ROUND OF 32 MATCHUPS - GEORGIA REGION

8: Colorado State (d. Temple, Georgia) vs. 4: Notre Dame (d. South Florida, Central Michigan)

Here's the bad side about CSU knocking out The Dawgz: it means Notre Dame has a potentially easier path to the Sweet 16. Irish take the lead off a safety and then a 11 yard TD run. CSU gets on the board with a FG in the 2nd but it's a 9-3 Notre Dame lead at the break. ND matches the FG for the only points in the 3rd, and then what feels like the backbreaking TD midway through the 4th for a 19-3 lead. But that finally wakes up the Rams, who get their first TD of the game two minutes later and an 2-pointer to make it a one possession game, 19-11. Irish get some insurance with 1:39 left with a chip shot FG to go back up by two scores, but CSU scores from 55 yards out to make it 22-17. Alas, they fail to get their second 2-pointer, Notre Dame gets the onside kick, and that's game.

2: UCLA (d. UMass, UCF) vs. 14: Buffalo (d. Clemson, Minnesota)

The Buffs are the last double-digit seed left alive in this dance and when they get a 50-yard TD run midway through the first to go up 7-3 on the Bruins, it looks like the dream is still alive. However, UCLA then goes on a 42-3 run for which Buffalo has no answer for until they get a meaningless garbage time TD late in this one for a final of 45-17. Bad news for anyone who enjoys rooting for the underdog, but potentially good news for Irish haters, since let's be honest UCLA was gonna have a better shot than Buffalo was.

ROUND OF 32 MATCHUPS - BAYLOR REGION

1: Baylor (d. Troy, Iowa) vs. 4: Utah (d. Wake Forest, Memphis)

With TCU upset by Missouri, Baylor remains the Big 12's best hopes of winning this whole thing, unless you think OK can bang with the Ducks. Both are fairly evenly matched early, but Jay Lee catches two TD's in the second, including a 49 yarder with time running out in the 2nd for the Bearmobile to drive to a 24-14 lead at recess. They trade TDs in the 3rd, but the Utes explode in the 4th. A safety, FG, and Bubba Poole TD puts Utah up 32-31 with five to play. Baylor reclaims the lead with 1:29 left at 34-32, but it's Utah who cranks their offense into overdrive and score less than a minute later for a 39-34 lead. Needing a TD, Bryce Petty only gets his team over midfield before time runs out, and the second Big 12 1-Seed goes down in flames before escaping their own region.

2: Florida State (d. UConn, Maryland) vs. 3: Florida (d. Tulane, Texas)

These two played IRL, of course, and needless to say the Noles won and sent Will Muschamp packing to the plains. Here, the Gators show some life with a 59 yard 1st Quarter TD (with a missed XP of course, Muschamp can't have too many points at one time), until FSU dominates the 2nd with a Rashad Greene TD and two FGs for a 13-6 halftime lead. Jameis Winston, who decided that a woman's body belonged to him, threw two TD passes in the 3rd quarter. One was to Greene for his second score of the game, the other was to a Florida defender who took it 85 yards for a TD and to keep Gator in the game. A third FSU FG put them back up by 10 early in the 4th, but Muschamp must have taken a nap or something because his team proceeded to score twice, albeit one was a 43-yard punt return TD and Florida went up 27-23. However, FSU's ability to pull wins out of their rear end continued, as they hit from 39 to pull within one, and then got the game-winning FG from 45 to win 29-27. Winston was bad, 26-46 286 yards and 2 TDs/INTs, but better than Jeff Driskel at 6-20, 97 yards, a TD and an INT.

ROUND OF 32 MATCHUPS - MICHIGAN STATE REGION

1: Michigan State (d. UNLV, North Carolina) vs. 4: Arizona State (d. Florida International, BYU)

Boy they'll just let any ol' matchup in the Rose Bowl these days. A surprisingly even matchup considering the styles involved. Sparty struck first midway through the 1st on a short TD pass that was countered by ASU seconds into the 2nd quarter. Each team also got a FG before going into the half deadlocked at ten. That was the story in the second half as well, Devils got a 10 yard TD pass in the 3rd but MSU rallied with an 8 yard TD run, and then both kicked FGs in the 4th to send this contest to Overtime. Sparty finally buckled down in the extra period, holding ASU to a FG and pounding their way in from six yards out to hold off the Sun Devils, 27-23.

