Would someone be able to gift me a Melon subscription on a month to month basis if I were to pay them at cost plus a slight premium? Can this be done within Melon or is it limited to buying giftcards?

I've dug myself deep enough into idol culture and general k music that I'd like a cheap and easy way to enjoy the product that doesn't necessitate illegally downloading countless albums.

I've given a cursory look, and it seems like you have to register as a member then buy points yourself, and that's just too much work Random Internet Stranger with Questionable Musical Taste. Kakao doesn't even offer gift cards.
Just download it illegally. Korea won't mind. It'll balance out some of the American shows I've been pirating.

You have to have a Korean phone number or an i-pin to purchase a subscription. The only known workaround is to pay with itunes credit on an iphone or ipad but I only use android phones.

Can someone give me some tips on Korean semi-formal work attire? I'll be working in Daegu come mid-August which is supposedly super humid, will short-sleeve work shirts/polos and slacks be fine? Am I thinking too much about this?

Bugblatter
Aug 4, 2003

It depends entirely on your job? I wear linen shirts with rolled sleeves for most of summer. Polos would also be acceptable at my school, but the linen is cooler.

Uniqlo, a big asian chain that you may or may not have in your country, also makes some undershirts called "Airism" shirts which will absorb sweat and keep you cool too. They're magical/might give you cancer? Who knows how they work, but I love them.

Yes. Some of your coworkers will be in three piece suits, some of them will be in tracksuits. Neither cares what the foreigner is wearing.

That really depends on where he's working. But if you're with Epik, yeah odds are it won't be very important.

Most offices these days just have men wearing Yshirts and slacks, with blazers optional.

So when the OP says that there is less demand for EFL now, is it still fairly easy to get a job doing that or is there a waiting list or what?

Still plenty of jobs, but there are way more applicants than jobs so the benefits and pay have been dropping while working conditions get worse, hours rise, and the cost of living goes up. If you're white then getting a job is not difficult but finding a job that isn't awful has become even harder than it used to be.

SSJ_naruto_2003

What is awful? I'm looking to get out of the country for a year or two before starting in my career, which is social work so I won't get paid poo poo even when I do start.

Would you suggest any other region rather than Korea because of the conditions? I can ask this in the EFL megathread, I guess.

EFL wages are higher than they were two years ago. Training centers used to advertise lots of 5k or 6k jobs, but 8k seems to be the floor now, which is still lovely. Who know what's going to happen, lovely economies create more demand as people train for new jobs, but over the long term they make wages stagnate a la Japan.

Don't.

just...don't. The whole appeal of Korea was that you could make a lot of money for easy work. Well, it's very far from easy and I am here to tell you that even if you DO get a public school job, they'll still do sketchy poo poo to you.

Go to Japan. Go to China. Go to Taiwan. poo poo, get a lousy job at a Berlitz in NYC and live in a horrible part of Queens and commute every day. ANYWHERE ELSE IS BETTER.

Calm the gently caress down. A simple, "Where did you see this? That sounds really weird" would have sufficed, you incomprehensibly hostile poopmonster.

Got this mixed up with the China thread.

To correct myself: gently caress EFL in Korea. Cost of living is too high, if it wasn't for the comped rent Japan would be cheaper with the same wages. China has higher savings potential and Taiwan's isn't far behind.

If nothing else, cost of living alone is the killer. The pay has been stagnant for over a decade and in a lot of cases has actually gone down, while cost of living has gone up... I don't even know how many times. It doubled just in the time I was there. If you are debt free you can manage but if you have student loans that are large enough to matter you're hosed.

Probably. The starting salaries here are around the typical max salary in Korea, and the cost of living is quite a bit lower. China also doesn't have the issue where you immediately hit the glass ceiling, you can climb up pretty high if you want to make a living out of it. Japan's coming back strong too I hear, and my friends in Vietnam also get paid more than Korea.

Korea's a nice place to live, working for Korean schools sucks. Mostly; there are good ones but those don't tend to have job openings very often for obvious reasons.

China has its problems but if you're looking for the classic have an adventure and save up some money for a year or two experience, I'd say it's your best bet right now. Taiwan is also supposed to be a nice place to live, though it doesn't have a great reputation for job quality either. The balance in China still favors the job seeker if you are careful about it. The market in Korea is saturated and shrinking, here it's growing rapidly.
