off an entire southern half of the country of Rebel faction. Except we will soon see the Rebels are far more equipped and advanced than the Empire did back in VC1, so....?????

Why do I smell a Lancer tutorial coming up....

I expect you to win. Thinking of how to so about that is your job.

That's easy for you to say! Their lives are all hanging on this!

Such is the nature of war. The exact same applies to the rebels as well. If you don't wipe them out, they'll gladly see you dead.

Because they have the DUMBEST hats

Treated like objects, just because they're Darcsens...

Hey! We've got an incoming rebel squad!

We'll never make it against a group that big. We're all gonna die.

You're a goddamn Armored Tech, Morris. You are severely equipped to tank a tank

Okay, everybody calm down! We'll all be fine. It'll work out, don't worry.

"It'll work out"? How can you say that with no grounds to back it up?

"The most violent waves lay bore a man's worth the fastest"

I think Leon wrote that while he was drunk

Those are my brother's words. New listen good--you give up and it's over. And if I know anything, it's that we weren't meant to die here today. That means we can't give up, which means we fight! Those are my grounds.

I like how none of this long setup involved just saying to save the Darcens.

You're right. Right, everybody? We can do this, together! It's like Avon says. So long as we don't give up, there's still hope. Combat is scary, but... We all have to do our part for any of us to survive.

Just how exactly is that speech supposed to get us through this alive? An appeal to emotion and some circular reasoning? You've got to be kidding.

So. what? You have a better plan, dude?

That's probably at the top of their chain of command, issuing orders. Destroy that tank, and you behead the squad.

So Zeri kindly sat through that long rear end speech about nothing, while he was figuring out how to blow up a tank. I think Avan indirectly got a few more Darcens killed with that speech's length.

B-but how?

There.

Right. I saw several of them littered about the area. Fueling stations for the villagers’ farm equipment, I'd wager. If we lure the tank near those containers, then set them off with gunfire...

That's perfect! We can use the blast to take out the tank!

Zeri, you're a genius!

Observation and logic will always yield a solution. Those are my grounds.

So now we're going to save the Darcens, right?

Nope.

Avan's going to change to a Shocktrooper since he's already learned basic Scout's Potential. Also level up Armored Tech just cause.

And another free mission pops up. The Darcen/Rebel thing will be frozen forever in time until we select it, so Avan can just do a quick skirmish and sleep before the real story battle.

Just a regular kill-everyone type mission, with 2 maps connecting to each other.

This mission is the first to let us deploy units from a different spawn point. The 2nd deployment is tricky because it's not on a base, so choosing units for those spots actually matter a lot.

Lotte and Zeri shoot a couple dudes down to start things off.

Meanwhile, Avan is taking care of his side by shooting and grenading. Grenades one-shot kill crouchers in this mission, so this is going to go a lot quicker than normal.

Or it could be those drilling ground levels working, because Armored Techs one-shotting is not a common sight.

Rest of the map is pretty standard sight-kill, except a couple of enemies are hiding in the grass. Grenades one-shot them for now though, so it's not that bothersome.

Helmut is voiced by Steve Blum because of course.

3 Turns for getting an A. Still can't afford that new armor though....

Lancers get a level up since we're facing a tank next turn. Now it's time to turn in and sleep and get back to that frozen village to save!

Just like the civil war in America, it is not not-racists vs. racists, it is less-racist vs. super-racist. Liberating Arlem

Alright, time to actually save the Darcsens. Most story missions will have mandatory deployment, which is kinda annoying when some of them are in non-camp deployment spots.

Mission's a 3-map layout, with ragna crates being a special item introduced. These things can be destroyed with gunfire, and the explosion deals a lot of damage to anything in the immediate area.

Zeri and Cosette are forced deployed on the 1st map, while Avan is forced on map 3.

This is the first map to introduce multiple camp gates to the same area. Map 1 leads to a more frontal assault to map 4 with the tank ready to attack, while map 3's camp gate leads behind enemy lines.

Lots of soldiers defending the front Camp Gate, possibly more that's out of sight once we get closer.

This is the map that contains the tank hidden here. The Camp Gate on the bottom is Zeri and Cosette's target, while the one behind a building is Avan's.

Avan's journey looks easier, but obviously there's a bunch of enemies between him and the enemy base. At least he's a Shocktrooper so he can take any abuse head-on fine.

Yep.

Oh dear, this will take a bit of extra elbow grease for Avan.

Avan explodes a commander's cover and gets into camp himself to set up for a bunch of counterattack kills.

Zeri travels through the grass to avoid interception fire, but even then when spotted gets a big defensive boost.

Now, time to blow up the container for a cool explosive kill!

...Huh

...really

So that was 4 CP well spent. At least he...captured a base?

A really good enemy turn for us. About 5 killed during counterattacks, making the next turn an easier path to capture.

Avan captures the backend Camp Gate at the start of turn 2.

Now we'll compare the front entrance vs. the back.

Jo throws a nade to clear out the back entrance, and you can see how miniscule the damage a grenade does to him from the splash back.

Jo uses his remaining AP to scout ahead and spot 3 enemies guarding the bridge. Most direct paths will be like this, heavily guarded compared to the alternate entrance.