2: Mississippi State (d. Kent State, Louisiana Tech) vs. 3: Texas A&M (d. Akron, Pittsburgh)

I guess as a warmup for the Bama-Arky runback next round, we'll have this inter-SEC West matchup. IRL Dak Prescott threw two TDs and ran for three as #CLANGA won 48-31. Here, the Aggies kept Dak Prescott to just one rushing TD and prevented the QB from throwing any. Alas, that left Josh Robinson with mismatches he took advantage of, as the bowling ball RB ran for three TDs and Cowbell again beat the Dogfuckers, 34-24. A&M did have nine different receivers catch a pass, which I guess is nice.

ROUND OF 32 MATCHUPS - AUBURN REGION

1: Auburn (d. Miami Ohio, Georgia Southern) vs. 5: Duke (d. App State, Arizona)

Is Duke much improved these past couple seasons? Absolutely. Are they ready to really hang with the big boys however? Not quite, as Auburn puts a hurting on the Blue Devil D to the tune of a 49-31 whuppin. Auburn led 28-7 at the break and even though Duke scored three TDs in the 3rd, they never pulled within a single score in the 2nd Half. War Eagle ran 51 times for 375 yards, by which I mean Cameron Artis-Payne ran 29 times for 325 yards and 5 of Auburn's scores, which I think is the best this tournament has seen.

2: Ole Miss (d. Southern Miss, Penn State) vs. 3: Marshall (d. Louisiana-Monroe, Fresno State)

Due to being a 3-seed, this is Marshall's first game against a Power 5 opponent. The good news is that they were facing Dr. Bo, who is the cure for a struggling defense. Wallace wasn't Good Bo or Bad Bo but Mediocre Bo, 18-30 196 yards, a TD and a pick. However, the Rebel D didn't show up in the 1st Half as after kicking the opening FG, Marshall ran off all their points, leading 34-3 midway through the 3rd. Ole Miss did figure out how to play football again, scoring 20 unanswered as they tried a 2-pointer in there for some reason, but you don't advance only playing 30 minutes of football as Marshall becomes the only non-power conference team in the Sweet 16, 34-23.

ROUND OF 16 MATCHUPS

Oregon Region

1: Oregon (d. Eastern Michigan, Navy, Tennessee) vs. 2: Oklahoma (d. New Mexico, Boston College, San Diego State)

Very little early on, as Duck boots a FG in the 1st for the only points and a second one to lead 6-0 before Samaje Perine finally breaks through for a 46 yard TD catch and Sooner takes the lead. Oregon had a counter-punch before the end of the half with Royce Freeman running one in from just outside of the red zone and Oregon leads 13-7 at the break. That lead gets extended on Freeman's second TD of the day five minutes into the third. One OK FG later, Freeman caps his hat trick with a one-yard TD plunge and Oregon looks like this one is on lock, leading 27-10. Perine tries to make up the difference himself with his second score, also a one-yarder, as Oklahoma pulls to 27-17, but Marcus Mariota finally makes his presence known as he breaks the Sooner's backs with a 73 yard TD bomb with 2:16 left that makes it 34-17, and Oklahoma can't make up that difference. Duckies win their own region and advance to play the winner of the Auburn region.

Alabama Region

1: Alabama (d. Georgia State, Washington State, Miami) vs. 2: Arkansas (d. Wyoming, Indiana, Kansas State)

IRL this was a shitshow this past year, Bama escaping 14-13, though the previous two seasons were 52-0 blowouts in favor of the Tide, and I challenge anyone to find me a matchup where two years in a row it was 52-0 in favor of someone. Here, Saban figured out the key to beating bert was to jam at least 11 in the box and force QB Brandon Allen to beat them. The GodKing was right, as the Hogs only ran for 96 yards on 40 carries, which is far below what they've done before, while Allen was 20-37 for 277 yards, a TD and a pick. However, Arkansas kept Bama out of the end zone as well, forcing kicker Adam Griffith, whom we all know as this bastion of accuracy, to boot Bama to victory. He did, hitting four of six tries, and once Derrick Henry broke through for a score bert had no answer that didn't involve eating his own weight in cottage cheese, Bama winning 26-10.

