As much as Don regresses and makes horrible, backfalling decisions, one constant about the character is he always wants to better himself and become a better person. He often comes up short, as do many of us.

I think Pete is quite important in this context: he basically behaves like Roger and Don, only when he does it he isn't surrounded by coding that tells us "this is cool and good", so we see him as a creep, a drunk and a rapist. Pete's tragedy is that he is sufficiently self-aware that he knows this.