Eh, Helmut will try to go through the front anyway and least locates the tank we have to destroy. He notches a quick kill before getting back to a sandbag for defense.

Since I have until the end of turn 3 to destroy the tank, I'm just going to spend some excess on killing stuff for class materials. MIGHT AS WELL.

"You chose Engineer? Here, have lowered weapon accuracy for the turn! Bwuahahahha" -Valkyria Chronicles 2

The enemy's turn rolls around, and the tank spots Helmut. I'm sure he's fine, though. He's crouching and tanks have poo poo aim from long dista

poo poo

Well uh...I did that on purpose you see! To show you that hospitalize costs 2 CP...yeah

Okay, just gonna not mess around anymore and end the mission. Lancers deal immense damage to vehicles with their rocket launchers, but hitting the blue radiator is basically a one-shot kill.

Oh yeah, Zeri's plan was something about the raditor boxes...hmm. Weird, I thought there would be a Lancer tutorial or at least one about the blue radiator.

So if you hadn't noticed, doing any extra things that doesn't involve doing the objective faster (capturing a base) is basically a pittance of money and EXP.

I still can't believe we really beat the rebels all by ourselves.

We did it, Avan!

Course we did! I told you guys we could do this! And thanks, Zeri.

For what?

I never would have come up with that plan. You saved the day, man.

The plan we never used. :ssh:

I just offered a bit of logic. You might try it yourself sometime.

Don't you start, now. It's Class G's first victory! How's about a smile? *Portrait constantly bumps up to Zeri*

Wha--? Stop that! Get your muddy mitts off my face!

*both portraits constantly rubbing against Zeri*

No! S-Stop it. Cosette! Enough already, you two!

*Moments later*

I'm pleased to see your first operation end in success, Avan. Class G, you are clear to return to Lanseal.

Roger that. All right guys, time to go home!

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!
The problem with Engineers and specifically Cosette is that, in a game all about CP efficiency to get the best grade, buffing and debuffing is mediocre to bad when very rarely do you have a bunched up group.

If this was a game that rewarded kills over speed, she'd be....well, still not useful because VC2's whole Retreat/Standby system is more than enough healing. Healing vehicles is probably the only other time you'll use them, and only if they're nearby a base.

And of course, the biggest reason not to bother with Engineers is because of how the class upgrade system works and the grind it would take to have one promote 2 tiers, while there is actual benefit to having different branches of Scouts, Shocktroopers, and Armored Techs.

Did I mention Avan has to go through the upgrade path every time he switches classes? So if you change your mind about Avan while he's in a 3rd tier, guess what.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

After liberating a village and preventing the daily genocide, February rolls around to commence more stuff to do. A LOT of stuff to do.

The leva-what now?

A tournament, Cosette. Classes face each other in mock combat. It's a good test of class performance, and one of Lanseal's oldest traditions.

That sounds pretty cool.

Oh, it sounds like a real blast. I can"t wait to lose miserably.

Seriously, bro. How's a guy supposed to fight if he knows he can't win?

I just want to point out that these people are more worried of a mock battle tournament than fighting a rebellion that is sweeping the nation with genocidal tenancies.

*avan goes into deep thought*

lf we win, the rest of the academy will have to respect us. Right?

That'd sure be nice. Yeah! So long as we're in it, let's go for the top!

There's no sense in competing otherwise. This once, I'll agree with you.

Heh heh. Well. I have a little present for you in light of your optimism. Head down to the R&D building to collect it.

Well that's nice of Hubert. Maybe it's a new gun, or some free armor!

 Yes, Avan. Hubert sent you to pick up a machine gun sandwich.

Oh, wow. You're the chair of Class G. kid?

What? Oh, you're the girl who's always in here, huh?

What?! Hey!

Anyway, my name's Lavinia. Lavinia Lane. I'm Class G's tank Pilot.

Tank pilot? Wait, we have a tank?!

And where the gently caress was this last mission???

There's that intelligence again. Heh. Every class here gets one tank. I hear a lot of rumors about you Class G kids. None of 'em are good.

Gah! Fine, all right! Well, my name is Avan Hardins. Nice to meet ya.

Hardins? As in...Never mind. Anyway, best of luck and all that.

I guess first off the tank'll be needing a name.

What, I get to name it?

Hey, you're the chair. Just try not to pick anything dumb, okay?

I make no promises

Okay! We'll go with that!

All right. You got any questions about the tank, you come ask me. Got it?

Got it. Thanks, Lavinia!

So we just got a tank and pilot for it. I think that helps a bit for the tournament, maybe.

Revisiting the R&D unlocks something else as well.

Huh? What's up?

I've been analyzing data from Class G...And I figured out how to develop a new weapon.

Are you serious, Lavinia? Man, we'll be unstoppable now!

Yay, more stuff to grind to....

Finally can afford the next armor, despite that it's only 1 more point of front defense. At least it makes frontal approaches easier, especially for Avan who's already probably the tankiest outside of Armored Techs.

Mod Vehicle option is the meat of the mech options. Body is the base of the vehicle, mainly choosing between tanks and APCs. There are different tiers of each type of vehicle, but we'll get to that when it's available.