Ohio State Region

1: Ohio State (d. New Mexico State, Oregon State, Nebraska) vs. 2: Stanford (d. Tulsa, Western Kentucky, Georgia Tech)

Surprisingly evenly matched, with a 3-3 game at the half leading to a 10-all game into the 4th. Ezekiel Elliott scored from one yard out to put the Buckeyes up 17-10. The Trees were happy to grind their way down the field, and in a drive that took about six minutes tied the game on a three yard plunge. Ohio State falters on their next drive and just past midfield with 1:41 left, Stanford claimed the lead on a 45 yard TD pass to go up 24-17. That's still lots of time left on the clock for a good team these days, and the Buckeyes get down to the Stanford 20. Two passes into the end zone don't fall into Ohio State hands, and the IRL national champs don't make it out of their own region here. I'm officially protesting this sim.

TCU Region

4: Missouri (d. UTSA, Louisville, TCU) vs. 2: USC (d. Army, East Carolina, Wisconsin)

Both teams dropped some bombs early, Trojans hitting from 39 yards out and Mizzou countering to tie the game at seven midway through the first. USC booted a FG to take a 10-7 lead after 1, and then the two traded TDs once more. From there, 17-14 USC lead with 10 left in the 1st Half, it became a FG kicking contest, just to piss me off. Six alternating FGs were kicked with USC still holding onto their three point lead, until Mizzou finally broke into the end zone with 4:26 left to claim their first lead of the day. Trojans didn't lie down, throwing from 13 yards out to retake the advantage 33-30 with 1:22 left. Tigers had enough left to move into FG range, and despite their late kicking struggles they connect from 46 yards out to send the game into OT. Missouri boots their fifth field goal to take the initial lead, but USC is tired of this kicking bullshit and elects to have Nelson Agholor score from 10 yards out to claim the TCU region, 40-36.

ROUND OF 16 MATCHUPS

Georgia Region

4: Notre Dame (d. South Florida, Central Michigan, Colorado State) vs. 2: UCLA (d. UMass, UCF, Buffalo)

UCLA drills one from 50 to start the scoring, then Brett Hundley runs in from 10 yards away to give the Bruins a two-possession lead. The Irish counter with a FG and a rushing TD of their own to tie the game up, and decide that's enough scoring for one day. The greedy Bruins decide otherwise and proceed to put more points on the board, another two TDs and FGs to eliminate the Irish and win the Georgia region 30-10. Hundley didn't have superstar numbers, 14-19 for 114 and a passing TD to go with the rushing one, but he was better than future FSU QB Everett Golston, who was 16-34 for 246, no TDs and two picks. Technically UCLA still hasn't have played a Power 5 member due to the Irish's Independent status, but that's splitting hairs.

Baylor Region

4: Utah (d. Wake Forest, Memphis, Baylor) vs. 2: Florida State (d. UConn, Maryland, Florida)

Evenly matched through the 1st Quarter with each team putting seven on the board, the 2nd Quarter belongs to the Utes, who take a 20-7 lead thanks to a Devontae Booker TD and two FGs. This puts FSU in a familiar position, trailing a seemingly inferior opponent, and the Noles reacted as they normally did, two TDs in the 3rd sandwiching a Utah FG to make it a two point lead for the Mormons, 23-21. Karlos Williams changed that with nine minutes left to put FSU up 28-23, and a long Ute FG was blocked with five minutes left. Add in one more defensive stand and it's another come from behind win for Florida State. Jameis Winston, who hears but doesn't understand the word "no", was 17-25, 255 yards, one TD and one INT.

Michigan State Region

1: Michigan State (d. UNLV, North Carolina, Arizona State) vs. 2: Mississippi State (d. Kent State, Louisiana Tech, Texas A&M)

