News Ltd is blaming The Greens NSW victories in weed :drugnerd:

quote:

IT’S not easy being Green, even in the hippie haven of northern NSW.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Nimbin and Lismore, home of the Australian Hemp Party and new Greens’ heartland, have one of the highest rates of welfare recipients in the state.

The north coast region, where the Greens claimed a historic win in Ballina and came close to taking Lismore at the weekend election, has more than 32,000 residents on welfare, including 14,000 on the Newstart allowance.

The unemployment rate in the Richmond-Tweed region, which includes Nimbin, is a whopping 10.2 per cent, compared to 6.6 per cent in Parramatta in Sydney’s west. The Department of Employment lists the region’s youth unemployment rate at 15.8 per cent.

Drug raids in Nimbin are a daily way of life.

If the Greens lose Lismore, where their candidate Adam Guise was last night trailing Nationals incumbent Thomas George by 252 votes, it could ironically be linked to the number of apathetic locals who are not registered to vote.

While the Nimbin booth traditionally registers a high Greens vote, The Daily Telegraph has learned many residents living in the hills around Nimbin and Uki were not registered and failed to vote for the anti-CSG activist.

“Why would we vote? Voting is for mugs and sellouts,” a local woman said. A non-voter said: “Nimbin is already the greenest area of Australia.”

Other Greens supporters who moved to the north coast said they were registered in other states and ineligible to vote despite having lived in the region for years.

Greens candidate Tamara Smith, who cleaned-up in the historically green Byron Shire region, yesterday looked set to claim Ballina. Outgoing MP Don Page had held the seat for the Nationals since 1988.

Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham has dismissed the idea of the “hippie” and “tree hugger” vote being behind the party’s popularity in the north.

As well as apparent voter apathy, the north coast – once a thriving farming and fishing hub – is home to the country’s worst immunisation rates and anti-fluoride activists.

It is also over-represented in annual drug statistics released by the Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research.

The National Health Performance Authority last year listed the NSW north coast as having the worst immunisation rates in Australia.

In Byron Shire, only 66.7 per cent of children aged five were fully immunised.

NSW Police targets the region through annual cannabis eradication programs unearthing massive marijuana crops.

An ice and speed syndicate allegedly linked to the Ballina Rebels was smashed by local police last December, and LSD and MDMA have also been targeted.

The Democrats are fine, I mean my new job just finished a poll in FNQ and in comparison to people up there saying they should legalize hunting aboriginals after hearing about Billy Gordon. Parties like the Dems, Socialist Alliance or Australian Progressive Party are the least of our problems in the face of extreme racism, poverty, welfare depletion, high education lockouts for poorer classes and so much more.

I mean a left winger can be in any party he likes, so long as we all see a Tory as a problem then that's all that should be needed to agree on solving the problems the conservatives present us with.

We are blessed with having incredible communications technology -- technology that lets us speak instantly with family across the world, download our favourite movies and music in mere minutes, and tweet or blog about our lives to a potential audience of billions.

But not everyone is using it for good. There are groups out there who use this same technology to commit crimes – to steal personal information, to distribute child pornography, and to plan terrorist attacks.

We need a ‘whole-of-country’ effort and, against these threats, we need metadata.

Metadata is the ‘who’, ‘when’ and ‘where’ – not the content – of communication. It’s information such as an email address or telephone number and the time the email was sent or the call was made. It doesn't include the content of the communication – not even the email subject line.

My theory is that they legitimately want those things but have bought into the dialogue that they have to be able to AFFORD THEM first. Therefore vote LNP. The bodies of 55 greyhounds have been found dumped in bushland near Bundaberg.

A member of the public discovered the carcasses on Tuesday in the Wild Flower Reserve on Coonarr Beach Road in Coonarr.

They were in varying states of decomposition.

The police and RSPCA joint greyhound racing inquiry task force are now investigating.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said it was believed the dogs were killed before the Four Corners special on live-baiting in the greyhound racing industry was aired on February 16.

"Unfortunately as I think most people would be aware, there's always been a lot of wastage in the greyhound industry," he said.

"The indications are that these may just be young dogs that didn't have the speed, basically. But that's really all we know."

Bobby Etheridge from the Friends of the Hound greyhound rescue group said the dumping of unwanted dogs was sad but not surprising news.

"It's horrible, and really shocking to those who don't know about it, but it's everyday business in the greyhound world," she said.

"We have been trying to tell people this for years, but it falls on deaf ears every time because there's too much money involved."

Autopsies will be carried out to determine the cause of death, and the dogs' ages.

Queensland Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller took to social media to say she was "absolutely sickened" by the news.

"Animal cruelty in Queensland won't be tolerated," she said.

Racing Queensland CEO Darren Condon described the discovery as "a despicable circumstance".

"We'll seek a formal report from the police," he said.

"We'll obviously work with police to assist in their investigations and take the appropriate response."

Mr Condon said he hadn't previously seen anything to indicate "a mass dumping of dogs".