Tanks are basically super combat units, with huge defense and firepower that take up 2 CP to use. Efficiency-wise, not that great at first for killing purposes but they have a few benefits.

Pro's
1) Most of the body is basically the Armored Tech's shield, being immune to most infantry fire.
2) Vehicles can knock down soldiers and some obstacles, mainly useful for knocking down sandbags and forcing crawlers in grass to get up.
3) Tanks can be makeshift covers to let more fragile units like Scouts get in to capture bases.
4) Can run over and trigger the smaller mines for virtually no damage, like Lancers.

Con's
1) Lowish AP, since terrain can slow down tanks
2) Being hit in the blue radiator is almost instant kill
3) Cannot capture bases
4) Does not heal every turn unless within a base aura
5) Cannot climb ladders
6) Cannot be deployed on every mission

Other than that, 90% of the time they're just the best combat units.

APCs are an entirely different brand from tanks. They have the ability to carry units, effectively making low AP units like Lancers and Fencers into high mobility units. The downside to carry is that a destroyed APC hospitalizes everyone inside, which is important to remember because APCs are a hell lot weaker than tanks.

You can see by the red and blue numbers compared to a tank. 1 CP is insane for such a super high AP unit (our Scouts right now have 450), and having Off-Road means it doesn't lose AP when traveling off pavement.

Tank turrets usually usually have a mix of ammo types. Anti-Armor is the Lancer rocket ammos, Mortar are basically grenades, and Gatling is the Shocktrooper machinegun. Well kinda, this one only shoots 7 times.

Now the T-MAG is a real machinegun, shooting 30 times and having an A in Suppression (counterattack ability). The downside is that it is only useful for fighting soldiers.

Shoulder, Armor, and Backpack are support items you can attach to your vehicle. They range from making the turret spin faster to counterattack better to making bridges on specific maps.

Markings and Stickers are basically stat bonuses for the tank, ranging from less visibility during certain terrain to anti-personal bonuses.

Right next to Total are 2 blue filled spaces and 2 blank ones. That indicates the weight system VC2 uses to balance out what turret and extra parts you can equip. So some missions you would want the best turret and ignore extra stuff, sometimes you equip the T-MAG because you need space to build a bridge or make things brighter during night missions.

Switching to the APC forces any parts that don't fit it removed, as you can see the Gatling Turret on the top.

That's the basics of it, but there will be a lot more options in the future to talk about.

I'm not a fan of messy social situations, so just leave me in peace.

When I get caught, I'll give myself up before they shoot me.

I'll prep in advance for interviews when we break our record for worst loss!

Good thinking! That will help things so a lot more smoothly, Lotte.

A-All right, you guys. Let's try our best to meet these new goals!

I'll keep my beloved safe from harm.

Why do we have to enter? All we're going to do is lose.

It wasn't thirty seconds into the last scrimmage with Class C I was shot. It's hard to get motivated to face that again.

That was an embarrassment to the entire class. You should be ashamed!

Ha ha! Don’t be such a pack of pessimists, guys. If we keep training, we'll have a shot at winning! Let's stay positive.

You really think so? I can't imagine us winning at anything.

Me either.

GREAT. Real group of winners here. We're going back to the dormitory for a different cutscene.

Alright, the question mark worries me a little.

...We have a mountain?

Ha ha! There's no point in coming to a snow-capped mountain in summer! At least we got off campus. Try to enjoy the trip!

This is not a trip. dear!

I'm with you, dude. Running makes me tired, and that makes me angry.

Ooh! How about we be marathon buddies, dude? Having company for the run would make it feel a lot shorter!

I'm so dreadfully slow, though. I wouldn't want to hold you back, darling.

Aww, who cares? We're friends, aren't we? Let's head for that finish line together!

Aww. Lotte! That sounds lovely. Thank you, dear.

The last ten to finish get twenty laps around the drill ground back home!

Uh...

On your mark, get set, move your rears!

Er, sorry, Anisette! That's about 19 laps too many, dude! *runs away*

Lotte! You... You turncoat! Get back heeeere!

So that was a thing.

Raymond's portrait carefully and slowly went up to Randy here.

Ha ha ha! Whoops! I guess you did.

So... this exercise ends when you've caught all of us enemy units, right? Aren't I the last one?

We still need Melissa. The scouts are doing their best, but there's no sign of her yet.

Sh-She's really fast.

Yes... There've been times when she's been standing suddenly next to me.

0-One night, I turned around in the gym and she was there. I f-fainted.

Every human being makes some noise. Their presence can always be detected. If she's silent, she's probably a corpse or a demon.

*rustling noise*

Hrr...?!

M-Melissa! I found you!

Tee hee. You took too long, Raymond. I got bored.

I didn't hear a thing, but she didn't look dead.

Did we really need a whole scene to get across "Melissa is really creepy and good at being invisible?"

Do you ever stop eating?

Food gimmicks are the worst. Unless the Rebels have a base core that Avan has to eat to prevent an explosion, it's just lazy writing that doesn't end up anywhere.

*another stomach growls*

...Ha ha. Guess I'm pretty hungry, too.

Ugh.

Well, I know there's a campus store. Want to so check it out?