Two also-rans in their home state that have recently made good and surpassed their older brothers clash here for the region. Both sides landed haymakers early, #CLANGA with a 27 yard TD pass countered by a Sparty 43 yard bomb in the 1st Quarter. The second saw more of the same, Spartans with a short TD pass answered by a 24 yard TD run that saw the game tied at the half, 14-14. Things opened up a bit in the 3rd, Bulldogs kicking a FG to take the lead before Josh Robinson found his way to the promised land from 11 out. That meant Jeremy Langford had to respond, which he did from 25 yards to make it a 24-21 game. Then we get to the 4th and this ride finally goes off the rails. Langford rushes for his second score and Sparty goes up 28-24. Cowbell can only respond with a FG to pull within one, which looks bad once Michigan State gets a TD pass with 6:53 left but they elect to only kick the XP, meaning they're up eight instead of a potential nine. Josh Robinson puts the Bulldogs on his back, running in from ten yards out with Prescott finishing the 2-pointer to tie the game at 35, 4:31 left. Clanga forces a quick stop and blocks Sparty's punt to have a short field, which allows Robinson to convert the block into 7 from 22 yards and now Miss St is up 42-35, 2:29 left. Sparty pounds their way downfield and Langford gets his second score from one yard out with 29 seconds left and we're headed to OT. Or so we think, because CLANGA blocks the XP, their second kick block in the quarter, and recover the ensuing onside kick to win 42-41. Hell of a game and one I'd have paid good money to see. Also good to see the upstart SEC actually knock off a member of the Big Ten, that plucky conference down south needs all the respect and luck it can get against the men of college football.

Auburn Region

1: Auburn (d. Miami Ohio, Georgia Southern, Duke) vs. 3: Marshall (d. Louisiana-Monroe, Fresno State, Ole Miss)

This one should have just a little bit of scoring. Devon Johnson runs in from 11 yards out to put Marshall on the board, which Auburn can only answer with a FG in the 1st Quarter. Two quick strikes from Marshall has the underdogs leading 21-3 and the possibility of an upset looms large. But the GusBus can get up the speed quickly as Auburn scores three times in the span of 2:03, two runs and a 47-yard TD pass as time expires to take a 24-21 halftime lead. That is extended with a D'haquille Williams (they misspelled Shaq) TD reception to go up 31-21, but Marshall immediately fires back with Steward Butler running for a 74 yard TD. Auburn kicks another FG and it's a six-point game going into the 4th. The Herd reclaims the lead with a TD two minutes into the quarter to go up 35-34. Auburn answers five minutes later with a long 50-yard FG to reclaim the advantage 37-35, and Marshall reanswers with a FG of their own five minutes after that to lead 38-37. That gives Auburn three minutes to get into FG range for the victory, but Nick Marshall gets picked off around midfield and chaos reigns in the Auburn bracket, where Marshall is the sole non Power-5 member to win a region.

C. Everett Koop
Aug 18, 2008
So here's where we sit after the eight regions are decided and the eight-team playoff is unveiled.

Overall #1 Oregon wins their region handily, only once playing a game decided by single-digits. They face Marshall, the #3 out of the Auburn region, who had to upset two SEC teams in Ole Miss and Auburn to advance and is the only non Power-5 member to survive. The winner of that will face the winner of The Battle of Los Angeles, as USC and UCLA both win their regions to rematch with each other. USC was the #2 in the TCU region, helped by not having to play the Frogs, as was the Bruins, who were #2 in the Georgia region and had the Dawgz get eliminated long before they would have met.

The other side of the bracket will see an all-SEC matchup, as Alabama, who survived an early upset bid at the hands of Wazzu to win its region, faces Mississippi State, who held on to beat Michigan State in a barnburner to win that region and advance. They'll face the winner of the final matchup, Stanford and FSU. Stanford grounded and pounded the Buckeyes to win the OSU region, while FSU was helped by Baylor getting bounced and only needing to beat Utah to advance out of the region.

The matchups:

#1 Oregon (won Oregon region) vs. #3 Marshall (won Auburn region)
#2 USC (won TCU region) vs. #2 UCLA (won Georgia region)
#1 Alabama (won Alabama region) vs. #2 Mississippi State (won Michigan State region)
#2 Stanford (won Ohio State region) vs. #2 Florida State (won Baylor region)

And in the :siren:CONFERENCE SCOREBOARD:frogsiren:, the Pac-12 is the clear winner with half of the teams and one guaranteed to advance to the semi-finals. The SEC claimed two with one to advance, FSU represents the ACC and Marshall C-USA, giving love to the mid-majors. Surprisingly enough, the home of the national champs and the greatest conference in the history of mankind The Almighty Big Ten and the disrespected conference, left out of the inaugural IRL College Football Playoff Big 12 find themselves on the outside looking in here.

In terms of seeding only two #1s advanced, the overall top 2 in Oregon and Alabama. Five #2s advanced, which is surprising although only Stanford and Miss State beat their respective #1 to advance. Marshall advances though they were a #3 seed and beat the #2 and #1 in the Auburn region, making their run perhaps the most impressive so far.

