OK, I got sick of waiting for an ST's time in the V:tM LARP I'm playing in, so I signed up to be an AST (I've HST and AST'd VtR and Demon before). This is using BNS VtM rules.

They have me running a test plot, a one-night murder-mystery story, but I'm having trouble designing something that isn't completely exploded by the first application of Auspex ··· (Spirit's Touch). Currently I'm envisioning a Native tribe leader who gets dragged to death while standing up (as if a Wendigo - the myth not the werewolf clan - dragged him to death) but it was actually normal white-nationalist bozos, working under the direction of a shady member of the state gaming commission who wanted the tribal leader out of the picture so he could expand casino operations to his benefit. Obviously if this goes well, there's a knock-on plot that the actual Wendigo spirit is angered that someone 'framed' him, and rumbles to life and makes things difficult.

Related: I can't really google-fu up any forms that are related to managing interwoven plot webs. Lots of character sheets, not so much on GM sheets. Any thoughts on making my life easier?

Well that was serendipitous:

quote:

As I was not satisfied with the tools I had to run my campaign (Trello + google docs + spreadsheets), I decided that I would build my own :)

What it does:

Show everything on a single screen.

Pin/unpin content without deleting it

Quick-search through everything

Wiki-style hyperlinks so that I can easily jump to related content

stay SIMPLE.

Simplicity was very important (more even than the number of features), because I found most campaign builders to have too much stuff to learn before you can start using them. I wanted something that works as well for very little sessions than it does for big campaigns.

OK. I play in a BNS V20 Vampire LARP. I just got gakked last game so now I need a new character. It's an approximately 40 person game, and I am taking suggestions based on the following information:
  • "Inigo Montoya Clause" prevents me from playing a Ventrue, since that's the clan I was
  • Malkavians and Nosferatu are ridiculously over-represented. This means a Malk or Nos would give me more people to play with, but also make my character immediately redundant
  • There is one "Independent" slot open if I want to play a Setite or Giovanni (there is currently 0 Setites and 1 Giovanni), but I know nothing about really playing either of those clans
  • I don't want anything to do with combat, because the only thing Vampire LARP does worse than everything else is combat, which always ends up as stupid boring mass combat
  • I like to play monsters/low humanity/'bad guys' because the hugbox of people who don't get that Vampires are actually Apex predators and humans are cattle irritates me.
Please pitch me your terrible concept/thing you've always wanted to play.

Question about Setites: conceptually, being the power broker/make-your-dreams-come-true-for-a-cost guy sounds fun, but I'd be the only Setite in a 40+ person game, with further Setites literally not allowed to enter game unless one of the 2 Gio's quits/switches (we have a cap of 3 Independent vamps), so I'd be the only person in my clan AND completely shut out from playing at court positions.

How much of my game would be based on "make your own fun" and trying to convince other (cam) players I am trustworthy to deal with?

oh god I'm now thinking about a Perez Hilton style TMZ Setite gunning for Harpy as a sort of "the only neutral arbiter is an outsider" medium-long term goal trying to muckrake on vamps while making life better or worse for people who do/don't pay me, respectively.

I am so loving mad after reading the Followers of Set clanbook (revised). It's just absolute peak bullshit White Wolf. 30 pages of endless, useless backstory about the origins and weaving a tale that intertwines an actual goddamn real-world faith into vampiric genesis, including tons of stuff about, like, 'the Setite's role in 1500s Spain' that is 100% useless for anyone actually wanting to play a Setite. The second section fares a little better, approaching usefulness after it gets over stroking itself off about a bunch of paths no PC is ever going to realistically be on that are divergent to the main Setite line, already a rare clan. Oh, and the sample PCs including a ripoff of the merchant from the beginning of Aladdin and a chomo. Great job

Finally we get an omnibus of famous Setite PCs the writers/White Wolf staff cooked up to come in and be cooler and more awesome than the PCs will ever be.

I don't know why I ever expect better, WW in the 90s were just infested with failed "Urban Fantasy" authors who didn't care about how their books would actually be used by a player to inform running a game that includes, or playing as, the clan on the cover. There's just so little info that matters to a character set in the modern nights.

gently caress White Wolf as staff, a record label and as a motherfucking crew. And if you're down with White Wolf, gently caress you too.

Effortpost incoming:

So after getting got, I rolled up an Independent Setite for my LARP. I have no experience playing as (or even with, really) other Setites in 10 years of Camarilla-based LARPing, so I was going in blind. My concept was approved and lauded by the STs as a Matt-Taibbi-style muckraker, the idea being how better to corrupt and get the Cam to tear itself apart than to sell its secrets back to the other members. My Setite (Frank Lyon Wall. F. Lyon Wall, get it? :shepicide: ) is bouncing around, being suitably accommodating to Cam members while making sure they know I'm happy to talk with them off-the-record for my kindred-only newsletter, Up Against the Wall.

So that's all well and good, but I'm looking out at the future, after having consumed what useful bits there are in the Clanbook about actually playing a Setite (instead of masturbatory lore about the Dark Ages). But I'm foreseeing a problem. Most of the Setite lore points to getting folks to indulge while whispering the sweet nothings of (essentially) LaVey Satanism but that only works when you have NPCs to flex against. Setite powers are subtle, but not when you stop play and specifically instruct a PC to throw a chop and then retcon their own opinions. And while I'm a strong enough player to realize "hey, the fall of Greg Gangrel as he submits to the influence of a Setite and sells out his clan" is a cool story to play, there are certainly members of the LARP who view "survive and be strong enough to never be killed" as interesting-enough motivation to put on blue jeans and a Deadpool T-Shirt and come to game playing an Elder (yes this is real)

So my question is, how do I go about probing the other players and/or STs to make sure my whole clan's concept isn't strangled in the crib since there are almost no NPCs in the game that aren't punching bags for the deranged players who want to do mass combat in a White Wolf game that absolutely cannot handle that. How do I (or do I?) approach other players explaining my plans for their characters that, from a certain viewpoint, are "me winning, them losing" instead of "telling a cool story that makes their character the centerpiece of larger plots"?

Did I shoot myself in the foot by going IA? by going Setite? by LARPing at all?

OK so LARP update.

The Newsletter was a flop due to joyless fucks grilling me all night about the Tzimisce Horoscope ("Why would you include them?" "It's a joke." "But who is this being seen by? Are you distributing to the Sabbat?" "") and other people saying "you can't write this down! it's a breach of the Masquerade!" like I was dropping a stack of them at the coffee shop.

I also got vetoed on an IRL in-character twitter even though that would be fun and on-brand as gently caress.

However, I did get to have some fun being an rear end in a top hat. The Tremere recently (like hours before game, so it was after I "went to press") had one of their number in the city deemed an Infernalist and executed, so I picked up a schmaltzy sympathy card from the dollar general and had as many characters as possible sign it. The Assamite Primogen simply wrote "HA HA - Clan Assamite" so that was pretty great.

Anyway, LARPing is fun as gently caress when you're doing it right (ie for maximum antagonism and fun, instead of to become a cool vampire god) and sucks a bunch when joyless assholes don't seem to get that there's a certain amount of handwaving that needs to happen or else the reality of "no one would ever gather as vampires because other vampires are too dangerous" would set in, and that's no fun for anyone.
