Aphra is one of my favorite comic characters in a good while. She doesn't even fail upwards, just kind of pinballs from catastrophe to catastrophe.

jivjov posted:Broadly, yes - if TC-14 is any indication. 3PO seems to be a bit more neurotic than most, but they all have that over-eager, slightly surprised thing going on. Even 0-0-0 has it! At the very least he's often over-eager.

Norns posted:Is marvel unlimited my best option for reading most of the modern SW comics right now? Pretty much. It stays far enough behind that they obviously want you to get the newest stuff, but they've got a lot. I've been re-reading the KOTOR comic.

100 degrees Calcium posted:Somewhat predictably, the latest Star Wars movie has renewed my interest in the franchise. If I wanted to read some good Star Wars comics, are there any particular recommendations for a newcomer? Darth Vader and Doctor Aphra are both great. The main title is fine but I feel like I'm kinda done with reading about Luke/Leia/Han/etc so your mileage may vary. If you liked the KOTOR game, you might also did the KOTOR comic which Marvel also has.

Yeah, you quickly find out which artists are really good at using photo reference without being, well, let's Land-ian about it and which aren't.

In my experience, John Cassaday was the best without looking like he was staring at a paused movie still on the other monitor. Also he's John Cassaday so he probably didn't even need to. Then you get Salvador Larocca who is not so good at it.

For the super curious, there's a whole Gizomod article about it: https://io9.gizmodo.com/theres-something-off-about-marvels-star-wars-comic-1822347742 It's absolutely got that light-boxed 'these characters are obviously not looking at each other' thing going on and it really brings the comic down. I'd much prefer somebody like Kev Walker over on Aphra at the same time.

Norns posted:I just read the first 5 issues of the 2017 Vader comic. Really fun so far, and there's no porn tracing! Yeah, Vader becomes Darth Vader Co-Starring Doctor Chelli Aphra pretty early on and it's worth the ride. Obligatory if you haven't read Aphra and like her in Vader, you should read her ongoing.

My only extremely minor complaint is I really like Boop with Trip and BT but at the same time that's kind of well-trodden ground at this point. Aphra's Defiant Ones riff with 000 was though.

Happy Noodle Boy posted:The Vader and Aphra stories were real good. Agreed. I was digging the main Star Wars story until the twist. Then it was just fine. Didn't really have anything for the bounty hunter. I know he's been a thing in the comics before, but I'd have preferred somebody else as my lead.

the guy from Semisonic posted:I've just started using Marvel Unlimited subscription to start reading Dr. Aphra and I'm loving it so far! How consistent is it over its run? Really strong. My only small complaint is I wish Kev Walker stayed on it for the whole run, but I'd never really call the art bad.

Agreed. It takes some doing to get me to care about prequel-related stuff, but Pak's putting in the work.

Cross-Section posted:I've been enjoying this current arc with her and Sana much more than I did the kinda-watered-down Indiana Jones adventure that came before, but yeah, there's a certain spark that's gone. Still worth the read, nonetheless. I think since Gillen left there was some zing off the dialogue fastball but it's honestly started to pick up recently. I don't think Boop needs a really big cast and I think the other characters were kind of watering things down. She only needs one or two people to bounce off of, not counting Wookiees and/or homicidal droids who communicate in beeps.

Fritzler posted:So is she Constantine in Star Wars? Definitely need to check her out too. The best way to describe Aphra is to think of her like Indiana Jones but she doesn't think the stuff she grabs belongs in a museum, it belongs to ever can pay the most for it. She's much more amoral than Constantine, but she'll have her moments every now and then (a little bit of a conscience as a treat).

I'm impressed they managed to keep it a secret, all things considered. I just knew there was a Twist at the end but thought it was going to be like Xizor or somebody.