ROUND OF 8 MATCHUPS

1: Oregon (won Oregon Region) vs. 3: Marshall (won Auburn Region)

I dunno what the O/U would be for this matchup but I'd take the Over. Nothing doing for the first ten minutes until the Duckies boot a short FG to open the scoring. Marshall's response comes quickly, as Rakeem Cato finds a man from 51 yards out at the Herd is on top as TFF goes wild. Oregon's not to be denied, as they warp down the field and moving into the 2nd Quarter, strike from three yards out to regain the lead at 10-7. Marshall's 41 yard FG evens the game at 10, but Oregon proved they have the ability to score from distance, Marcus Mariota connecting on a 45 yard TD pass to put Oregon back on top. Devon Johnson runs in from 23 yards out and Marshall ties the game at 17-17, which ends up being our halftime score. Things start out slowly in the second half as well, no one scoring until Marshall hits another FG midway through the 3rd, with Oregon getting a short TD run to take a 24-20 lead into the 4th. 30 seconds into the final 15, Devon Johnson gets his second TD run of the day and Marshall goes into the lead. Six minutes later Oregon connects on a long FG and we're tied again, 27-27. With 8:18 left and starting at their own 17, Cato commands a long drive that gets down to the Duck 23 where he finds Davonte Allen and the Herd leads Oregon 34-27 with 3:32 left. But that's a lot of time for Oregon, who don't need all of it. Just inside the red zone, a screen pass from Mariota goes in from 16 yards out and we're tied 34 all with a minute left. Marshall can't do anything and Oregon keeps the clock alive, getting the ball back with :17 left. From there, Mariota finds Darren Carrington, who gets 51 of his 70 receiving yards on the day as he rumbles well into FG range and is shoved OOB with :05 left. The 35 yard FG is good, and Oregon survives a game Marshall squad. This also ensures an all Pac-12 semi and a representative in the championship game, so good for the Best Coast.

2: USC (won TCU Region) vs. 2: UCLA (won Georgia Region)

IRL The Bruins took this one at the Rose Bowl this year 38-20. Here, it's another feeling out process until JuJu Smith scores on a short pass to put USC on top first. UCLA's counter comes on a 49 yard FG to make it a 7-3 game after 1. And then the wheels fell off the Bruins bus. USC scored the next 44 points, including 4 Javorius Allen TD runs, and led 51-3 when UCLA finally got a meaningless TD with two minutes to go. Trojans destroy the Bruins 51-10, their first win in the series since blanking UCLA 50-0 in 2011. Pac-12 finally gets the Oregon-USC matchup they've wanted, except it happens in the National Semis. BTW, last time they played, in 2012, Trojans beat the #2 Ducks 62-51.

ROUND OF 8 MATCHUPS

1: Alabama (won Alabama Region) vs. 2: Mississippi State (won Michigan State Region)

When the two played their annual game this year, Bama won 25-20, the smallest margin of victory in their seven-year winning streak. That margin was eclipsed here when O.J. Howard caught a 39-yard TD pass following an earlier FG and Bama led 10-0 towards the end of the 1st. Bama would then add three more TDs and another FG and led 34-0 with 3:38 left in the 1st Half and it looked like the rout was on. Cowbell finally got on the board with a FG towards the end of the 1st Half, then Josh Robinson found his way into the end zone from four yards out and it was 34-10, five minutes into the third. Alas, that was everything #CLANGA could muster on the offensive end, while Bama added on three more TDs for a final score of 55-10. Blake Sims was 23-31 for 320 and three scores, TJ Yeldon went for 153 yards and two scores, Amari Cooper had over 100 yards receiving, and limited Robinson and Dak Prescott to 70 yards on 44 attempts rushing, which is bad.