*moments later*

Everything from textbooks to personal hygiene... Impressive.

!!!!

Ooh, that smells amazing! Sign me up! *takes a bite* Augh, this is AWESOME! You're killing me here!

Hee hee. I just got my certification, but I stand by my bread.

I didn't know the school store ran a bakery. This is great!

I just opened shop here today. Come on by anytime you want a snack.

Hey, Alicia. Here are those sourdough rolls.

I got waylaid by a ruby swallowtail. They only live here in the south...

Oh, that figures! Honey, my first customers are here waiting.

Wait, Alicia and Welkin? Why does that sound familiar?

Y-You're... the heroes of the last war. You drove back the Empire! You're Lieutenant Welkin Gunther and Sergeant Alicia Melchiott!

Ha ha! I think you might be exaggerating a bit, but yes. I'm Welkin Gunther.

I retired from the militia so I'm not a lieutenant anymore, though.

And my name is Alicia Gunther now.

Gunther? Then the two of you are...?

And how did two decorated heroes come to be here at Lanseal?

I took up teaching. My first placement is in a town not far from here. Alicia and I just moved down south from Bruhl.

And the headmaster is letting me sell my bread here at the shop.

You guys are so lucky down here. Even just counting beetles, the diversity...The other day I went bug- watchins at noon, and next thing I knew it was dark!

At no point stopping to think of your wife, who was worried sick!

Ha ha! Sorry about that. Ooh, the next batch should be Just about done now.

Right. Well, drop by again soon, kids. I'll have some fresh bread waiting.

And if you ever have any questions, I'm always happy to answer them!

*both leave the area*

And I had no idea heroes knew how to bake bread, too. Maybe I should start!

Maybe you should stop. Really, just... stop.

SO. Goddamn Alicia and Welkin appear because why not. I'm assuming nobody officially knows Alicia is a Valkyrur, since anyone that got close to her is dead or part of Squad 7 who don't snitch. Welkin not being mobbed by everyone is weird since he literally saved the entire country from domination, but I can understand Cordelia's Darcsen reveal overshadowing his spotlight.

Revisiting the store opens up the possibility of Welkin occasionally stopping by with new Orders. Orders are basically spells that Avan can use to cast special effects, like a defense boost, ammo refill, accuracy boost, etc for CP. They were borderline overpowered in VC1 because Orders like defense boost basically made a unit invincible for a whole turn, for 1 CP.

Welkin currently only has Medic Request, which is basically the act of rescuing with a unit. Not really that useful unless you have a very specialized unit and they aren't near a base for emergency rescue.

So here's a secret: Avan had the ability to cast an Order this whole time, but I haven't used it and will never use it ever. Why?

Because it cost loving 4 CP! Apparently Sega decided to nerf Orders to the ground as a balance thing, so they are essentially useless because they are way too expensive to ever see practical use.

So anyway, we're back in class.

Coleen? Care to take a stab?

Sorry, Professor... I don't know.

Be sure to do all the assigned reading before class, hm? ...Anisette?

Anisette! What is that you're writing? Let's have a look.

"Dear Sister. Last night's concert was packed to bursting..."

If you have the time to hold imaginary concerts, you can do the reading.

Y-Yes, sir.

Joachim, can you help them out?

Q=Vlt!

Joachim. The Physics lesson ended about an hour ago.

Ugh, seriously?!

BioMe posted:

Personally I still don't get why people are complaining about this game trying to reach critical mass of anime cliches. As far as I can see that's the only direction they could have taken this. Anything else would've been half assed.

That's the same line of lazy thinking that the writers probably took, make it extremely safe compared to VC1 or 3. There's not even big, sweeping changes that would make VC2 tonally consistent or not tiring, which are its biggest problems.

A large problem of the early game is the cognitive dissonance between "plucky failure class to win respect" and "Oh poo poo, there's a civil war involving genocide." A simple rewrite of the rebel army not attacking until like a few months into Avan entering the academy would solve that, instead of rebels randomly attacking and then stopping (spoilers: The most rebel action we see this month is one side mission).

The other problem is bloat on characteristics and scenes repeating over and over again. Raymond is meek, Melissa is a creepy shadow, Morris is a coward, etc. for 3-4 cutscenes in barely 2 chapters. You can have one-note gimmicks and do it well, this is the opposite and beating you in the head over it too fast.

And that's not even the problem of gimmicks, is that some characters have too many gimmicks each. Dumb, hick protagonists aren't bad, especially in a setting when you need someone too dumb to challenge Class A with a bunch of rejects. It's adding on a hungry gimmick, a big brother gimmick, and a bad cook gimmick. And then repeating cutscenes about it in the almost exact same fashion again and again and again.

There was potential there, just like anything, with a couple changes to give a little leeway before it hits "Peek anime" or whatever. You can hit peek anime all you want as long as you're tonally consistent.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!
VC1 and VC3 had a very simple thing that VC2 failed to do, which was escalation of threat. You are at near the start of the war in VC1 and VC3, you are in the middle of one in VC2, yet treated like the Rebels just started up instead of having been a constant threat in-game, with even less military might than before.

