Isn't the main reason for SW (besides being a natural endpoint for Hickman's all-encompassing multi-year storylines) to clean up the Ultimate U? Besides not selling as well as it did when it first started, it must also be hella confusing for movie viewers wanting to jump into comics to realize that there's 2 main parallel marvel worlds.

Man, I still hate the Children of Tomorrow. Our nebulous powers of being advanced and bald allow us to do anything! Stand back mortals, and be in awe of our power loaders from Aliens! I think for something that represents the future, the Children are pretty bland, unimaginative, and down to earth. Really just kind of an extension of the pathetic ego of 1610 Reed.

Isn't that kind of the point? Granted I haven't read the Ultimates issues yet where they were introduced but it seems that U. Reed wouldn't want the future of humanity to actually eclipse him in imagination or intelligence but merely to be tehcnologically advanced pawns for him to use as needed.

It just hit me for all of U. Reed's big talk, his ultimate plan basically consisted of sending in SHIELD as cannon fodder so they could buy him enough time to launch his own version of the liferaft, who's plans he presumably copied 616 when he was using his machine to peer into our universe. Bravo Reed!

It was easy to miss in a small panel layout, but as the 616 raft launched from the Baxter Building another one launched simultaneously from the shaft that opened up in the City that the Children's fleet came from.

Yeah Hickman's problem isn't characterization, it's juggling that large cast throughout his avengers run so minor members inevitably got left in the sidelines.

I haven't this week's issue yet but read the preview and doesn't the dialogue explicitly state that Strange willfully chose not to be the God of their new world? I bring this up because of dialogue in the same conversation that alludes to both Doom and Strange doing what they had to/have to do to keep Battleworld safe/running, which I take as Strange acknowledging Doom as God because it's a title and the respect that comes with it that keeps Battleworld running.

It's exactly this. Doom clearly views Strange as his partner in this endeavor, if not exactly his equal. Their whole disagreement is because Doom clearly thinks that Strange is lowering himself in status by keeping his role of Sheriff which is far beneath his abilities. Strange respects Doom's rule as necessary to the survival of Battleworld and so addresses Doom with the title of God, which is part of the rules that keeps Battleworld functioning.

E for Extinction was so good, agreed that it was basically a love letter to that X-Men era. Not too crazy about the art still since it seems like it was drawn by the bastard child of Quitely and Kordey. I thought Cyclops had gotten fat in his old age but no he was just drawn weirdly lumpy.

hope and vaseline
Feb 13, 2001

Yeah, I know about the restrictions he was under as fill-in artist, I'm just commenting that it wasn't the good Kordey this artist is emulating. Anyway it's a small enough quibble that it didn't detract that much for how enjoyable the issue was.

It seemed pretty clear to me that Cyke and Emma were supposed to be looking kind of old and worn and haggard. Which would be in keeping with the theme of the new generation of mutants outgrowing the old.

Yeah, I figured the artist was going that route, but then Cyke reverted to his muscular self when in bed with Emma so I dunno.

There's some interesting stuff going on in this issue. With our foreknowledge of Morrison's run, we know a couple of things already. Namely that Jean as Phoenix is end-game, specifically for Sublime to achieve whatever final form he has. With Xavier/Nova's early termination, does this mean that Magneto never took Kick to get infected with Sublime? Mags is showing an unhealthy amount of interest in birthing that Phoenix egg. And what the hell happened with Xorn/Magneto if they're going the route of Xorn being a separate person, or maybe there's someone else under that mask this time around.

I really like the way the writer is playing with our preconceptions of the original run for his story.

hope and vaseline
Feb 13, 2001

Yeah, the nano-sentinels were giving them a form of superflu that Xorn/Magneto deactivated with his powers. It's not inconceivable to think that in this history he merely modified them to gradually weaken the original X-Men. He did use the nano-sentinels to heal Xavier's spine and take it away during the reveal.

Am I crazy for seeing the Beyonders as comicbook writers? The bit about them at first being obsessed with creation then destruction of what was created made it fairly obvious for me.

Or did Final Crisis just prime me for meta-naratives that aren't there?

Naw, it definitely has a meta thread running through it, and it's a pretty damning criticism of the nature of comic universe reboots, along with the idea that the archetypes of comic heroes and villains will always find their way through the mess.

Honestly a little disappointed with how E for Extinction wrapped up. It was still all-out craziness with the continued inversion of Morrison's plot points, but it kinda felt like the writer was trying to hit too many of them without really giving much impact to any of the big scenes. Still happy this series even existed at all though.

Hickman brah you loving nailed it, thanks for a really entertaining ride for the past 7 years or so.

The only thing I'm left wondering is if we're left with an alternate history of the Marvel U from pre-incursion events to now, and how the multiversal elements that currently exist (Hyperion, Dr. Spectrum, Starbrand, etc) came to be if the incursion events never happened.

I think the sole reason for the delays was just due to that one page with Reed's and Doom's faces blended together in alternating little squares. Can't imagine how long it'd take to draw something like that. Esad Ribic is so talented.

I was looking at that page a good couple of minutes in awe