2: Stanford (won Ohio State Region) vs. 2: Florida State (won Baylor Region)

Stanford picks off Jameis Winston on FSU's opening possession, but was unable to do anything with it. If you were hoping that would set a tone for the game, you're wrong, but thankfully this ended up being an actual game instead of a one-sided assbeating like our last two matchups. FSU recovered for a 32 yard TD pass to open the scoring, while Stanford had to settle for a FG to make it 7-3 FSU after one. The two traded TDs for a short time, but Stanford couldn't make the Noles on the second one and settled for another FG, and hence an eight-point halftime deficit, 21-13. Noles extended the lead thanks to the only 3rd Quarter TD, and led 28-13 going into the 4th. Stanford scores shortly in to make it a one possession game, but FSU quickly kicked it back to an 11-point lead. Cards grinded their way down to just outside of FSU territory and booted a short FG to bring it back to one possession, 31-23, with three to play. In lieu of an onside kick, Trees elected to kick it deep and hope the D could pin the Noles back. The gamble worked as the Noles could only use about 30 second of the clock and Stanford's tying drive began at the Noles' 45. Down to the 16 with 32 ticks left, Kevin Hogan found Francis Owusu and now Stanford just needed the 2-point conversion to tie and potentially send the game to OT. Instead, the Noles once again buckled down and made a defensive play when it counted, recovered the ensuing onside kick, and escaped yet another game by the skin of their teeth that was later taken as part of a DNA examination by investigators. Jameis Winston, to whom society's rules have no meaning, was 18-30, 236, and after throwing the INT early tossed 3 TDs.

So the Semifinals are Oregon vs. USC and Alabama vs. Florida State. It also means that three of the four playoff contenders from real life are represented here, with USC replacing Ohio State. The Pac-12 is guaranteed a spot in the championship, while we get an ACC/SEC Challenge that's not on the hardwood or in Omaha.

ROUND OF 64 - BAYLOR REGION

2: Florida State (d. UConn) vs. 7: Maryland (d. Air Force)

Remember a couple of years ago, before Maryland bailed for the most glorious Big Ten and before Jameis decided to steal that girl and rape those crab legs, that FSU's start was a fluke and Winston wasn't that good and Maryland's D was going to shut FSU down? And that FSU went and beat the dogpiss out of Maryland in response?

What in God's name are you even talking about, no one thought Maryland was going to win that game

SEMIFINALS

1: Oregon (won Oregon region, d. Marshall) vs. 2: USC (won TCU Region, d. UCLA)

Duckies opening drive goes nowhere after Mariota gets hit a couple of times. USC gets onto Oregon's side of the field but a penalty-filled drive stalls out around the 40 and they're forced the punt midway through the first. From their own 20, Oregon races 80 yards in eight plays with Royce Freeman rushing in from two yards out for the first score of the game. USC immediately counters with a 61 yard pass down to the 2, where they'd punch it in two plays later to tie the game up at seven. Moving into the 2nd Quarter, Oregon goes back on top following a Thomas Tyner 10 yard run, leading 14-7 90 seconds in. Trojans go three and out and the Ducks are off and running again, this time Mariota finds Keanon Lowe from 19 and it's a 21-7 lead for the Duckies, 7:26 left in the half. Cody Kessler gets picked off on the ensuing drive, and from their own 15 Oregon speeds down the field with Mariota hooking up with Darren Carrington from 33 yards to put a fourth TD on the board with a minute left in the half, Oregon leading 28-7 at the break.

The second half starts no better for USC, as after a short drive stalls out Oregon returns the punt 83 yards for a score and at 35-7, this game is heading for blowout territory. Fortunately for the Trojans, they get a good KO return and an unnecessary roughness penalty to move into FG range, where they kick one from 48 yards to finally put some more points on the board, down 35-10 with 10:16 left in the half. Then the teams punt the ball back and forth for a bit, which ends poorly for USC, again, when Oregon runs a punt back from 86 yards for their second special teams TD of the game and it's 42-10. Before the quarter ends USC gets a 31 yard FG and go into the final fifteen down 42-13, which is answered by Oregon and it's 45-13. With 12:30 left in the game, USC is finally able to drive down and find their way into the end zone when Javorius Allen runs in from 11 yards out, but it's now 45-20 and 8:40 left in regulation. Electing to kick it deep, USC keeps Oregon out of the end zone but has to settle for allowing a FG, and with 4:39 left it's 48-20. USC goes 4 and out from their own 19 and this sucker is all but over. Oregon adds another TD, number two for Royce Freeman, and USC gets a garbage time score but that's not enough, Oregon advances to the title game after defeating USC, 54-27.