Make no mistake, the real reason why I hate VC2 is because of the mechanical changes. Regardless of all the stuff about story and tone, loving grinding material just to make a goddamn gun, having promotional items be based on random MVP and being random itself, a class being useless 90% of the time in Engineers, and Orders essentially not existing because they are over-costed with a super small max deployment limit is why this game is the worst in the franchise.

Nicol Quest 1

Ngwaugh?!

Oof... Oh, hey, Nichol. I'm real sorry about that! Are you okay, man?

...Yes, I'm fine.

I wasn't paying attention at all. Did I hurt you?

No, I'm all right.

You seem down, man. Are you getting enough to eat? You need some protein!

Protein. I see. I'll remember that.

Gah, this conversation is totally stilted.

Uhh, so yeah! Your sister is in our class too, right? What's that like? Are you glad to know somebody's got your back?

Something...like that.

Nicohl! *runs up to them* So this is where you've been. Just shooting the breeze, were you?

Franca...

I said to hurry back to class, didn't I? Why can't you ever follow through?

I'm sorry....

You've always been this way. No matter what I ask, you can't get it done. At this rate, you'll be a useless man all your life. You should be ashamed.

Whoa, Franco! That's going a little far, isn't it? I was the one who stopped Nichol. Don't heap it all on him, okay?

It's a fine nuisance when you put on your chair act and meddle with a family.

Chair act? Hey, I'm trying as hard as I--

Avan, Please. It's fine.

But she's not--

Nichol, get a move on. And stop shuffling your feet when you walk! *leaves*

Those two are siblings? They're dead opposites.

I don't know how he puts up with that harpy. I'd have hung myself by now. Yeesh, I'm lucky to have had Leon as a brother.

I think Franca might have some issues, but who knows. Maybe Nichol is some super secret abusive person that has to be kept in line???

Hey look, actual missions. Don't worry about what Hubert is saying, he's just telling you the minimum missions amount needed to progress to the story. You can also flip between months for free mission if a particular one is better for grinding.

This is a simple mission, just kill everything and learn to use the APC.

The map starts off with 2 Scouts and an APC, with more to come once we pass the halfway mark.

I'm currently targeting Cosette for Carry, which is a free action like climbing ladders. The APC is essentially portable base for deployment, though the limit is 2 for this vehicle.

Scouts and APC turrets are probably the weakest pellets in the game, but they're still doing a decent dent on the APC. They are not invincible like tanks against bullets. Also, watch out for that mine in front of the enemy APC.

That goes the same for the enemy as well. 20 hits overkill when I'm not even hitting the blue spot.

The rest of the enemies appear on the left, with another APC to destroy.

Remember that you can also use the Carry function in Command mode, though the range is shorter than a base's aura.

You can see the benefit of an APC here, allowing Avan and Cosette to save CP and AP fatigue by traveling with Lavinia.

And that's about it. Here's a picture of Cosette shooting someone.

Another 1 turn mission. Small note, Lavinia obviously doesn't get promotional marks because she's a tank pilot.

Eh, one more for today.

Mind sharing what you bought?

"At Yearning's End." "A Forest of Pining" and "Love At War."

W-Wow. those all sound like... like romance novels or something.

So they are. From three authors popular among female readers today. Claudine Gide, Manoel Ronnins, and the rising star on the scene, Nadine.

Seriously? Wow, I just assumed they'd be academic works. Non-fiction...

l can understand any scholarly dissertation after only one reading.

Multiple readings offered no insights, so I'm making a formal study of it.

I... I see. Well. good luck with that.

Thank you. Good day, Zeri. *leaves*

Who didn't see this coming.

Let's meet Class G: Nichol Martin

Nichol is a bit of an oddball when comparing his stats to what his story is. Story-wise, he's going to be held up as some sort of super sniper that matches legends, but he's kinda low on the accuracy side. Off our current scouts, only Helmut has a lower Shoot rating while the 3 female Scouts have 20+.

He also has the 2nd highest HP of the natural Scouts, 2nd again to Helmut. You're going to find this a constant, because there seems to be a universal trend that Females have better Shoot/lower HP while Males are vice versa.

Personal Potentials:
Night Vision: Accuracy unaffected by night status
Indecisive: Too many enemies around lowers accuracy
Frail Body: At half AP or lower, defense is lowered

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!

Leveling up has another benefit of learning new Orders...you know, if Orders were worth a drat. Evade Boost increases the chance of dodging counterattacks, which sounds okay but not for 4 CP.

While leveling everyone up to level 3, Armored Techs give the Defense Boost Order. A really absurd spell back in VC1 that made even Scouts invincible against interception fire, not here where 4 CP is over half the deployment slots.

Classroom

Oof, my head's gonna blow if I try to cram another fact in there today!

This, from the guy who slept through class. And snored incessantly. I'll--

*sounds of fluttering suddenly interrupted*

Whu-waugh! B-Bird alert, dude! A bird Just flew in through the window!

Hee hee... It's all round and cute.

Ooh, a bird? Really?! I want to see, too! Where is it?

Cosette, darling! You simply can't stand on a desk, it's dangerous!

Mm?

Um, you know this bird, Avan?

Know him? He was my pal back at home! Leon and I found him with a busted wing and nursed him back to health. He's been my bud ever since. Right, Jarde?

