Don't worry, you're not the only one. In a similar vein, I was in my 20s before I figured out that "If I said you had a beautiful body, would you hold it against me?" was a double-entendre. I just thought it was the stereotypical example of a bad pickup line because it was dumb, not because it was a cheesy pun.
