You can buy all the tools to do a good job of refilling the system for like 250-300, too. Read motronic's thread, it is nowhere near as hard as you would think.

Also, you can probably get all the tools to do the head gasket job and do it five times over before you have as much money into it* as you would pay the mechanic.

I didn't know what a pinion seal was or how to change one in 2008. And had to read an online writeup to figure out how to change the radiator in a jeep. You can totally learn how to do anything you want on a car (except for maybe rotating assembly, transmission rebuild, steering box, and ring/pinion setup, those are super fiddly and require extreme attention to detail and patience some simply don't posess) and do it cheaper than a mechanic, if you want to.

Hell, if it weren't for the fact that I want a warranty on it since glass is a pain in the rear end to ship and costs a lot, I would be doing the windshield in the Justy later today. Instead I called a glass company that a friend works for and he is doing it :v: the $100 difference between materials and shop price is worth the warranty and not having to take the old one out myself.

* yes I am ignoring time spent. I consider learning that stuff a life skill, it is incredibly empowering to realize you can do repairs that would cost most people thousands for $150 in parts and an afternoon, and opens the door to buying ever cheaper and more broken project cars. Gotta do something with the money you save, right? :v:

I'd also like to punch the genius engineer at ford who decided that the EGR valve, the solenoid that controls vacuum to it, and the senor that provides feedback to the ECU about EGR flow should be a complete unit on my P71, rather than 3 separate, replaceable parts like on the earlier models. Because the sensor (DPFE, for those of you who speak Ford P0401) sensor is daft, I have to buy an entire $175 EGR assembly, rather than JUST the sensor. Jerks.
I found it for $127 on Rock Auto, but still...
Once that's replaced I can get the silly thing inspected and registered (because Texas just went to a single sticker, so you can't just get one or the other.)

I also need to replace the bearings in the $Texas 200A alternator, because I sure ain't buying a new one. But first, I need a special tool to get the goddamned pulley off, because it has a built in overrunning clutch for some reason. Fortunately that tool is only $25 on Amazon (on the way, as well.)

Wow they found a way to make it worse than the one I had to do a couple months ago. Fuckin' Ford.

We ended up replacing everything except the sensor anyways, because the tube was rotted in half, the tube flare nut was seized to the bung, the bung was partially seized to the manifold, and the valve was clogged. I guess the sensor's still original, but it might not be for long because it still throws a code occasionally.

If your EGR bung is seized to the EGR pipe or module and you end up needing to replace it, I've got the right tap to chase the threads (two of them, because the one I ordered first was on the slow boat from China and I needed it RFN) and will gladly mail it to you.

Doesn't matter. Not anorexic, not a land whale, have some interesting hobbies (awesome if we have some common ground hobby wise, but don't have to) and a job, be happy with your life and emotionally stable with some semblance of a sense of humor and I'm sold.

I'm strongly of the opinion that there are unhappy people and happy people. Why? I know some pretty unhappy people. Some of them have moved 3-5 times, always blaming their unhappiness on where they are, what they do for work, etc. Somehow they're still unhappy where they live next, too. Why? Because happiness is a state of mind, not a place*. Other people are happy no matter what, or mostly happy.

I don't like boring, emotionally unstable, or unhappy/negative people in my life. At this point I've realized that most people never change, and they certainly can't be made to change, they have to WANT to change, so if someone doesn't fit that bill and isn't family... sorry, bye. I don't need them negative waves in my life, Moriarty.

Self awareness goes a long way too. If you can't make fun of your own faults, you take yourself too seriously.

agreed.

I brought my shitcan XJ to them with my tires already mounted, just needed to be balanced, and it took them like 2.5-3 hours of the slack-assest, most retarded mechanic dicking around before they were "done." Except they weren't balanced worth a poo poo.

It took half an hour for my car to even end up in the bay. Another half hour before it was off the ground. And a long rear end time to balance the tires. In like a six bay shop with several mechanics and maybe one or two other cars in the same time period.

Pretty sure they were stretching time out and trying to avoid being sent home. I was not happy in the least, because I had poo poo to get done on my half-day vacation other than wait for some shitforbrains to balance my tires and got none of it done, and still had to have my tires rebalanced again. It was a lifetime balance but gently caress that, they can keep the goddamn money, I would rather pay again somewhere else than go through that shitshow again.

... it took me maybe 45 minutes to balance all 4 myself at ACEofsnett's dad's place, and that's jacking each corner up manually and using a 4-way not an impact to take them off, then having to be taught how to use the balancing machine. Unless you just want a regular old style narrowband, in which case search on rockauto for:
Part Group: Emission
Part Type: Oxygen Sensor

Then look through the results till you find a 4 wire that's got a connector you recognize. They're automatically sorted by price. I don't believe narrowband sensors really vary that much in calibration between makes/models, but I could be wrong, if so, make sure to verify the one you choose is megasquirt compatible or expect to have to come up with your own calibration curve for it.

I buy Milwaukee or Makita for anything I'm going to beat up. My sawzall is actually about due for replacement... I bought it in like 2010 and have torn apart half of a house and probably five cars with it, not too surprised. I am really not nice to it, I usually stay 100% on the throttle and give it a quick jerk to unstick it if the blade jams, while it's trying to be a jackhammer. Still works great, but occasionally something slips inside and the motor spins even though the blade is jammed.

... actually I should look on ereplacementparts tonight and see if they carry whatever part is broken. I'm assuming it's some kind of torque limiting clutch or knurled metal shaft pressed into a plastic gear that I've absolutely rooted.

(I have owned more chrysler products that I have anything else...)

Oh that reminds me. I have bitched extensively about how AMC used factory duct tape on their wiring harnesses, as insulation, not just for bundling. They would crimp a brass open ferrule splice onto some wires to join them inside a loom then fold a piece of duct tape over it.

Chrysler decided to one up those fuckers when they took over. This was a splice inside a 95 XJ harness.

Yeah they just resistance welded it all together... that was after I stripped the nasty loving cloth and natural rubber friction tape off of it and blasted it with brakleen.

If they had just used sealant lined heatshrink over that like they did starting in 96 or 97, I would be fine with it. Friction tape so lovely I wouldn't use it to attach cable to a fish tape though? Really?