Goodness, there seems to be something in the tube strung around his neck.

Ooh, a letter from Mom. Let's have a look... "I hope this finds you well. Jarde's been lonely since you left, so I'm sending him along to you. Try not to fight too much. And don't over eat like you do. Love, Mom."

Your family's from Heathern, right? So he flew all the way here?

Crazy, right? Yeah, he's always been super good at finding me.

A Gallian swift. They're fairly rare across the Europan continent. Their strong homing sense has led to their frequent use as carrier birds.

Wow, you sure know lot about birds, Zeri! Is that a hobby of yours?

I started reading up when I heard that Lieutenant Gunther was a naturalist,

That's a great idea. Caring for animals can be very therapeutic.

I-I'll be responsible for his food and water!

Bweep!

Sounds like he's down! Thanks, you guys.

Yaaay! Good to have you in our class, Jarde!

Bweep!

THIS BIRD WILL UNITE CLASS G TO VICTORY...I guess

We're doing drills at the village we liberated. Um...that doesn't sound right.

This mission is about night time negative effects, which is lowering accuracy and sighting. You could attach a lamp to the tank to counteract it but eh, it doesn't really matter for the most part.

When you can deploy a vehicle, they have a designated spot that's usually in front of the main base. There's also a 2nd deployment group on a different map for 4 units.

One of all the important classes to cover our bases here.

The objective for this mission is to capture the orange base on the 2nd map.

Jo scouted forward to tank what's up ahead, only to realize that was a bad idea because there's a piece of wood blocking his way. At least he exploded a guy for his trouble.

So apparently this 2 turn A rank mission can be won in 3 turns with Zeri. Awkward.

With that in mind, I just putted around and killed stuff before ending the mission.

A bit anti-climatic. Feel bad for those that wasted money on a Lamp for this mission.

Usually you have to get in mad trouble to be here. Whoa! Check this throne!

Ugh, it's still a pain. I just want to go home. It's not even that dirty. Who'd know if we just left it like this?

Y-You guys, come on... We'll get in trouble if we don't do it right.

*thunderous noise*

Ugh, Franca?! N-No, man, we're doing it! The floor's spotless!

Are you blind? You should be ashamed! That corner has cobwebs, there are prints on that vase. Carpet lint, people!

Th-There's no need to go that crazy cleaning!

Dirt in a room is dirt on the soul! I'm not leaving until this place shines! And you had best believe that none of you will, either.

Aaaaack!

Forget this!

I told you guys we'd get in trouble...

...What was the point of that.

Joachim Quest 1

Sounds like somebody's having a meltdown in the courtyard.

*scene change*

What are you moaning about now, Joachim? I could hear you echoing down the hall.

Avan, man! You gotta hear about this day of mine. The worst day EVER!

Um, sure. I'm game. Lay it on me, man.

So this morning, I notice I forgot somethingm so I head back to my room.

Okay?

As I passed the mess hall, the lunch ladies are trying out a new dish. So they see me, and they make me eat a ton. Like a TON of this stew.

Wait, how is that bad? That sounds awesome!

How is that awesome?! I had a stomach ache, and they fed me so much! I was in bad shape after that, man. Real bad! And THEN this chick from Class D asks me to to out on a date with her.

Well, that's good, right? Good for you, man.

Good? Good?! Are you crazy or something?! She was all wrong for me! If I'm gonna go out with a girl, she's gotta have braids and a long skirt. She'll be demure and rich and she'll do anything to make me happy!

wow, gently caress this guy

And that's not even all of it!

*time passes*

Yeaaah, I don't really get it, man. Everything you just told me sounds great to me.

Gah! You really don't set it at ALL, do you, man? Being saddled with friends like you settles it. I'm the unluckiest guy ever!

You're a complicated man, Joachim.

Needs to be severely punched in the face, multiple times

Oooh, a story progression.

Mm? What's up, Rene?

We, uh... We kinda lost Jarde.

It's barely been a day....

We've split up to look for him, but we haven't had any luck so far.

Guess I'm not the only one who gets lost on this campus.

If he is lost, he must be frightened. Will you help us look for him?

Yeah, I bet he'd come if you called him!

All right, I'm on it. Heh, so much for those amazing homing instincts.

*sounds of bweep from afar*

That sounds like Jarde! It's coming from that direction. *runs to the sound*

Jarde, is that you? Answer if you can hear me! *hears Bweep* Over that way! *runs again*

Bweep!

Jarde?! Hey! What gives, man?! Let him go!

You're back, Mama! Did you finish your errand?

I did, though it went 18 minutes over schedule.

Uh...okay?

I dunno man. Valkyria Chronicles 2

Meet Class G: Joachim Osen

Nothing much to be said of him as a unit, since Armor Tech don't rely on Shoot for attacking. He has the 2nd highest HP among current ATs, and his deal is that he's extremely lucky but a stupid idiot for not appreciating it.

Personal Potentials
Impatient - Hiding from view causes them to quickly get antsy, lowering their defense.
Youngest Child - They feel left out when they are the last one to take action, lowering firing accuracy and defense.
Luck-Pusher - Stays positive even when surrounded by enemies, raising defense.