#1 Alabama (won Alabama Region, d. Mississippi State) vs. #2 Florida State (won Baylor Region, d. Stanford)

A matchup denied these past two years, these two finally meet. FSU opens with the ball and goes from their own 20 to the Bama 20, where Robert Aguayo ends up booting a 37 yard FG to put the Noles up early. Bama goes three and out, but FSU's second drive sees two false start penalties before Winston gets picked by the Tide at the Bama 47. Alabama can't capitalize, as they get just outside of the red zone and Adam Griffith misses from 41, as he finally gives into his base desires. An FSU drive dies out as we move from the 1st to the 2nd, still FSU leading 3-0, but Aguayo is good from 50 and it's 6-0 Noles. It's followed by another 3 and out for the Tide and there's legit worries about their offense. Noles get into the back end of Aguayo's range and ask him to hit from 50 again, but this time he can't hook it in and it remains 6-0. Bama of course can't capitalize and punts, but FSU punts it back with 4:41 remaining in the half. From their own 20, T.J. Yeldon rips off a 51 yard run to finally move Bama into scoring territory, but after three shots from inside the 10 go awry, Bama has to settle for a short FG to get on the board and it's 6-3 FSU. 1:50 left in the half, Noles can't advance out of their own end of the field and punt it away with under a minute left. Lane Kiffin finally gets to hit on a bomb to Amari Cooper, who hauls in a 54 yard pass to get down to the 15. With only a few seconds left, Bama settles for the short FG and it's 6-6 at the half.

Bama has the ball to begin the half and doesn't go anywhere, but the punt is returned by the Noles 77 yards to the house, the third punt return TD of these semifinals, and FSU leads 13-6. Bama finally seems like they've gotten their offense in gear, as they gash FSU with three consecutive double-digit yardage plays with the drive capped by an O.J. Howard 2 yard TD reception and we're tied at 13, 8:07 left in the quarter. From their own 29, Noles get down to the Bama 10 but have to settle for Aguayo kicking again and they lead 16-13, 3:20 left in the 3rd. FSU is finally able to return the INT favor as they pick Blake Sims at midfield, but can't take advantage and punt the ball away as we move into the 4th. On a key 3rd and 14 at midfield, T.J. Yeldon zips 35 yards to put the Tide in the red zone, where Amari Cooper finishes the drive with a 7 yard reception and take the lead for the first time, 20-16. This wakes up FSU, who go 76 yards in four plays with Karlos Williams finishing the last 38, and the Noles are quickly back up 23-20. Eight minutes to play, Bama gets stuck with a 4th down and 9 at the FSU 35 and leary of booting a long FG, Saban goes for it and doesn't come through, and now FSU is 5:10 away from advancing to the title game. Bama does force a four and out after an initial first down, and now the Tide have 2:56 to tie the game or take the lead. From their own 22, Bama faces two third downs and calls Cooper's name both times. First time is a 3rd and 3 conversion to extend a drive, the second time is a 3rd and 8 from the 18 where Cooper scores to put Bama up 27-23 with just :27 left to go. But FSU isn't dead and from their own 21, Winston finds Nick O'Leary for three big receptions down to the Bama 23. With six ticks left, Winston goes for it all and has his pass into the end zone batted down and Alabama knocks off the undefeated Seminoles.

In the end, the top two overall seeds outlast the other 126 teams to advance to the championship game. Oregon and Alabama will finally meet and truly determine who was the best team last season that didn't play in the greatest conference in the history of man the magnificent Big Ten

I can't even imagine watching that game. Last season was way too taxing on my emotions and that game would have just killed me. I gotta quit being so invested in 20 year olds playing with balls. Roll Tide.

CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

1: Oregon (d. Eastern Michigan, Navy, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Marshall, USC) vs. 2: Alabama (d. Georgia State, Washington State, Miami, Arkansas, Mississippi State, Florida State)

Finally. Good vs. Evil. Light vs. Darkness. Hope vs. Defeat. We've finally gotten what we want, but do we need to be careful what we wish for?

Ducks start with the ball, but Bama stuffs them and it's a three and out. The Tide takes over from their own 40 after the punt, and after going for two yards on his first rush, T.J. Yeldon rips off a 40 yarder to put the Tide in the red zone. Oregon tries to buckle down and forces a 3rd and 9 from the 17, Blake Sims hits Chris Black from 17 yards out and Bama scores first, leading 7-0 3:48 into the game. Oregon's second drive went better as it produced a first down and several more as they pounded their way from their own 14 to the Bama 11, but had to settle for a short FG on a drive that was 12 plays and 75 yards in 5:15 and it's 7-3 Tide, 5:51 left in the quarter. Bama crossed midfield on their second drive but stalled out there and punted for a touchback. With 2:50 left in the quarter, Oregon again struggled to get anything going and they punted as we moved into the 2nd.