Goddamnit QLD.

Animal racing should be outlawed, period. The money is dirty, the people are dirty. Everything except the dogs are dirty. The dogs don't know any better but gently caress dogs are cool and retired Greyhounds are some of the best adoptions I've heard of.

Well I mean, killing 50+ dogs at once is far from putting down the family dog because it accidentally killed a chicken or something. This isn't Old Yeller, this is basically cold blooded culling in the name of sport.

The iQ3 has been plagued by technical bugs.

By BEN GRUBB

Several software bugs have plagued the launch of Foxtel's $150 iQ3 video recording device, causing a great deal of frustration for the pay TV giant's customer base.

The bugs have been so frustrating for some of its customers that they have told the company they are returning the bug-laden device because it has become unusable.

Foxtel launched the iQ3 set-top box on Monday last week, just one day before rival service Netflix officially launched its highly-anticipated service in Australia.

Given that users have been experiencing a slew of bugs affecting the iQ3 since, the launch timing has led some to question whether the device was rushed out before an appropriate amount of time was given to iron out any bugs before it went on sale.

"Still shaking my head at the appalling stupidity of Foxtel [for] rushing this box out without proper testing," wrote one customer on Foxtel's support forums. "Netflix must have been the driver."

Says another: "This is pretty poor form by Foxtel; we are basically paying for the privilege of BETA testing this box. Foxtel we are not happy and want these issues fixed … You think we are angry or rabid now? Wait until Game of Thrones starts and we record it in SD and we can't watch it because iQ3 has errored on us."

Given the iQ3 was first announced in 2013 and scheduled for release in the final quarter of 2014 but was delayed, this seems to give some weight to the theory the device's launch date of a day before Netflix's local launch was no mistake, given it could've launched any other week but the week Netflix launched locally.

The number of bugs reported by customers is too long to list entirely. But chief among the concerns, many of which Foxtel has acknowledged on its online support forum, are that:

The iQ3 randomly resets itself  - in some cases several times daily
Recordings of shows disappear
The wrong content is shown on the wrong channel
The remote stops working intermittently
A "no signal" message is sometimes shown on certain channels even when there is signal
The device lags when navigating between menus
Recordings of shows cannot be deleted
Channels sometimes randomly switch
Audio is not able to be delivered to a TV using HDMI from the iQ3
The Foxtel logo on the device randomly flashes, which becomes annoying in dark rooms
Recordings don't play back from where they've been left off
There's no way to see whether you've already watched a piece of content
Content is set to expire when it shouldn't

While Foxtel staff openly admit in support forums to many of the numerous problems plaguing the device, a company spokesman was less transparent about the issues.

"As with any new product there have been a small number of procedural issues with some of the units at launch," the Foxtel spokesman said.

"The only issue of any significance is that we have identified a very small number of iQ3 boxes that were released with a superseded version of code. We are working quickly to resolve this with affected customers as quickly as possible."

But even customers with the most up-to-date version say the issues remain; Foxtel support staff on its forum also openly acknowledge that many issues remain on the software versions installed on most of its customers' devices.

A "Q&A" page created Saturday, for instance, which has already attracted over 1200 page views, lays out many of the problems iQ3 customers are facing.

But when customers read it to see what can be done to fix many of their issues, they are often greeted with a message similar to this: "We are aware that some recordings won't resume from where you last viewed it, we'll have it fixed soon".

Or this: "We're aware of the expiry date on recorded programming … Once resolved, we'll automatically send an update to the your iQ3 overnight and no future recordings will expire."

And this (in relation to remote control issues): "At this stage we do not have a timeline when this issue will be permanently resolved."

As well as venting their concerns on Foxtel's own support forum, customers are also using broadband forum Whirlpool to air their grievances.

It's understood Foxtel, joint owned by Telstra and News Corp, outsources part of the delivery of iQ3 to Indian firm Pace Micro Technology India Pvt Ltd. Engineering program manager at the firm, Joseph Daniel, states on his LinkedIN profile that he has been "working on the Foxtel iQ3 solution delivery" since September 2013.

Brett Paton, head of technology development at Foxtel, recently told technology website Gizmodo there were more than 500 people in 11 countries who worked on iQ3.

Mike Ivanchenko, director of product at Foxtel, also explained to Gizmodo how the device would have many features users would enjoy.

"This platform will allow us to deliver on the promise of what you want, where you want, when you want it. And that includes things like starting in one location, finishing in another...," Mr Ivanchenko said.

Meanwhile, Murray Allan, a product manager at Foxtel in user experience, who is responsible for working on the company's product developments, including iQ3, states on LinkedIN that his "focus is always to create easy to use, enjoyable user experiences for our customers".

For many iQ3 customers, this easy to use experience Mr Allan speaks of remains to be seen.

Foxtel rushes new box out to hinder Netflix, ends up Xbox One-ing the whole launch instead. The box is also known to FACTORY RESET AT RANDOM.