Skits and Squad missions are in their own little bubble. Skits are basically random whenever you play a mission or even turn on the game, they are so non-committal because they can happen any time.

Now if you're asking why they are so many, gently caress man I dunno. It's not like they're lacking in the content department if they remove at least half the skits.

Finally buying that mission, slightly better weapons can wait later. Might as well buy some new lore as well.

Rebels On Move in South Gallia-Newspaper
Rebel forces declared on the 3rd they have taken control of the city of Gote in southern Gallia. The rebels have escalated their attacks in this area since late last year. While they were repelled at Mellvere, almost all of Gote was captured within 10 days.

The rebels have gained a strong foothold in southern Gallia, and offensives on other cities are expected. The government commented that the rebel aggression will not go unanswered, stating that Gote will be retaken in a matter of days.

Oh yeah, that rebel thing. I wonder if that's important or something. Oh well, not as important as this Levi ton cup or something.

Laevatein Cup Draw Complete-Lotte's Insider

Lanseal's Laevatein Cup draw took place on January 1, with each class chair participating. Raymond Moen stood in for Class G's chair. The Preliminary draw was completed after minor issues with lots being crushed. Class C will face Class G first up.

A mock battle between the some groups last month resulted in the worst outcome in history, with all of Class G withdrawing in the first 5 minutes. Will they set revenge this time?

PS. My stomach REALLY hurt that day!

Didn't we just kill a bunch of rebels last month....?

I never thought they'd send cadets off into the field! How did you do it? What was in your head as you fought?

I...Avan, didn't you want to get into the academy after killing a bunch of rebels yourself? Did someone not crosscheck with the writer in January??

Works for me. I was never good with thinking anyway. Okay, let's get to work!

At least he's self-aware?

*someone walks up to him*

What was that just now, Avan?

Hm? Oh, hey, teach. I was Just going back through some of Leon's quotes.

His quotes? Is that what that notebook is?

Yup. I wrote down every bit of advice he ever gave me.

The book was a birthday present from Leon, too. I take it everywhere I go.

I see. You really do feel a great deal of respect for him, don't you?

Heh, you could say that. So, you knew him, right? What was he like? Here at the academy, I mean.

Well, I did know him, yes. I taught his class in years past. He was a star performer at the Laevatein Cup. His squad adored him.

Last year, he used a decoy tactic, then ran in solo to take the enemy's camp. His squad didn't win in the end, but it earned him his spurs around campus.

Wow, he never told me about that. That's awesome!

Lanseal has many talented cadets, but Leon was... special. Too special.

What special mission?

Hmm, interesting.

The headmaster mentioned it. Said Leon was put on it right before he died. I figure if I can find out more about that mission, I might learn what happened.

I'm afraid I don't know anything. Of course, even if I did, all that happens here is classified for security. Even as a cadet, you don't have clearance to know much.

Meanwhile, I doubt you'll learn much of ANYthing if you sleep through class.

Oof....

I expect the other classes may not agree. This is no easy competition, Avan.

And you're saddled with a pack of unmotivated lumps. They are the worst class.

I guess we'll see who the worst class is when they hand out that cup!

Heh heh. I'll be sure to clear my calendar.

Paid missions like the one we just got from the store are on their own category. They're free missions, so thus repeatable for grind and stuff. Be kind of a real bummer to pay 3k for a one-time trip.

There's a poo poo ton of missions available to us, but doing one more will trigger the Laevatein cup story. Not automatically of course, but there's a cut scene that comes with it.

This mission's about killing a specific enemy unit, a new objective type.

A new thing for this mission is a red highlight with a specific name. That is an Enemy Ace that upon death will give us an item part. Oh no no, this ain't VC1 where they just simply give you the item. You gotta grind for it and the material for it, buddy.

3 way map, with the 2nd group designated to get the easier entrance.

A lesson you'll soon learn that I did: Variety doesn't pay well.

Interesting note here is that we could've bought a Constructor Arm for the APC and build a bridge, saving like tons of CP and AP to capture that base. But I had to buy that mission that we're not playing right now. Priorities, priorities....

Zeri's going to make a beeline for that upper left base, maybe killing a star Lancer on the way.

Or at least that was the plan until he dodged the attack. Luckily Lancers can't counterattack so it wasn't a complete disaster, and he captured the base anyway.

Then again, I now have 3 useless units, and more importantly slots, just sitting there that will cost me 1 CP to clear up.

Meanwhile, Lavinia is going to roll down to secure a path for the lower left base.

However, Shocktroopers are making sure she can't proceed any farther lest she explode. APCs are fragile as hell, if you still don't believe me.

Rest of the turn is setting up Shocktroopers to defend the bases I just acquired, as I can take my time on a 3-turn A rank mission.

At the start of turn 2, Erik runs across the map and captures the last base on this map after killing a Scout.

Looks pretty crowded on the way to killing that Lancer commander.

Engineers repairing???

Lavinia pulls off a nice combo of running over a soldier in grass to negate his defense bonus, and then gunning down his head 30 times or so.

Oh yeah, so Lavinia can attack again occasionally after attacking. Not even requiring a kill. She's pretty good.

Anyways, here's Avan as a Lancer because I felt like it.