Bama's third drive began at their own 15 and dinked and dunked their way down to the 11, where Sims hits Amari Cooper for his second TD pass of the day and it's now 14-3 Alabama, 8:18 left in the half. Oregon got a good return on the ensuing kickoff and started on their own 39 and quickly crossed midfield, but Bama allowed no more and Oregon elected to punt on 4th and 5 stuck in no-man's land. Said punt went for a touchback, and on Bama's next play Derrick Henry went for 76 yards down to the 4 yard line. Two plays later Christian Jones catches a 3 yard TD pass, Sims' third, and Bama now leads 21-3. 5:16 left in the half and the non-rednecks in the crowd and at home are starting to feel unsettled. From their own 27, Oregon gets a 30 yard gain and back into Bama territory, where they once again face 4th and 5 in no-man's land and again punt, hoping that their defense can stop the Tide for once. The gamble pays off as Bama went three and out and Oregon got the ball back on their own 46 with 1:36 left. Unfortunately, Duckies do nothing with the field positioning and punt it back to Bama, who fart around for the remaining time and take a 21-3 lead into the half.

Bama gets the ball to start the half and gets a good return to their 36, where Yeldon quickly put Bama onto the Duck side of the field. More ground and pound brings Bama to the 7, where Sims found DeAndrew White for his 4th TD pass of the night and now it's 28-3 Bama, 10:15 left in the 3rd and Oregon in bad, bad shape. Needing to put points on the board, Mariota finally engineered a TD drive, capped off with a Keanon Lowe 26 yard TD reception to make it 28-10, 6:25 in the 3rd, but Oregon showed signs of life. Fired up, the Ducks kept Bama from gaining a yard on their next drive and got the ball back at their own 36, continuing their good field position for the night. Alas, Oregon again couldn't take advantage of it and punted it back to Bama with 3:27 remaining. A trio of double-digit gains brought the Tide to the Duck 7 as the quarter expired.

Oregon doesn't allow Alabama to put the game away and holds the Tide to a FG, and it's 31-10 Bama with 13:53 left in the game. Oregon now needs points on every drive, but go backwards from the 26 to the 19 and had to punt, Bama taking over at the 50. After three plays got Bama to the 34, a swing pass to Amari Cooper led to Cooper breaking free and scoring, Sims' 5th TD pass of the night, and now it's 38-10 Bama with 10:50 to go, and Oregon is all but done down four TDs. Bama goes into a bend but don't break defense, which Oregon manages to somewhat exploit, as a drive ends with Mariota finding Dwayne Stanford for a 6 yard TD to make it 38-17, but the 75 yard drive required 15 plays and took 5:27, leaving 5:16 left on the clock. Instead of onsiding the ball Oregon kicked deep, and while Bama went three and out it left 3:43 for Oregon to score three TDs. From their 39, Mariota got the Ducks just outside of the red zone, but on 4th and 3 Mariota's pass falls incomplete and that's just about all she wrote. 1:40 left, Blake Sims drops the knees and Alabama wins, 38-17, just like I loving said would happen in the OP and I didn't even rig this poo poo.

Blake Sims won MVP, an effective 18 for 25, 221 yards and five TD passes. Two of those TD passes went to Amari Cooper, who had eight receptions for 113 yards. T.J. Yeldon ran 20 times for 113 yards. For Oregon, Marcus Mariota 23 for 35, 281 yards and 2 TDs, no picks and only took one sack. However, Royce Freeman ran 24 times for 48 yards, which is bad, and the leading receiver was Darren Carrington who had four receptions for 59 yards. Both teams ran 44 times, but Oregon only picked up 98 yards while Bama had 228.

So that's the tournament, in the end darkness reigns. Maybe the next time we do this the light can come through, or more of you will participate, or I won't gently caress up the entire setup right out of the gate. So long everyone!

Just out of curiosity, after the official result I ran the sim ten more times to see if Oregon could get a win.

Bama won them all.