Here's him doing a headshot with a rocket launcher because he felt like it.

Meanwhile, Helmult snoops around the last map and finds the enemy ace in the grass.

A quick grenade pop and Erik shooting in the head finishes off the cowardly ace.

Zeri's been cleaning up the map and just reached the Lancer commander.

So I was told sandbag crouching doesn't give universal defense, only if they're behind it when firepower hits.

Huh.

...Uh huh.

I see.

Cutscenes are still shown in full, and partly VC2 should be noted for the VA's because it is 1) A very large cast with non-minor screentime and 2) playing the game itself, a poo poo ton of scenes are fully voiced.

My last LP, Fire Emblem Awakening, didn't really have much voice work outside of cutscenes and even then maybe topped off at 60 minutes of non-chirp clips. VC2 thus far probably has over an hour of fully voiced scenes and I'm like 1/12th into the game.

Shut up already! I don't have a drat thing to talk about with you! *leaves*

...And a fine afternoon to you, too. Erik. Ugh, what has him all prickly?

Mm? Oh, hey, Lotte. What's this about a wolf?

Dude, you don't know?! Erik Kampmann!

He's a regular boseyman in the stories they tell. He's a notorious bully!

He got that name 'cause he sinks his fangs in anyone and everyone he crosses.

Yeah, I can see that.

In any case, he's one bad dude, dude. Sent a load of our guys to the hospital. That, and a total lack of cooperation has the class at a loss.

Hmm, I see. There has to be a reason why he lashes out, though, right?

I'll try to talk to him about it next time.

I can't tell what's worse: Erik's attitude or Lotte's super SoCal accent, dude

Anyways, gonna visit and explain some stuff available for vehicle parts.

Mortar Turrets are basically dedicated grenade launchers. Not exactly great since regular tank turrets have mortar anyway.

Flamethrowers are arguably one of the best weapons in the game. They do a ton of infantry damage, eh against vehicles, but basically destroy bunkers (way later on that) in one hit. Their firing pattern is firing a left-to-right wave of flames at a target, and this is useful against things in cover. Okay, not that great since vehicles can just negate cover anyway but it's the thought that counts.

Pure turrets have their own uses. The gun turret on the 3 style ones tanks default to have a lovely anti-infantry turret. This one is basically a super Shocktrooper gun, and the main reason is two-fold: 1) Kill infantry really hard and 2) defend bases. Gatling turrets are the only type of weapons that can track and counterattack, the one weakness Flamethrowers have over Gatling.

We only have 1 shoulder part available to buy, and it's the lamp. Waste of money honestly, since being able to see enemies sooner isn't that big a deal, and more importantly it takes up weight slots which are super important. 1 extra weight is the difference between a tank forced to use a T-MAG and using the 3-ammo turrets.

Constructer Arm is one of the most important backpacks in the game, allowing the ability to make bridges over the yellow Wrench mark on maps, creating most likely a huge shortcut. It costs 2 weight though, so make sure the map you're on has a bridge to be made.

Reduce night accuracy is really meh, there's too many ways to manipulate your survival with smart traveling.

I will, however pick up side defense since the APC almost got trashed last mission by a bunch of footsoliders. Increase its survival even just a little.

Are you prepared?

You know it! We're all set to go.

Even as your adviser, I can't honestly rate Class G as anything but sub-par. I hope you'll at least avoid any casualties out there.

Hey, don't write us off just yet! I'm telling you now, we're winning this.

Then I'll have the pleasure of watching you perform a miracle. I look forward to seeing that happen. Now go to the drill ground.

*Class G moves to the drill ground*

It's doubtful. We're marching off to object humiliation.

Don't get all negative on me! We took out a tank, didn't we? What's a handful of guys compared to that? Right? It's foolproof!

They REMEMBERED killing rebels and are STILL more worried about a scrimmage match than...goddamnit, why is Avan making the most sense?

To think a person like you is even distantly related to Leon Hardins is just...

Just what? And how would you even know Leon?!

Leon Hardins was one of the most gifted students this academy has known. He was also a commander of impressive skill. And I am not one to flatter.

So even the princess looked up to him!

I respected him as a peer. I'm confident my own skill is superior, however.

I think she doesn't like Avan

Sir!

Yo!

All right, maggots! Listen up! For the Cup, we run a real combat simulation. Gallian Army rules. You'll be firing practice rounds, but they can still kill if you're not lucky. Make your peace, then hit the field!

I still can't believe we got Class G. It's like a win by default!

Yeah, just keep talking. We'll see who's smiling in a few minutes here.

Uh, make that a few days Avan. It's gonna be a while.

Meet Class G: Erik Kampmann

Personal Potentials:
Camp Defender - Bent on protecting camps by sheer force of will, raising evasive skills.
Scout Killer - Confidence that they can best any scout raises firing accuracy and attack power against infantry targets.
Outcast - Having allies of the same unit class nearby puts them on edge, lowering evasive skill.

Simple summary: Erik is your best bro to protect your camp. Camp Defender makes him a sturdy evader, Outcast is a non-factor since you don't want to group up on a base anyway, and Scouts are the #1 camp takers. Probably the only guy to get constantly deployed over than Avan.
